Sidebottom - TAC Cup Grand Final

If I kicked 10 in the GF, I'd have an abnormally large head too :)

I think (and Vic Crow is obviously better placed to comment), that we were a chance of grabbing him at pick 10 if the cards fell our way, but now, I'd say we have absolutely no chance.

The only hope is he throws the early stages into a bit of confusion and by some miracle, Hartlett drops to us.

Doubt it though.
All year I've rated him at #6. Leading up to the Grand Final I had him at #5. Now I have him at #4.

I could feasibly rate him at #3 before the draft. Maybe #2.

So if it were up to me, I guess that answers your question. Also note the subtle change in my user title. I'll be back to the drawing board and come up with a new #10 for my avatar.

#1 even? :D ;)

I'm toying with it and could definitely make a case for it. I don't think I'd go quite that far though.

Tell me, VC. Who of the really big name talents do you feel is most likely to slip to the Crows? Not that we'll necessarily pick them but I can't help but feel that with so many highly rated talents in the draft this year that one of them surely has to slip to us.

While I'm at it, is there any way in which you can form an argument for Sidebottom slipping to the Crows? Like, the clubs before us having a desperate need for KPP or something? :o Anything to give me hope!

I guess it's hard to say. I mean, sliders are sliders because they're meant to go higher. For some odd reason I could see Hurley sliding a bit because he probably won't test too well for speed or endurance. I wouldn't bank on it, but he's the only big name I could make a case for.

Some have Hartlett slipping a bit. Personally I rate him very, very highly though. I've had Hartlett at #3 since July and only now is Sidebottom challenging him. But clubs might not like him as much as I do. Some clubs might always have him 'next' on their list. From reading Emma Quayle's book it seems that nearly every club rated Alex Rance very highly last year, but he was remarkably always the 'next' on a list and he slid to 18 despite being rated.

A case for Rusty slipping to us? Acquire a Top 5 pick and hope he gets there.

I cannot make a case for him slipping to Pick 10. Before the finals series I could see him getting there. After a week I was worried. After two weeks I was pessimistic. After the Grand Final it's all over. He already had a good reputation, but brilliant reputations are made in two places - the Nationals and finals. He just earned himself a brilliant reputation, not just from that game, but his whole month. It's been nothing short of stellar.

FWIW, I was already a bit of a fan, but I fell in love with him at the Nationals, so he wasn't too shabby there either.

My opinion means sweet F*&% all but I can still see Sidebottom sliding to us.

I really think recruiters are set in 'their guys' and 10 goals in a GF may not sway them like it has the BF crowd.

All beit he had an amazing year topped off by a better finals series but if it comes down to who picks who, a recruiter will take their guys (may not be the best available like everyone here on BF loves to do, but may bee a need pick)

I personally can't see the Tigers going past Vickery if he's still there.

I hope a few curve balls get thrown, eg Yarran to Carlton, Blease really early (because his pace will attract recruiters) etc.

I wouldn't mind Blease if he was available at 10. He's a tad underrated on Bigfooty. He runs and carry's, is bottom aged, very quick and has brilliant ball use. However he is very very very skinny. Looks very small but is 183cm so thats ok. He's very damaging when he has the ball, he's very attacking minded. Only problem is he doesn't get it enough. However that doesn't really matter, let him develop in the SANFL for a year or two and he'll be right. VB didn't get much of it as a junior but look at him now. He's probably the type of midfielder we need- someone to give us some spark in there. He's a Brent Harvey type of player. He might struggle with the physicality of AFL though, again, he is sooo skinny. He makes Richard Douglas look buff.

Well with Steele being there at 10 for you but you went with Davis.

Where you guy happy with that?

I'm ecstatic with Phil Davis. Although I have not seen him play, I have great confidence in Matt Rendell making this decision. Rendell said Phil Davis was a "no-brainer" and actually rated him number 2 out of the entire draft. Given very few clubs saw very few games of his due to injury, he really could be anything.

Depends what you mean by happy. Realistically we knew we weren't ever going to take Sidebottom, somehow he just doesn't scream "Neil Craig". I would have loved to have him, but I'm also happy to have gone tall like we did, and Davis is rated ridiculously highly by the club.

I guess if you'd given me the option of Sidebottom + someone I rated in the second round vs Davis AND McKernan, I would have taken the second option even beforehand. Sidebottom is going to be a gun though I'll wager, you guys got yourself a winner :thumbsu:

I am a Fan of Steel Sidebottom, however the club have a huge opinion of Phil Davis

The AFC has viewed Phil's 2008 injury year as a blessing as it enabled them to keep Phil under the radar from other clubs....

I have confidence in the clubs decision :thumbsu:

Have Read that Rendall had massive Opinion on him and I guess they think the Injury made sure he fell to 10, Where they thought he could of been a top 5 pick and even rated higher then Hurley if he played last season and in the u-18 Champs as well.

Simmlar happend with us with Dawes, Those his Injury came at end of the season. Dawes was rated as possible late 1st Early 2nd Round Pick. Hine had him a 1st Round Pick but With his injury allowed him to fall to pick 29

have you asked the other 9 clubs the same?
No but sounded like in this Thread a lot of People here wanted Steele to be a Crow and I was just wondering if they still where annoyed when Crows did not draft him

I think a lot of us learnt last year with the Dangerfield/Ebert saga, not to expect anything and not to act like we know who the club will or should pick, we also trust Rendell a lot more than we did last year. I guess also with Davis, whilst being very much unknown, he was one of the 4 or 5 names who kept being thrown around as a possible draftee, so it wasn't a surprise in any way, he was also a local boy which always goes down well.

Yeah, if I had the choice between a gun mid or gun KKP. I would take the KKP any day. Particularly one that Rendell believes can also play through the midfield.

I'll probably be made to eat my words here when he becomes a gun midfielder in a few years time, but I'd rather he not play midfield personally. Hell, it's not like I'd mind it, but I hope they don't try to "dual-develop" him. Just tell him he's a KPP forward and that's the only avenue he has to the team. Make him focus 100% on that. If he later moves into the midfield, all power to him.

IMO the key reason is simple, the crows targeted talls, in particular talls that can play forward
