Skipworth training with Essendon

He plays for their VFL affiliate, and it's probably a form of a reward after missing most of/all of 2007 with a knee. Apparently he's a mentor to some of their kids.

I just liked something about him. Would be good to see him given a second chance!

I agree. I really think he could make it if given a chance in the right team structure.

I remember him kicking 3 goals in 3 minutes one game. And then of course BOG in the SANFL GF.

He may be a long shot with clubs going younger and these days but after what Stewie Dew has done I think clubs would have sat up and taken notice that there is still room for the mature recruit.

I guess the thing with Dew is that he A) had a real weapon (his kicking) and B) the experience of a premiership. Skippy unfortunately was always a solid player in a midget body. He had the ability to do exciting things but couldn't put it all together often enough to make up for his unimposing stature.

I did love him though. My best mate lived down the road from him for his youth. I remember going to Kadina (where Skippy is from) and watching a NAB Regional challenge match or whatever they were called back then and everyone there was so excited to see him playing. "KICK A GOAL, SKIPPYYY!!", hahahaha.

My girlfriend of the time even bought me a little #14 guernsey :p Nowadays I pretend it's a Mackay guernsey.

I swear I read in the paper yesterday that he's coming back to play for Woodville West Torrens next year....

You did. That was subject to him not being picked up in this year's draft.

If he's not picked up - the most likely outcome - he'll be at WWT next year.

skippy wasnt up to the pace of the game 2 yrs ago. the games got faster since making him even less relevant.

NO chance to be picked up imo

Cool thread.

But anyway.. it was always going to happen, and infact I believe that's the main reason he left Woodville and went to the rubbish VFL.

His manager thought it would be just ace if he went to Bendigo so he could have a better chance of catching the eye of a crappy Victorian cellar dweller as they would be the only teams interested in him.

The fact that he injured himself recently (can't remember whether that was this year or last, don't really care) wouldn't help his chances at all, not to mention he is too small considering he doesn't have the pace to make up for his lack of stature, and he struggles to kick over a jam jar.

He won't get picked up, Essendon would be mad to do that considering they are rebuilding allegedly, so we will see him in the SANFL next year. Quality at state level, not good enough in the big league.

Dew is a far, far better player than Skippy. You would never see Skippy do what Dewy did in the Grand Final. Not in a million years.

This shouldn't come as a great surprise to anyone. We've had a few Essendon supporters over here this year, asking us about Skipworth.

I was quite happy when the club gave him the chop, because I don't think he has what it takes to be an AFL footballer. However, I wish him all the best and hope that somebody (probably Essendon) is prepared to give him a second chance.

I was on a flight with him a couple of weeks ago and he doesn't look as small as he used to. Obviously he is still as short, but he looked pretty solid to me. I'm thinking he's put on a bit of bulk since he left west lakes...

If '06 wasn't seen as such a strong draft, he probably would have been redrafted. I saw him as a solid backbone vanilla player, unfortunately we had way too many of this type and he wasn't getting games because of it. I think he could have offered another club something and perhaps still could, for his sake I hope he does get picked up, always did like him, but I did agree with the decision to delist him.

I'd put better odds on him winning the Magarey than winning a spot on an AFL list. Great little player, playing in the wrong era.
