but again, great work, can we have something on Beams next? :)

Just to clarify my posts,

I have only even put SSB II's name in the same post as Hirdy's in answer to a question of height, which I think is not only moot now as they were/are the same height, but because height really has little determining factor in potential greatness.

But....as the names have been linked by others and yourself....

Hirdy played 0 games in his first year for the Bombers, ,mainly due to injury.
He played 4 Senior games in 1992.
He played 16 games in 1993, 3 of these finals and 1 of those a winning GF.
In this, his third year he was ranked 121st statistically. (I know but the only measure across era)

Sidey has played 11 games in his first year and played 3 finals already in a top 4 side. Ranking 338th

Make sure you understand I am not making any claim Sidey is or will be a James Hird.

Who was the James Hird before Hirdy....well there wasn't one was there.

Sidey could be the next Steele Sidebottom.:D
So I guess Sidebottom will be able to dominate the forward line when he's 20 years old, should we put him there? Hence, AFAIC there is no reason whatsoever to use James Hird as a comparison. It's specifically done to compare one of our own to a great in the hopes that we have a player of that potential calibre coming through our ranks. Yet for whatever reason, when a far more realistic comparison is made, it's almost like he's being called a dud. It's all about unrealistic expectations and labels from Collingwood supporters.

I'm just pointing out it's far too easy to make blanket statements about players and what they can never achieve.
It's also easy to make blanket assumptions about why some people have a different opinion on a given player, past or present.

There is nothing in their early careers to point to Hird or Sidebottom being similar players but by the same token their is nothing in where or how Hird played which is pre-requisite in any other player being a champion. In fact a champion can really play in a totally different way than any past champion. Even have different qualities.

Sidebottom is and will never be a James Hird.

This in no way limits his chances of becoming a champion.
Nor does his height.

I agree with Dundalis - any Hird comparison peplexes me (as it did with Thomas also).

Hird was a champion marking forward, who could occasionally go into the centre square if needed. You shouldn't be comparing anyone to Hird unless at the very least they were a marking target in the forwardline.

I agree that a Sidebottom comparison could be someone like Lockyer or O'Bree even (although he has better skills than O'Bree). Lockyer's dual sidedness and neatness of disposal, and O'Bree's inside ability and tackling ability. Neither possess much pace, neither are kamikaze inside mids like Burns, Beams, etc.

I think Sidebottom will turn out to be a good honest player for us and to be compared to these two players is a compliment for any youngster.

Sidebottom will be better then Lockyer and O'Bree. I see Steele more like Pendles as he has the Skills and Also the Evasiveness pf pendles

From what I've seen it's much easier for supporters to make blanket statements about what players can achieve, than what they can't, with Dale Thomas and Steele Sidebottom being prime examples.

Of course champions of the game have different qualities. It's just that they pretty much all show the qualities that could make them that good even early in their career. Even a young player that averages 5 touches a game, but shows clear standout qualities, I would put higher potential wise, than a young kid who gets it 15 times a game and shows solid skills. That doesn't mean the former will become a champion of course and better than the latter, just that they have a higher ceiling if they do fulfil their potential.

Hird always had standout attributes that made him a potential superstar in the making. Sidebottom doesn't. Maybe he'll add some strings to his bow that will put him there, who knows it's not out of the realms of possibility, but not based on what he's shown so far. So far he's shown he's a very solid young player. I haven't seen more than that. Extremely confident, and cool under pressure, even in a Finals atmosphere, which is great. But that alone doesn't project to potential superstar. There have been plenty of young players to have come in and played extremely well in Finals and not done anything in the game. IMO you can only make a realistic case about what he could be based purely on what he's shown, not what he could possibly develop or add to his game.

I could see Sidebottom as a poor man's Pendlebury. Skillwise they have similarities, but not only is Sidebottom a lesser version physically, but also in terms of evasive skills. Somewhere between Lockyer and Pendlebury is probably about right.

Sidey had a good quarter or so in that final, very fine prospect.

@Dundalis you may well be right. I smell a kid who can produce under pressure.

He's prettier than Beams, not as tough yet but I think that over-quoted 10 goal GF effort does actually mean something: pressure means very little to this bloke.

In huge games when it really matters I think he will produce his best.

Beams and Sidey to be our inside squad with Wellingham trimming the packs with silk.

Just on comparisions, Steele looks like a mix of Simon Black and a young Luke Ball, he doesnt have the agression like Ball but he just reminds me of him. The similarities with Black are also there, evasiveness, not overly quick but will run all day and great skills.

Better not say that too loud...
