Cain Ackland was the best bench-presser in the league at one point, took it off Gehrig for a year or two when he went to the Saints.
Sums it up, really.

Talk about a bloke who looked like Tarzan and played like ****ing Jane!

Agree with those who talk of Judd's core strength. On the rare occasion he goes topless during pre-season he appears to have an unusually developed set of back muscles - almost reptilian.

Swan is not the strongest "pound for pound" if we are using the bench test as a determination of strength, seeing as he weighs 88kg and benches 145. Paul Bower is/was 85kg and also benched 145. I've seen Kade Simpson bench 125 at barely 75kg. I've heard Jake King apparently pushes 125 also and I'm pretty sure he is listed at around 75?

Earl Boykins is 60kg and bench presses 143kg for 3 reps.

Swan isn't even close to the strongest pound for pound player, according to Shaun Griggs twitter Nathan Foley at 178cm and 80kg benches 145kg.
This has just degraded into a dick measuring contest though.

Sterngth is not how much you can bench press...

I agree, how does this type of discussion always lead to how much someone can bench press? There must be a more effective way to look at whole body strength.

Anyway I believe Sandilands would be the strongest man in the comp by a long way. Then you would have your "celebrated" strong men like Brown, Hall, Cloke and whoever else like that.

I saw someone mentioned that bench press comp from the 90's, I remember watching it also, Dunstall won when everyone was expecting Plugger or Paul Salmon (I think he finished 2nd). Ablett and Jackovich also featured in the top ten.
Gehrig was definitely the strongest player last decade.

I think Gehrig still holds the Bench record at both West Coast and at the Saints. Given that he left the eagles as a back flank / wing runner and his record hasn't been beaten by the likes of Q-Stick, Cox, etc... makes it pretty impressive I would have thought.

Current: Power - Brown, Hall, Rutten.
Core strength - Ablett, Judd, J.Selwood, Hayes.

Yes Fraser Gehrig and Ashley McIntosh share the record at west coast expect Natia to beat it eventually last season he went from 100kg's to 135kg's had shoulder surgry this preseason so has been limited on weights this preseason but give it two years and he will lead the league.

Dean Kemp was very strong in the legs used to out lift our ruckman in leg weights.

Chris Judd in the 2005/06/07 era was very strong in core strength with only Daniel Kerr stronger.

Hille would go alright in Core Strength i reckon. Seems to be pretty big in the middle/chest/leg areas. However what do we consider the strongest? Bench Press, Squats ect? I would probably go with Sandi however.

dunstall would have to be up there in terms of all time, the guy was a bull who hardly got beaten in a 1 on 1 ever and considering he was alot smaller than lockett its a fair effort.

A lot of people on here thinking size = strength lol.

Out of the middfielders I reckon Chappy, Hayes, Ablett and Swan are the strongest overall...good luck taking one of them guys to ground....although Hayes got Swan to the deck in the GF  never actually seen that done before.

Maxfield from Sydney used to be a huge unit, even got ordered from the club to shed kilos one year.
