I guess this is the problem with targetting talented, bottom-aged kids. Generally later in the business end of the TAC Cup season, they're putting their bloody name up in lights. :(

If Sidebottom doesn't last to our pick, and we don't have another quality mid (eg. Hartlett) slide to us, I'd certainly be happy enough with Trengove... providing we got serious about mids in the 2nd round.

30 kicks and 10 goals!

Sidebottom goes into the top 10 now for sure, Hartlett the one to come out IMO

We will still get a good player at pick 11.

It wont be sidebottom though.[/quote]

I have had a look at Steele Sidebottom's game in the TAC grandfinal (highlights at least) on youtube and I have to say I hope we don't use pick 11 on him if he's still there. The defence he was playing against looked like a block of swiss cheese it had that many holes in it. Looking at Steele, I see....

+good skills both sides
+Pretty strong overhead
+hard at it.
-a couple of poor decisions (attempt to run around the man on mark looked really bad)
-not particularly quick I didn't think.

I think overall he has the tools to be a solid AFL player but I just can't see his type being a star at AFL level. He certainly woudn't be able to perform the small forward role like he did in the GF. A decent backman would have prevented most of his goals.

It would be easy to get sucked into taking him early by his GF game. I think that long term it could be misleading IMO.

But it was a big game, and he stood up, head and shoulders above everyone. You have to take this into account.

Also take into account that his whole TAC finals series were superb

He played well in the Champs (AA selection)

He had a great season with the Bushrangers

It's not like as if he had this one game out of the blue, he has been dominating for the whole year.

I don't think anyone expects that he will play as a small forward and kick bags of goals. His future certainly lies in the midfield.

He has smarts, great skills, endurance, and his only question mark is pace.

A lack of pace hasn't stopped other top midfielders of his type such as Williams, Mitchell and Bartel, just to name a few.

One bloke said last year that he'd be surprised if we didn't take J-Mac if he was available at our pick.

The year before that Jabso had a dream that we'd take Ben Reid with our first.

2005 Didak's Left Foot gave us the inside word on both Thomas and Pendles.
Happened again this year - With Steele.

Those I had a dream we drafted Trengove but that did not happen

I don't remember anyone saying definitively: "we will take Steele Sidebottom". Vinnie mentioned him as a player we'd be keen on over a year ago, and we'd been following him since. A lot of people had him as a player they'd like us to take, or that we hoped would still be there.

In contrast, on the morning of the 2005 draft, Didak's Left Foot posted and said "we're going to take Thomas and Pendlebury at #2 and #5". No room for interpretation there.

And "gormanisahack" came out with this one prior to the 2007 draft. He was wrong about the pick, but he was the only one around who linked us with McCarthy and he was pretty confident about it.

There was a Rumour Thread night before the draft where a Poster said we would take Steele if he was taken at 11 as he said

I think by the night before, most Collingwood supporters thought we'd take Sidebottom at #11 if available though. Burgatron had the same in his revised Phantom after it became clear that Hill would go to Freo, and that was about Thursday afternoon.

It was pretty clear that Steele met all of the requirements that we were looking for in a player - Hence why I was able to pick him as a player of interest last November (well that, and the fact that we like kids from rural areas with sexually suggestive names). When he put up that Grand Final performance, which, after drafting Daisy and Ryan Cook after putting on excellent TAC GF performances, is clearly something that the recruiting staff value highly, you could just about write it down, contingent on his availability.

It was also clear that he was a Top 10 candidate, and not in the top half of it, in all likelihood (although I do give credence to the rumour that Essendon were interested at #5), which meant he was always a chance to be one of the top prospects available at #11.

Suggesting that we'll take a player that fits the mould of what we're looking for, is talented enough to be taken higher than the spot we're picking, and meets several criteria that we have previously valued very highly, including performing on a big stage, being bottom aged and having a strong work ethic, in the event that he's available... No, that suggestion hardly requires telepathic ability.

Yeah when Freo decided to go with Hill Instead of Rich it did make Steele Favorite for our Pick those on Friday Burgan said Rich was even a Chance for Pick 11
