News Side vs Freo

Resting Jolly at FF is what I agree fully with... he looks very dangerous one on one and is second to Cloke in that dept. and is a very good kick for a big man.

Jolly seemed to play in a 20m radius from goal when he was forward, very menacing.

Three talls hey, interesting.

Anyway found an awesome place in Bali to watch last weeks game, but what i noticed most about the place was how many freo supporters were in there watching the Lions game.

Should be good tomorrow night, a full house for sure.

Hopefully we can shut them up.

I reckon Jack will really fire tomorrow.

I hope so, he should kick 3-4 with Silvagni playing on him, should be to strong and quick for him.

I'm guessing Tarrant will take Cloke and McPharlin to take Dawes.
Which leaves Jack to be matched up by Silvagni which I think he should win, although Silvagni is very good I think Jack is alot better. Hopefully he can pull down a few contested marks.

Would love to see Barham playing. With no Medhurst I would love to see Macaffer thrown forward where he can both impose his great tackling pressure he has shown over the past few weeks as well as go back to kicking bags of goals as he was doing in the VFL when first rookie listed by the club as a forward. Then Barham can play a combination of the O'Bree and Macaffer roles.

I also like how the club is also trialing my idea which I included in my recent Jaxson Barham thread where we play only Jolly as our sole ruck and give him 85% game time and let Dawes backup when necessary which still leaves JA + Cloke up forward which is still quite strong.

Interesting idea. Barham is a terrier when tackling. He just drives in. Like the idea.

First I've heard of the Dawes backup ruck, leaving Wood out. Gives us extra run. Main thing is we'd get a big advantage in the ruck when Sandi has a rest, with Wood in the team. Freo doesn't seem to have a recognised 2nd ruck. Michael Johnson I suppose.

I'm hoping for Barham in for O'Bree.

I must say that even though it would've been tempting for us to bring in Presti, I'm really happy we're putting faith in the 2 young boys this week. They need to learn how to play on the big names and it will only benefit the football club in the years to come.

Wouldn't it be great to see either Reid or Brown do a really serviceable job on Pav.

I've read a lot of the responses after the side was areleased and must say there is a bit of panic in many.

Whether you agree with the individual selections you have to have faith in this side.
They have all, those in, those coming and those overlooked contributed to 6 from 7 in various configurations.

It's a long run to the flag and player management does not start in round 20 it starts in round 1.

Some older players need resting and some younger player need to be protected from running out of legs late in the year.

To me it all seems to look very well managed at the moment, with very few surprise omissions or inclusions.

I'd actually think with Anthony, Cloke and Dawes the match ups might look like this:

Tarrant > Anthony (Anthony being fast on the lead Tarrant can match him, unlike McPharlin or Silvagni)
McPharlin > Cloke (Not sure if he has the fitness to go with Cloke, but could always rotate on to Anthony)
Silvagni > Dawes (Silvagni dominated Hawkins and I think would match up well on Dawes)

hmm...as much as ive wanted to see this 3 forward structure tried im not convinced that this was the week.
that freo team thats been listed is quick...very quick.
weve replaced a creative forward with a lead up forward and whilst his form has merited selection, as a replacement for medders...
i dont know, i can see a 3 tall forwardline playing into their hands with silvagni, mcpharlin and tarrent not exactly being the most athletic blokes in the world.

im glad weve kept the defence the same but this is 2 weeks without wellingham and were losing a bit more skill and class in medders...

i wouldve just pushed steele into that forward role he played last week, didnt do too bad at all and brought in an extra mid i.e. wellingham/barham...i just think the side looks a bit slow and we might be exposed..

just to clarify my slow comment, Jolly, Wood, Dawes, Cloke, Anthony, Brown, Reid are our talls. Cheesy isnt exactly a sprinter either.

Im confident, but theres that seed of doubt that wasnt there before

I don't think you can knock the selections given the injuries to Medhurst and Wellingham.

With Wellingham out O'Bree obviously keeps his spot as a clearance player.

Anthony was the obvious inclusion for Medhurst. I don't think our forward pressure will suffer all that much for it. I think people over-rate Medhursts defensive pressure and under-rate Anthonys. I think this part of their game is comparable. I know tackling stats are not a thorough indicator but Medhurst averages 3.7 this year and 1.6 last year; Anthony averages 4 and 2.1.

I also agree with Didaka - it's great to see the selection comittee keep the faith with Reid and Brown in a big game.

Relax guys. Its only Round 8. We don't need to be playing our best and brightest every single week. I know every week is a must win, but not at the expense of September. Why run our most promising youngster into the ground by bringing him back for a trip to Perth then making him play 6 days later against, arguably, the best side in the comp? We're not gonna go through the season 21-1, so relax, we will be resting players continuesly to maintain them for September. Presti is a prime example, Wellingham was the next one.

i agree with you you both pielebo and Quicky
just in terms of this week i think that we might struggle with the team selected.
im extrememly happy that all of reid dawes anthony and brown are in the side and the positives far outweigh the negatives of the side.
personally i hope anthony and dawes kick a bag each and we win in the same fashion that we have been lately

However, comparing this side to the one thats run out in the last 3-4 weeks and then looking at our opponent i dont think weve picked the right horses for this course overall.

I obviously hope that im proved wrong and i still think we'll win :thumbsu:

I'm excited about the changes. Win or lose it's round 8 and we've made changes according to injury and form - 2 things which need to be done each week. We're playing an exciting new structure with three big forwards in the line up, and we are trusting the 'kids' down back. Going to be a fantastic game, and it's a really great insight into the future of this team.

Go pies :D

That's the most stupid comment I've seen in a while i'd rather Fraser than wood any day. Fraser was playing great before he got injured.

Surely ur kidding there?? 'Great'?? OK he played well against the Dons but that was it surely

Worried about Presti I must say.

I don't think Reid or Brown have the chops to shut down Pavlich, despite what Brown did in his debut year.

It'll have to be a total team effort - operation Containment if not Shit-down.

Get your head out of the sand - You must have a connection to him to say that!! come on -- did you notice last week that Jolly was able to spend more time in the forward line with Wood covering the centre something that Fraser isnt able to do!!!!!!

it was no coincidencs that fraser's best game was when it was over at quarter time against essendon. i really hope cam wood puts his hand up and finds the form he had late last year and secures second ruck spot. the side looks far more dangerous when jolly is resting in the forward line with wood up against opposition's second ruck. on tonites game devasted that wellingham not playing and bit concerned about our pace in the midfield, wouldnt be suprised to see barham come in as a tagger and he is a tackling machine with genuine leg speed. just hope when he gets it kick lomg to the top of the goal square , use the kiss method. keep it simple stupid;)

Don't worry too much guys, about the ins and outs.

Sad wellers isn't in but i believe what is going on is that now we have depth in our side,so Malty wont risk players unneccesarily.
Medhurst and wellers couldve played, but better to keep them on ice till we meet the cats next week, this gives players like barham and Anthony a chance in the seniors.

As i stated in a previous thread yesterday i knew Presti wouldn't play, beacuse malthouse is interested in seeing how reid and brown go against the bigger power forwards,by giving these guys a chance shows them that malthouse believes in them. Why not they are our future and the more game time the young guys get the better.

We need to be careful with presti the old war horse,he is being managed through the season so he will be in the side for the pointy end of the season....that is when we will really need him, plus reid and brown will gain valuable experience by playing regularly in the seniors.

Good thinking i reckon....We will smash freo tonite....pies by 30 points.

We are possibly the only team that travels very well.

Is anybody else worried that we should be playing at least 1 more small than tall at subi than we have listed?? Our bench atm is Brown, Dawes, Wood and Macaffer...... With Dawes i'm guessing lining up at FF and Anthony in the pocket it'll give us 1 more but i think we're going too tall...

Just my opinion..

ESPECIALLY IF IT IS WET.
