Schmidt will be the next star at the Swans. The last couple of years have produced a star in Malceski.
I've no doubt that Roos had to make the hard decision on whether he had to go with Schneider or Schmidt. Both a similar player with heaps more upside to Schmidt. The poor guy was in & out of the team & I can guarantee that had he played in the Elimination final against the Pies, he would have give a better go then the yelp that Schneids gave.

I've no doubt that Roos was thinking of regular game time for Schmidt when making the decision to trade Schneider!

I guess you're right - in the sense that the function of all players is to either win the ball or present themselves to receive the ball. And then to progressively pass to a team mate closer to goal until someone's able to get it through the big sticks. Preferably all while preventing the opposition from doing it more times that you and your team mates.

I guess in that sense, Phillips is capable of filling Spida's shoes.

I guess I should have elaborated on what I meant by "fulfilling the same function".

I meant they can both kick for goals more accurately than others. They're similar in size, with Schmidt having only 5cm on Schneider and similar in their level of ability to "win the ball or present themselves to receive the ball" and "progressively pass to a team mate closer to goal" in order "to get it through the big sticks", or put it through themselves, more often than others, as I said.

I recall two years ago when Malceski and Moore were on a par.Always best two in the ressies.We all know what happened with Mal but Moore injured his thumb badly and hasn't had a decent run since.I have no doubt Moore will be a long servant of the club.He is tough in the clinches.
I see Schmidt as a player with impeccable skills but I think he would make a good forward as he can get the ball and knows where the goals are.Also he hasn't got the "must pass it to BBB"syndrome and that is such a plus.He also has a strong body for his size and that big rump of his could be used as a great screen.
Our list is good.We haven't lost any strength IMO.

I like the look of Moore, but I haven't seen much of him. Schmidt's performed well in a few senior games this year, hence the basis of my admiration and belief in him as a player.

you're not alone....i think we have to look to youth, be a bit experimental, to reverse the trend of this season.....
i can endure a period without success, or without even finals footy, if it means at the very least we get away from the stop-start football that characterises us in our bad patches....i HATE it when we lose but it's tolerable if we play a style worth watching, that brings some excitement and reason to look ahead.....
if we keep on playing games such as the two losses to c'wood in the last three weeks of our 07 season i will just not bother, it's too frustrating
i love the tough, physical style we perfected while we mixed it with that dash off halfback and those bursts of 4-5 goals in 10 minutes that we've been capable of

I was discussing this with my dad...and yeah, I don't see us being overly successful next year...Premiership/finals wise. Why not give the youngsters a go?

Surely you guys can't be serious. This IS the AFL comp you guys are talking about isn't it. Geelong lost their only game in 18 odd weeks of football by a point in Rd 21 at home against Port. Who was out of that team? Bartel, Ling, Chapman & another player. They get them back for the GF at a more friendly ground for Port, & absolutely smash the pants off them by 119 points.

You guys severely underestimate our players & you are a worry. By playing the players you suggested in the twos, & playing all these youngsters all at once, we will be smashed week in week out .........................until..............................of coarse.................we bring in the experienced players again.

You know what! I'm really tiring of reading this crap by some of you guys. You are showing a real lack of knowledge for the system, & the game itself by suggesting "we keep this player...... we keep that player......we play this player ......we drop that player".

Please! We lost to WC & Essendon by a point & drew with Brisbane. Bazza wasn't fit from Rd 2 onwards. Leo missed 5 weeks with a hammy just prior to the finals. Kennelly basically wasn't there all year. Luke Ablett hyperflexed his knee earlier in the year & was clearly restricted as was O'keefe in the latter part of the season & LRT was missing until Rd 21. God knows how many others battled out the season with a niggling injury.
All this & we still had the second best defence for the year.

Let's just say we won those 3 games. Quite feasible as Geelong lost by a point with just 2 or 3 players out. That would have put us 2nd or 3rd.

Perhaps once we got to this point, then we could have taken your advice & dropped Leo, Bolton, Matthews, Davo, Richards, McVeigh & Bevo for the first final & brought in Laidlaw, Moore, Grundy, Vogels, Jack, White, Thornton & another younster who "will be the future" of the club. Just for the Final. Perhaps we could have played Vogels on Rocca to replace Leo if we happened to play the Pies. Play Grundy on Rusling in place of Richards, Jack & Moore doing a tagging job on Thomas & Pendles in place of Matthews, Bolton or McVeigh, & Laidlaw to replace Davo as the sharp shooter from 50 - 55 metres out.
Oh........one more thing that would be a necessity in this team. For added speed in the middle, we'll throw in Schneider to blow the socks off them with his stamina, & we'll throw the ever reliable & always super alert Dempster to just drop in the hole in front of Grundy & to become the link man running out of defence!!

Mmmmmm.................I'd love to go to that game & come out only losing by 80 points.

Very well said. If we won those 3 games then everyone would be saying that we had a great season. If we won all 3 games instead of losing 2 by a point and drawing the 3rd then the Swans would have had a extra 10 points.

look at what collingwood did
a team tipped to miss the 8 and forced to play any number of kids in either their first or second years, and this was with barely a ruck contingent i might add (at least we're strong in rucks)
and they've finished the season a fine 4th with a blooded crop of outstanding young players ready to challenge for a flag next season
oh, and they finished our season for us as well, and why? because those players you hold up as being our only hope for the immediate future could not keep up with the pies' speed and skill

we did NOT win them....we gave away too big a start against west coast...why? coz we played gutless, tepid, futile football until it was too late
we lost to essendon because we have too many players ("experienced") who can't kick goals when it matters
we drew with brisbane because we lost our bollocks and tried to save a lead rather than go for it and just win the friggin match

now i'm really fecked off....part of me wants roos to go in with the same tired faces in our 22 for round 1 next season, half a dozen of whom FAILED in our loss to c'wood in the finals, and let's see what happens
a drab, tired, spiritless loss, to set the pattern for a season ending in the bottom four

Every team needs it. It's what makes the younger ones learn their trade.
The Pies DIDN"T blood all these players at once either. Compliments of a near bottom finish, with which you would cry foul once again should the Swans ever do it, they picked up Pendles & Thomas. Two players that were in the top ten in the draft. Heath Shaw has been around as long as Schneider, as has Swan.

When are you going to start making your valid point Rancidpants. Or.......................was that it?

I think we did okay this season - the main concern I had is that we only beat 2 top eight teams this year, Hawthorn and Port. While most of the other lists are on the way up with their younger players showing significant signs of improvement, our side seem to have peaked.

We'll have to see how Hall comes back from injury, but the likes of Jude Bolton, Matthews, Crouch, Leo Barry are not going to 'improve', if anything, they would start going the other way. I have nothing against our 'game plan' but I just hope for the future's sake (beyond 09), we start playing our kids a bit more - and I'm not convinced that they wouldn't do the same job or a better than some of the more senior members we have in the team.

The likes of Laidlaw and Barlow came in and in my view performance even better than some of our senior players - and Laidlaw was extremely unlucky not to get a second game.
