Should Hilf be at WC for Pidge

I cant help but think that Hilf would have made our attack much stronger. Its more hard to score runs of Hilf than it is pigeon now days. Hilf oviously swings the ball aswell & that is so valuable when the pitch is a road. Mcgrath has been going for a few when its a road.

In my opinion the selectors went with pigeon because of loyalty, i just hope it doesnt cost us the cup.

Agree Ross, selectors were hamstrung when McGrath opted for his swansong at the WC. Hilfenhaus while lacking experience looks ready to go and impressed in his brief international exposure.

Pigeon has quite a few wickets this WC but his stats are misleading IMO with many soft dismissals, especially against some weaker teams. But the poms put him to the sword, as did muppet and AB in the Saffas game.

In contrast Tait has been outstanding, particularly with the older ball, Bracken's been very reliable (brief lapses against SA) while Hogg can't be faulted and adds another dimension to the attack. McGrath's fielding remains problematic. With him in the team if Watson's unavailable it makes the decision to play only four frontline bowlers a risky proposition against a potentially powerful batting lineup.

i think australian cricket owe it to him to be there, hes taken 500 test wickets and 300 odd ODI wickets, he is a champion.

What nonsense. Pidge have been excellent this world cup. Seems he can't win, he was the best bowler in the CWB series yet even then people were saying he should be dropped

Does tend to get hit around by top orders now, but in the middle overs and at the death he is one of the best going around.

Agreed. When you watch him against the better teams he just doesnt look like getting a wicket.

It is worrying with Bracks & Pidge 2 of our 3 pace bowlers. I only see Tait as a genuine wicket taking threat when the batsmen are not trying to slog. This Watto injury really hurts, Watto is a gun with the ball averaging 19 with it in 2006, thats better than most strike bowlers around the world.

I don't know which muppet you're referring to but I think it's dangerous to go on stats alone. AB and the real muppet smashed McGrath. Bell and KP looked like destroying him so Punter had to remove him as things were getting out of hand. Yet in the 20/20 against the Bangers 3 of their ambitious youngsters handed him fairly soft wickets, as did a couple of the Windians unnecessarily so at the time. Also picked up a few bonus wickets in the last over of the poms innings against **** batsmen desperate to get some quick runs as they had slowed up dramatically. I wouldn't back him against good batsmen who were attacking him with very little assistance in the pitch. I think he's lucky he has the support of Bracken and Tait aided by the variety of Hogg. If he was in a mediocre team he'd be hit around more IMO.

Incidentally Langeveldt is well up in the wickets too but has leaked runs as well.

Always remember to read beyond the stats.

McGrath has been fine through this WC, Hilfy is still a newbie. If Pigeon was going to be replaced, it would be by Clark.

A wicket is a wicket no matter how soft the dismissal is. If McGrath continues to get hs 3-50/60 then I'm happy. Least he is getting wickets. That is the most important stat.

He never gets the new ball, and he doesn't get reverse swing, so he basically never gets to get any sideways movement. First change is possibly the worst time to bowl in these conditions, because what little sideways there is has always dissapeared but the field is still up and the ball coming on perfectly. Tait hasn't got any swing with the new ball so far, so I'd give the new nut to McGrath and bring Tait on after a couple of overs.

I love Hilfy but could have seen him copping a lot of stick at this WC. He relies a lot on conventional swing which you don't get in the Carribean

You oviously havent seen Hilf bowl very much. He usually starts bowling wicket off cutters if he isnt getting swing.

3 wickets against Scottland. 2 against Netherlands. 3 against Windies. 3 against Bangladesh in a 20/20 game. So he has done good against the minnow teams.

BUT.....Got hammerd againt Saffers & got hammerd againt Poms but picked up 2 final over wickets cos they had to slog. He has been less than impressive against these 2 more classy teams.

& rememeber he copped some fearfull hammerings in NZ recently, i know most of our bowlers did but Pidge allso copped some massive poundings in the CB series. I recall him going for 80+ a few times. He should stand down & tell the selectors Hilf should replace him.
