Should the Dees and the Pies do a hard reset like the Tigers?

I absolutely expect Collingwood to be one of the teams trading 2 years of 1st rounders to keep loading up.

The aim will be to stay top 4-6 while Tassie raid the draft and then if the fall comes in 2028/29 so be it.

The like of LDU, Brayshaw, TDK, Rowell, Ben King... Even younger guys like Phillipou or Callaghan.

Our 5 best players, Moore, Daicous 1, Daicous 2, JDG and Houston, are all on the right side of 30. Also a solid next core, comprising Cameron, Hill, McReery, IQ, Shultz, Maynard, McStay, Perryman, Lininski, are also all well under 30. That is 14 players currently in their peak and likely to be for a few more years. The hard rebuild talk is way off the mark.
Richmond supporters were talking up having five top 30 picks in the 2021 draft, so they could build around the future core of Bolton, Rioli, Graham and Baker.

I think the quality of the Collingwood core goes much deeper with Collingwood. In fact Bolton equivalent to Hill, Rioli a good upgrade on Noble but hardly elite, and Graham and Baker good players - not stars. At Collingwood there are currently a number of additional players whose quality matches, exceeds, or is close to those 4 without making the Elite 5. For example Cameron, Quaynor, Hill, Crisp, Maynard, plus others.

That doesn't equate to what he's saying though.

Baker, Rioli, Bolton, & Graham were 23, 24, 23, & 23 respectively at the conclusion of the 2021 draft when Richmond decided to change direction.

It obviously didn't work out, but you could see what the plan was with that core at that relatively young age + the draftees they took. They're at an age that actually represents a future proof core of players.

The 'core names' you've mentioned are turning 30, 25, 25, 32, & 29. It's not really the same thing.

If you're going to afford Collingwood those extra players at older ages to boost the numbers, then it's only fair that you add Broad, Short, Prestia, Grimes, Vlastuin, Nankervis, Balta, Martin, Lynch, & Lambert to the Richmond list, and things suddenly look a hell of a lot more even.

Remember, this is in 2021/22 as well, when many of these diminished/retired players were still considered quality contributors.

Those ages look a fair bit out, Daicous is 22 and Houston is 27, and none of the Collingwood players mentioned are older than 29. The Richmond core 4 mentioned is not comparable to the Collingwood 5 mentioned - that was more the point. The 5 are of sufficient quality to build a team around. Also, Collingwood have a number of players a couple of years older who are about the same quality. Anyway, it is a fair point to say things can fall apart very quickly, Richmond had some good young players and some good quality older players. I just think that Collingwood’s recruiting strategy has given them the opportunity to contend for at least a few more years.

Given that Tassie will soon come in and compromise a couple of drafts, and with overall just the amount of sides in the competition it's got me thinking that clubs may be more inclined to trade away value as per what Richmond did this year and start looking at how a 2 year rebuild could be achieved. The model is really just trading out players still with value and aiming for as many top 30 picks in a single draft then you are just naturally not very good for a couple of years until ideally that bulk of players come good.

If we look at recent premiership dynasty sides like Melbourne (2021) and Collingwood (2023) who aren't likely to win anymore flags after such an unprecedented run of success, should they just face the music and go all in so that they aren't trying to rebuild with the minimum draft capital each year?
Demons one was interesting. It's not like that demon's 2021 side won a flag with no finals experience and wasn't contending for finals in the last 10 seasons.

2017 they finished 9th by percentage.

2018 they won 2 finals and made a prelim final.

2019 they finished 17th crippled with injuries.

2020 they narrowly missed out on finals.

2021 they got the flag. But all the cards fell their way.

Melbourne definitely not. They have already been quietly replenishing through the draft quite nicely over the past few years. Surely, they have spent enough time at the foot of the ladder already this century, to somewhat willing do it all again.

Collingwood, remains to be seen. One great thing in their favour is their ability to attract a lot of good players through FA. Can't imagine them going down the hard reset road unless their was absolutely no other way. Can't see how many would stand for it.
