Trade a junk pick for Oliver

Midfield solved
Sam Cumming is also going to be a gun, I would hope Reid will be keeping a keen eye on his positioning to see if something can be done.

I think Melbourne played this well, they obviously wanted the best deal, but to see a club influence the choice was impressive after it started to come out that Adelaide was preferred.
I wonder if Petracca preferred Adelaide but then Gold Coast came out nowhere. Petracca possibly told them he wouldn't come back if he couldn't get traded to Adelaide, so Melbourne doubled down by dropping the Oliver bombshell, forcing the Gold Coast or nowhere option.
We pull out, Trac picks Gold Coast, Oliver now looking for a club??

True. Adelaide could have really fought but deep down they knew it would end up costing way too much and limit future resources. The main reason Adelaide could have pulled out was because it would have hurt the Ah Chee deal.

All I am getting from this is you wanted us to do what it takes.

If we walked away it is likely what Melbourne wanted would have forced us out of the Ah Chee deal, cost us a place in next years draft and we could forget about any other player.

This what you want for a 30yo?

Not at all. There is obviously a fair and reasonable price for Petracca

I actually think Reid is quite a good operator in trades, and I don't think he would have paid massive overs for him.

I think the most likely situation is that we (and Reid) knew the asking price ahead of time, were comfortable enough with it to progress the negotiations to the point of an in-person meeting, but were ultimately pitching our club against Gold Coast and it was up to Petracca to make the decision.

Petracca then made a decision that he wanted to play for Gold Coast. We did not pull out of the race, we were in it up until the last minute, and the decision didn't go our way.

The reporting that we "pulled out" is purely to save face and at best might be a technicality knowing beforehand we weren't going to win his signature

Well thats changed as their list manager was on interview saying they were hitting the draft again

We tried, we were up against it given the draft hand we have v GC, is what it is.

I said earlier, much more risk involved with Oliver, but potentially more upside so let’s see where that lands.
Suns also have a deeper list player wise if Melbourne would prefer a proven or a young player projecting as a possible top end talent as part of the Petracca trade. I could always see the Sun's putting forward a contracted Flanders who wants back to Victoria, just need to convince him now.

Do some of you go to buy a car without test driving it or getting a mechanical inspection? Just because the car was worth a pretty penny 4 years ago, doesn't mean it is today. And the seller can ask whatever price they want, power is with the buyer to determine what they want to pay post inspection. The crows would be negligent if they didn't follow the path they have with Petracca.

And an interview is best done in person. Not over the phone.

  • Petracca may be trying to squeeze an extra year in the deal
  • Petracca may be demanding midfield years, despite Sid and Curtin coming through which may see him pushed to half forward in years to come
  • Perhaps Petracca didnt like Adelaide the city. Or his wife prefers Gold Coast.
  • Once petracca visited Adelaide, Melbourne then chirped the Rachele and pick 1 deal and we dont want to pay that.
  • Medical results weren't as good as we hoped, meaning we dont want to pay Melbourne's price tag. This is only known after a medical! Not prior like some posters seem to think
  • Petracca didnt click with those he met.
  • Outside revelations with trades we dont know about.
  • Melbourne not flexible to what we value Petracca as after the medical
  • Paying Melbourne's price tag means we cant afford something else like Bailey next year.
  • Oliver's news impacted our decision

Turning this into a blame on the crows reeks of reaching for anything you possibly can to sink the boots in to the club. Particularly when you are just speculating, and your evidence consists primarily of believing the media who are wrong vast majority of the time.

So let me get this straight the club went all in on Petracca and just recently they realised with the picks they got they couldn’t get the deal done. How stupid are the crows they should have thought about that before they went all in on Petracca.

If we don’t get an A grader midfielder in this trade period and we play with the same midfield next year I’m going to be pissed

Melbourne have cocked this up though. Tell Trac to explore, then Trac says he wants out, then Melbourne kick Clarry out and suggest they'd be happy for Trac to stay. I mean, that's amateur.

They undermined their contract position when they green lighted him looking around. Trac has wanted out 2 years in a row now and there's not a snowballs he stays there next year, so Melbourne will have to do a deal. Getting the deal done will be difficult, but not as difficult as it would have been if we were being seen to be "prising out a required player". Trac will get to where he wants to go.

Their contract position isn’t undermined by ‘green lighting’ his exploration, he can do that on a red light. They hold a long term contract on him and are happy for him to stay, which they’ve said publicly. The cards have always been in their favour.

There is no scenario where there was a fair and reasonable offer to Melbourne from Adelaide. Adelaide pulled out as it would **** us over. Case closed.

Damn so the generationally hungover Suns leadership team and coaches really sold the awful for food, subpar training facilities and comparable to SA beaches location to Petracca then.
Regardless of what people in here think, there'd be very few people from Melbourne who would choose to live in Adelaide over the GC.

It's not even that bad. Sure, Surfers is a bit of a shithole, but there's lovely spots on the hinterland that would be more than worth to buy a property on.

Well aside from the fact that you're making as many assumptions as I am, you're also forgetting that GC's hand was enhanced even further by the Flanders situation, which may not have been evident at the beginning of proceedings. The Melbourne situation has also been pretty fluid, given that Oliver was told at exit he was required, then 2 weeks later told by King to find another club.

As for your take that Petracca forced our hand, a less PTSD riddled person would say that we had our buying limit and it was reached. Happens at a thousand auctions every week, and I bet all of those buyers were just as keen too.

I'm looking at the balance of what is more likely.

Were we in the box seat until a last minute curveball that forced us to pull out of the deal?

Or was Petracca presented with a genuine choice between Adelaide and Gold Coast and he chose Gold Coast on its merits?

You would have to wonder about the legalities. If trac took the contract to court would it be upheld based on what Melbourne have done. It's interesting.

No it’s not, it’s an iron clad AFL playing contract. You have no background in law, stop thinking everything you walk across is an opportunity to sue someone.

They are hitting the draft, but they want to turn one of their high picks to another first and a future first.

If we wanted to trade into this years' draft then our f1 will be enticing, think carlton and Richmond, but it seems nobody wants to get into this year's draft.

But they demanded too much at the last minute, that we weren't aware of before getting so far into the process?

Nah
While I'm normally pretty sceptical of the clubs messaging around this stuff (and still am a bit in this situation). It is possible that things changed between our discussions with Trac and then chats with Melbourne.

King coming in and saying get rid of Oliver means they can then take on more of Tracs contract as well and ask for more at the table.

Initially it might have been 14+ full salary and that was the starting point but wouldn't have been miles away from what Melbourne where after. But now they are saying we don't need the money we can cover some so CG are able to offer way more in trade (cause they can afford him now). So you'll have to give us more than they can or no go.

We know we can't get much more on the table.

Not saying not getting Trac isn't a failure - it is to some degree. But if we get something else over the line it will be OK.

Not holding my breath on that front either though....
