SNFL Div 1 discussion 2022

With all the people and families involved at a football club, I find it really hard to believe that every club can’t find a person willing to do 2 hours work, one day per week.

I don’t mean volunteer by the way, I mean pay someone. It was over 20 years ago when I did it and I got paid, wouldn’t have done it otherwise.

I have noticed lots of posters mention lack of player numbers, it’s quite concerning, but umpiring is a job and for a division 1 football comp not to have them, is bad.

it all comes down to people putting their hand up to help.

When I was 18/19 entering the senior club I was more than happy to get involved in a small capacity (as were some of my likeminded mates)

As the years grew so did the amount of time I gave back. Now with young kids and getting to the end of my football I'm more time poor but I don't see many of the next gen getting involved which concerns me for the future of local sport.

Good win by your boys on the weekend (Seniors) tough one for the 2s.

Re: umpires and last touch out of bounds rule. Simply the league wants consistency across the board. Clubs have expressed concerns over finding volunteers on Match Days (not forgetting you also need volunteers to run the canteen, time keeper, scoreboard, water carriers etc) and trying to find someone to run boundary on top of that in the twos is difficult enough. The clubs agreed with the league on the out of bounce rule.

League is extremely short on umpires. In 15 years, umpires wages have gone up less then $35. Players wages… depending on who you speak to has increased anywhere from $200+.

Div 1 Senior Umpire = $140 per game
Div 1 Top Senior Players = $400-$800 per game

If the umpires were paid fair wages you’d have a lot more put up their hand to do the job and eliminate the issue of this out of bounce rule.

Two cents worth.

Anyway, good to have footy back.

I'm in total agreement on wages. It's ridiculous and can't believe it hasn't been addressed when it's been clear as day for 6 months there's been big umpire issues.

It should be immediately increased to $250 per game for umpires and if that doesn't work, keep going up.

The AFL simply need to fork out here - or else the sport is done.

It was already an issue pre-pandemic and it's worse now. The pandemic has had the same impact as it has on player numbers, it forced people to break lifetime habits of what they do week after week, year after year, many have now seen something different and liked it.

I think the sport can recover but it's going to take a few years.

Spot on BM. I don’t want to turn this into an umpires forum but there’s a huge pay difference between local league umpires and next level (VFL) and then even bigger difference between VFL and AFL. To give you a perspective, a VFL Senior Field Umpire is earning approximately $18-$25p/h when you break down total umpiring commitments (training, travel, match day) this is the 2nd top tier where you have players running around on $1K + per game (AFL listed).

SFNL pathway to the VFL/AFL has seen a lot of talent come through but once they are done at that level what is their incentive to come back to the SFNL, $140 per game? Really, when the umpire they are umpiring with is on $140 per game as well and it’s their first season. That’s why a lot of them decide to hang up the whistle and all that experience is lost in a blink.

As for volunteers, the clubs I’ve seen getting ahead are the ones paying for off field ‘volunteer’ roles. Eg Canteen staff, Football Managers, Cleaners etc

Back to football, how are everyone’s player numbers? The lower divisions are already seeing forfeits in the reserves due to lack of numbers. Have we got any Div 1 sides that may struggle come mid year?

Think the boys will be in the mix for finals. Decent core that are a fairly tight knit bunch which seems to get the best out of them in terms of competitiveness and effort.

Can we talk about the last touch rule with games that didn't have boundary umpires? How did those who played with the rule go?

Why aren't clubs allowed to provide a boundary umpire each just so we can get a proper game of football?
Easy fix lads , umpire throws it up 10m in from boundary where the ball goes out , not rocket science SFNL

It's very difficult.

You can pay $30 plus a feed / drink but it can still be hard.

Keep in mind for each team (senior clubs have 2-3 teams for men only) you need a team manager, gate attendants, boundary umpire, goal umpire, timekeeper, runner, water carriers, umpire escort.

Plus you have a BBQ, canteen, bar etc which all need running across an 8 hour day.

Committee roles, fundraising, social media, assistant coaches / football dept...

The workload for volunteers is an all-time high and they've never been harder to get. Pretty sure AFL Vic have recognised it as a major issue for local footy

You have less people around clubs these days and those that are there see it as their right to relax and drink piss, not work.

Ive been involved on the committee of a sporting club and it’s a lot of work and isn’t for everyone, on the topic of boundary umps especially, I would be thinking of advertising locally, not just to club members and supporters but mostly to high school kids looking for a part time job or looking to earn a few extra $$$.

Any idea if the drop off in numbers is a SFNL thing or is it a problem for other leagues?

Across the country.

The SMJFL is feeder of umpires into the SFNL and they already advertise in schools, newsletters, letterbox drops etc

Bottom line is, the money being paid is less then that same student/teenager can earn working at McDonalds or a retail shop… probably a bit less abuse they’ll cop as well.

This weeks selections ?

Springvale to beat city in a tight one

Dingley comfortable over colts

Yeah but you're not part of the millennial generation. Young blokes expect everything gifted to them.

The classic is: 'the old bring your dog to footy trick', works every time. "Sorry can't help out today I've got the dog"

Just wait until kids without a cent to their name start going back to Europe during winter again, putting pressure on availability of players & volunteers

Now play at Livingstone. Which would be 3 different grounds in the last 20 years (roughly).
Finished up at the racecourse in the early 2000s, then went over to Casey Fields (but couldn’t do gate takings there) so moved to Livingstone. New estate again and facilities so an upgrade once again on Casey.
Another new one? How many home grounds have they had!

Mordialloc vs Dingley
St kilda city vs Springvale districts
Dingley vs port Melbourne colts
Bentleigh vs east Malvern
Cranbourne vs St Pauls

What a week of footy

Springy city should be a good game
Dingley vs colts - will they bounce back the colts or go 0-2?
Bentleigh vs panthers which one gets their first win?
Doggies vs the eagles? Big test for both teams!
I think chelt will take control over mordy!

What’s our thoughts?

Cheltenham missing 6-8 players due to injury before today, had a shocker, but Mordy we’re up for it and now have 2 wins
