I think it's unearthed a bit more depth as the season went on, which is the case most years. But given the top-end talent is a tad below last year's, the flow-on effect means that there will appear to be better depth anyway. However I think quite a few players have developed further than we might have imagined at the start of the season, so has made the mid-draft prospects something to look forward to even if they aren't that top-end elite talent.

This years group has more unknown quantities than previous years. Up to a dozen players could be taken across the two drafts who have hardly played or returning from long term injuries. It makes for an exciting draft that's for sure.

Well at least this year we know which loop holes they'll be using rather than being surprised by Sydney like last year...

Bit of a weird scenario. I would think the logical thing would be once a bid has come in, you have what you have and that's it. But they are trying to encourage live trading, so that would be why.

Yes it seems very open to encourage action..anything for draft night interest..but when side start walking away with 2 gun players I suspect the moans will come and they will be loud.

You really believe clubs will complain if they’re carrying this rule over to next year?

I bet Eddie will be conspicuously quiet.

I believe when a side gains an advantge at the percieved cost of other clubs they will whinge... and so when Geelong was able to pick Selwood with Hawkins in the pocket as a R3 pick ... the groans started and the system changed...and when Syd was able to draft Heeney so cheaply ..again the system changed...

so yes .. clubs that are aligned to players like Green , are allowed to trade their pick when a bid happens and use later picks to match bid then trade back in... I suspect there will be grumbles..

Generous to assume he'd have any idea about future NGA prospects tbh

How many clubs have good NGA talent over the next couple of years?

Every club potentially can use this “loophole”.

For the record I think it sucks.

How many clubs..?I have no idea... I suspect the complaints will not be about the number of players but the quality..just like with FSons etc.. no one cares when you get 10 players that would be rookies... get three top 10 players ina row..and there will be a gripe.
Next year will be interesting with so many academy players

Pie4Life not sure if it is coincidence or you have factored in already past injury possibly affecting future performance...is that part of the case for your ranking of Kemp knee ac, Robertson shoulders, Henry patella and Stephens ac where they are?

Pie 4 Life ...

wondering what your reaction is to the artilce by CalT..on AFL.com.au

Clubs will be able to swap picks while on the clock and then match bids with later picks...

Seems to me to be ripe for rorting... it almost guarenttes that clubs like GWS and Freo will have trades arranged predraft for if and when and bid happens
But it also works the other way as well
Clubs could bid on a player they know the other club cannot pass up now due to the ability to trade down/across and would bid earlier than before
e.g Blues bid on Henry with #9 knowing that freo will trade 10 out and match with later picks only to come in at a later stage using up later picks quicker and moving their late picks up the ladder.

I have a feeling Richmond's later picks in #38 , #39 , #41 , #56 are going to be in demand once the bids come in for certain players and we may just move our pick #19 to a decent level

Injury is always a factor to consider when it comes to ranking and recovery and I’m sure there’s x amount of examples on both sides when it comes to how it impacts them at AFL level in the future. The ACLs like Kemp or if a player has repeated hamstring troubles (Trent Burgoyne) or ankle issues (Mitch O’Neill) are the ones where you have to be really wary, particularly the latter too if it’s soft tissue or some kind of degenerative repetitive issue. Usually once they make it to an AFL club players can either thrive or the problems continue and it’s worked out if it’s a serious issue or if it’s just been their recovery process as a junior. I think in most cases I haven’t really rated players lower than where they should be due to injury though Stephens would be top 20 more than likely if he’d played the full year. Georgiades woild also possibly be top 30, but again it’s more leans to the fact that they haven’t played thus can’t really rate them at what they have improved on and others have surpassed them, rather than the injury itself.

Hey Pie, in your podcast episode today you mentioned Brisbane haven't nominated Martyn as an academy selection, do you have a list of all nominations yet?
Nah not yet, that was courtesy of briztoon and Brisbane interview. I’m just going off the various bits and bobs I hear.

Ummmm really.

I was actually going to ask you about that as well.

I know Noble only mentioned as being interested in Coleman and Cumberland in the SEN interview. And that Twomey mentioned we nominated Lachie Johnson for the rookie draft.

I was going to ask if you know who we nominated for the National Draft and Rookie Draft.

Hope I haven’t caused some miscommunication here.

You'd mentioned you'd be out of spots? The safe option we've gone with for the draft preview going up tonight is that the club hasn't confirmed interest in him. I get the feeling another club is keen to throw a late pick on him and Lions won't want to match.

Any " bits and bobs " about which teams look like bidding on Liam Henry / Fin Maginness
Not sure about Maginness but there's been some public info about Carlton re: Henry. I keep feeling he will do what normally happens and slip down into the early teens, but makes sense for the Blues to bid.

If Carlton want to demonstrate they are back to being a serious club thats happy to be hated... they should bid on both Henry and mCGuiness at 9..both would fit their needs...

Such a shame the Cats don't have a pick before us then, eh!

I doubt any other club shares the Cats bleeding heart syndrome when it comes to the Hawks…..Cept maybe the Bombers.

do you have a link to your podcast..?

It's on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts etc.

Henry I can absolutely see. Maginness, I would not be shocked if Hawthorn didn't match. Don't get me wrong, if push came to shove they'd probably pull the trigger, but it's one of those scenarios that if say a McAsey is still on the board, then I reckon they will let him go potentially. It rarely happens a club that early will bid and the player not matched though.

Hawks should have the live 11, then Maginness will force their next picks back. But it's effectively two top 20 picks anyway, so a good win for them.
