I see absolutely no reason why we couldn't.

It all depends on the state of the salary cap.

I reckon it's now as tight as a drum, and with a lot of up and coming players who will be needing a pay rise. I think the only way we could afford Steele is if either (1) he is a very generous lad who will play for Collingwood for significantly under the market rate or (2) we sign him up on a very long term contract.

You clearly disagree with that assessment, and that's cool.

And neither of us has any real idea about the state of our salary cap.

You're correct in saying that we're making assumptions about the state of the salary cap, however, it's highly likely that many player contracts would have been front loaded after the departures of Thomas, Beams and even Lumumba, to free up cap room for the future. Whilst the totality of a contract such as Cloke's is huge, he could easily be on less than $500k this year in reality. The same goes for our other highly paid players.

Regardless of any of that though, given reports that contract negotiations for Steele are going well and he hopes to be signed before the season begins, I can't see him demanding 6 years. That's a number that the club would be extremely hesitant to commit to outside exceptional circumstances (i.e. Treloar) so I doubt they'd be so public about negotiations if that were the case.

Funny that isn't it?
If not for his broken thumb round 1 2015, he would be a Copeland Medallist now.

I had heard a whisper that his contract extension was close to being done. This public admission only confirms it.
If, and when, this happens he will be a Pie for life.
I'm stoked about that.

The Copeland isn't a medal, it is a trophy.

It's going back a bit, but IIRC the reports at the time about Cloke's contract was that it was back ended?

Don't know, it's all speculation I guess.

Until a player comes out and says "Yeah, contract negotiations have stalled, the club is clearly taking the piss and low balling me. I'm gunna explore options elsewhere" ...

... I'm going to take any comments that come out of a player's mouth about their contract as nothing more than regurgitated media training.

Do you think we could afford him otherwise?

I'm not sure, but I hope so because I would be disappointed if we went as hard as we did at Treloar only to lose Sidebottom out the other end.

In the end for the same reason Swan never got a long term deal I think we'd be silly to offer Steele one and 3 years is about right, IMO.

I think some are overrating Steele by comparing his situation with Treloar's, just as so many used to when comparing him to Beams.

Treloar is already comfortably better and is also quite a bit younger. He really is the next level up and also, we had to pay overs to get him on the open market. Completely different situations.

Even if it was, it's not uncommon for payments to be changed to suit clubs needs to pay the TPP cap.

True, but I'm not referring to Steele's comments so much as the 'STEELE WANTS TO STAY' headline on the club website. The club itself seems very confident that Steele will re-sign sooner rather than later. It's a far cry from Scharenbergs re-signing last year when the club seemed very hesitant to say definitively that he was staying unless someone like Eddie was absolutely pushed in to saying it when flat out asked about it.

Boris THIS
As good as Steele is, he's not the elite player Treloar is.
He's next level down

Ps. We did give Treloar a six year deal, so those kind of deals are definitely on the table.

That be more for trying get Players away from there Club they are at. More then Offering to Players at your Own Club

It is a medal, but they aren't referred to as Medallsts.

It isn't the Copeland Medal, it is the Copeland Trophy.
Yes, you are 100% correct,
But that shouldn't stop any opportunity to pay a big thank you to Mrs Pendlebury .... Trophy and all
:D

I'll thank her when she starts birthing future Collingwood champions. Still shattered Moore only had one son.
This is true.
We may see some new Daicos in a year or two.
