I'm athletic but haven't played much football in a team environment. 187cm, 87kg, 7% body fat. Where would I slot into Freo? I'm thinking midfield since that is where we need a lift.

I wouldn't give up when the going gets tough and would try and make each contest very physical, because that's what I like doing, roughing people up. I think the only way we can win the flag is if we get people like me playing for them, only downside is I would need to learn how to kick the ball better on the run. I'm only good (not great) at the moment kicking set shots. And all the other footy skills you need, but I'm sure I could obtain them quick.

Think I should try out?

Im mid twenties, so I'd be doing a Troy Wilson if I did. Though since I've never had any injuries and never really put my body under that much stress, and I'm a late developer, I think I could play until 35 at least.

Can you just try out or do you need to be playing already like at WAFL or lower levels? Like is there some place you can turn out for a trial or something? I heard something about it a few years ago but nothing recently. Or should I just ring the club up and ask them to see me?

Dont mean to be rude but if your not playing footy atleast at the WAFL Reserves level than your no hope mate. StKilda are the only club that look at country footy.

Your body fat is a bit low. Try eating something.

Either that or stop raiding Benny's stash.

It seems fine for me (BF that is), it's only a little work to stay at it, like not eating anything outside a certain range. I've been weight lifting and aerobic training for 7 years now. When I eat 6 meals a day and exercise regularly it's hard to raise my BF because I need around 4800 calories a day to stay even. Eating that much healthy food is hard, let alone even more.

Well that is what interests me.... can someone like me who hasn't played much in a team of footballers make it on fitness/strength/speed/etc instead? To me, and maybe I'm wrong, it almost seems like you are either going to be good at kicking the ball on the run or not. There are a lot of AFL footballers that never improve their field kicking, so at whatever stage it was they got to that level is what is important to me. How long would it take to reach my peak of field kicking?

BF levels are fine. I have a similar level and it isnt a problem IMO. And i'm a personal trainer so have studied the areas closely.

Don't know...... i'm a fitness trainer not a skills coach unfortunately.

Just go down to training and sit behind the goals. When the ball goes over the fence kick it back to Connolly and if he thinks you are a good kick you will be invited to train with the squad. That's how Luke Webster got started.

Actually... do you know what sort of weights the average AFL player lifts for someone around my body size? Bench/Curl/Deadlift/Squat and press would be helpful. I think I saw Solomon pressing about 80KG in a video the other night ,but finding out what I should be aiming for seems a bit difficult.

Is that true? I'd never heard that before. Great story if it is.

I guess we know that's not how Cookie got started.

The same Luke Webster that captained the WA Under 18's?? I think that may have helped him get picked up.

Haha, you are a tool. You may as well try out for the olympics while you're at it. Perhaps the Australian cricket team too? The more you try out for, the higher your chance of getting a gig.

Ease up. He might actually be able to play.

Although it is laughable to actually rock up and hope for a kick at training and getting a game, those days are long gone at the top level.

I hope you're taking the p!$$ Memories. As in - these blokes are mentally soft; Joe Bloggs from on the streets could do a better job than them...

Otherwise you're either pretty arrogant or a fair bit naive.

hahaha. The sad part is if you were 17 and could run a 15+ beep test you'd probably get rookied.

Fortunately for you, recruiters look at physical attributes before skills these days.

As for the field kicking unfortunately, practise will only take you so far above your natural ability.
