Despite all the innuendos, it is very strange he goes from Geelong to afl footy boss then back to Geelong immediately without any break.

Cmon, you gotta atleast try to hide it. Its like when the auditor changes side.. frowned upon..

Hocking revealed the only time McLachlan overruled a decision was around the potential extended goal-square at the end of 2018.

"He was very strong on that, [not] changing any of the lines. He's very strong around the traditions of the game, which I value and certainly respect," Hocking said.

"I remember the conversation when I rolled in and said 'we’re going to double the goal-square in size', it was a bit of fun between us."

So Gill didn't want the goal square extended... What's the difference from what we now have, where the goal square is all but obsolete (except it allows them to plonk forwards right in front of goal for their shots, another decision trying to eke out more goals)? I guess it's called a goal square and not a kickout square for a reason.

So Steve is being celebrated for raising the scoring of the game by the media, although he’s only improved it since the lowest scoring seasons in over 50 years…

Those lowest scoring seasons that occurred after Hockings initial rule changes

So he’s implemented more rules to improve the scoring that he ruined with his rules in the first place but the scoring is still below the ave before he implemented anything
How anyone can say his changes has been a success is absolutely delusional

“The 2019 season was the lowest-scoring for a whopping 52 seasons, with the average team score a miserly 80.4 points per game. The year before it was 83.5 and in 2017 it was 89.5. At the turn of the century the average team score was 103 points per game.”

Hocking has STOPPED me attending games after 45 years you stupid, stupid campaigner.

If you’re soft enough to not go to games now but somehow managed to sit through the utter fecal matter your club served up over an extended period in the past, or for that matter matches against Ross Lyon coached sides etc etc it says more about you than the current game

You don’t get it, do you? We ****ing won.

I’m not sitting in the boondocks watching us play against a stacked deck. You wouldn’t play cards against a bloke who cheats.

The game is an overofficiated, uncontested shitshow. No one understands what is happening when the whistle blows anymore, including the players. The supposed “free scoring” of the first 3 rounds has become atrocious low scoring games or massive blowouts. I doubt anyone who says they would honestly watch a game not featuring their own club… I can’t bring myself to anymore, the frustration of watching boring chip chip kicking and holding the ball never being paid is unbearable

The rule changes SHocking has introduced have not worked to speed the game up, increase scoring etc. A professional would have introduced the new rules for an entire season at a state league without tinkering, unless things got disastrous, and see what happens.

Also deliberately trying to change how the game is played by certain of the best teams, which is exactly what he did, is very strange. It is almost, but not exactly, corruption. I don't see it as trying to trash the tigers. I see it as trying to create something closer to AFLX. The high pressure, chaos game style is the opposite of that aesthetic.
From The Age 3 hours ago:

"While scoring overall is not as high to this point in the season as it was in 2017 and 2018, it is not far off. It is also higher than 2019 and 2020 (although 2020 did have shorter quarters). On the celebration of the return of the key forward, there have been 35 hauls of five goals or more by a player so far in 2021."

Bags of 5 after 16 rounds

2019: 36
2018: 42
2017: 40
2016: 50

And if you accept that a bag of 4 in 2020 = a bag of 5 in a full-length game... 2020: 40

Sorry, no sale.

Hmm. I'll need to find another stat.

Seriously though Ron The Bear you come across mostly as a reasonable poster. What is your take on Steve Hocking's tenure as COO?

Seems to be a correlation between the amount of Richmond posters bagging the game and the performance of their team on field.

Nah, Hocking has done a shit job, the game is awful in it's current state.

However, I'm celebrating that he's gone, now he can't do any more damage to our game

I won't give him the credit for single-handedly bringing the game down, but he's been a failure by any objective measure. We may never know how big a failure as attendances are COVID-affected after being at a 10-year high before the meddling, but there's little doubt he's been marched given he doesn't start at Geelong until season's end.

MRP/MRO was no more consistent than it ever was. Maybe he did good work with AFLW, I wouldn't know.

He wasn’t sacked but it would be a conflict for him to stay on
