Would be brilliant if we could get an interview of that quality once a week.
How good to actually hear an interview where you hear names like Gould and Sheldrick being asked about instead of Buddy!

Amazing what happens when an interviewer can name more than half a dozen Swans players out of a line-up!

I actually think differently about some players now
  • Sheldrick needs better handball disposal and better tank but is just being held out by a very capable midfield
  • Roberts is very versatile with the capability to play inside, outside, half forward, halfback, very smart footballer
  • Gould is ready and playing at the required level and missed out only due to the stability of our back six
  • etc

Exciting for them, but the Clarke/Sheldrick/Wicks/Konstanty battle for spots that I was really looking forward to has fizzled due to injuries. Bit of a bummer.

Sheather, Rowy, Roberts and even Corey are in contention

If the suggestion is that Roberts, Corey, Sheather and Warner are in contention to play the role being contested by Clarke/Wicks/Konstanty/Sheldrick then it's a ridiculous suggestion. Corey is being groomed as a winger and wasn't getting game time in that practice match. Roberts is a mid and they haven't been trialling him in the forwards that I have noticed. Sheather is still rehabbing his injuries.

BRISBANE V SYDNEY – MATCH SIM REVIEW

HB MEYERS·FEBRUARY 25, 2023
AFL SEASON 2023
A powerful run of five straight goal in the third term gave the Brisbane Lions enough separation to score a win in their match sim over the Swans, but it was the way the Lions were able to squeeze their opposition and deny them the corridor that will please most Lions fans.
Though many consider these games to be meaningless, there were plenty of take aways for both sides as they tried a few different lineups and had some interesting debuts to keep an eye on.
As always, The Mongrel covers the ins, outs, and points of interest.

We have a ruck crisis

David King has lost his damn mind.

  • Basically says our current mids aren't good enough
  • Thinks Roberts and Sheldrick are the solutions
  • Yet somehow thinks we can still win it this year or next ????

I’m kinda with King on this one - he stated that clearances are a big problem (especially centre bounces) & our current mid group isn’t getting it done.

Hard to argue that particular statement.

Whether Roberts and Sheldrick are the answer is obviously debatable - but I think King’s point that we need to find a way to address the problem is fair enough.

It's not debatable at all. Two players with a combined two games of experience are not going to improve our clearances at all.

His argument just makes no sense. He says the current "magnets" aren't working so the next generation need to come through. But Rowbottom and Warner are that next generation, they're only 22 and 21. If he thinks they've hit their peaks he's got sawdust for brains. Meanwhile Mills and Papley he cites as the 26 year old All Australians who are our best players now, but aren't they some of the "magnets" that aren't working? He cites Warner as one of our most damaging players, but again, he spent more time as a "magnet" in our midfield last year than anyone besides Parker.

So he's just contradicted himself in about half a dozen ways. Talking with lots of words doesn't always mean you're saying much.

I feel we struggled a bit in that area last season. We finished the year strongly with our mids playing at full intensity every week. But I am not sure how sustainable that is. At the end Mills and Rowbottom seemed exhausted. I don't mind seeing if we can rotate some new players through midfield.

Also trying different combinations at centre bounces. Eg I don't think Warner is that great in there. He can win it and do something brilliant but also leave us exposed defensively.

I do love a good debate!

JPK left a void - and I think King is querying whether the current crop contain a clearance player that will fill that void.

My view - Rowbottom could, maybe. But I don’t really see Chad, Mills, Stephens or Errol as candidates. They have other strengths. Parker is, in horse racing parlance, “fully exposed” - he’s probably not the answer either.

The ruck is part of the problem. But I think it’s fair to express a view that our clearance work needs to improve and our current crop of mids might need to supplemented with a clearance beast.

King wants Sheldrick and Roberts given a run to see what they can do. They’re not the answer (yet), but I think his point is valid - giving second year players some senior exposure is often sound policy.

Absolutely it is, but when the "clearance beast" you're offering up are two players who have played 1 game, whilst simultaneously contradicting all the other arguments you're making, then you're just talking nonsense.

King is, not you DQ.

It just astounds me that people look at our midfield and actually think, "Hey! You know what they need? Even more youth!"

My wife tells me I talk nonsense on a regular basis. So maybe I am!

But the nightmare of us being absolutely obliterated in clearances by Geelong just won’t fade.

Did anyone listen to Parker interview 2 weeks ago? (its on the Swans website Official AFL Website of the Sydney Swans Football Club. All the latest news, videos, results and information.). He said (para phrasing), numbers of stoppages are going down and the game is turning into a transition and turnover game.. so the Swans game plan will follow.

A lot of talk about needing a 'clearance king'.. been a lot of talk over the last few years about needing to draft/trade a big bodied inside mid to be such a player. While praising Beatson and Dalrymple over the last few years for their picking of bolters.. has anyone stopped to look at the type of player they're drafting? Are they a step ahead in drafting players (with pace, endurance, kicking skills over Braun) for where the game is heading as opposed to where the game used to be?
I reckon the game is changing in ways that us fans cant quite keep up with, cant quite see..
Interesting that last year a team with a midfield of two very young and relatively small (rowbum, Warner) midfielders + Mills (brilliant but not a 'big body') + Parker (experienced and tough but only 183cm and 88kg - hardly a 'big bodied' clearance beast) finished 2nd! Dont forget Collingwood, who finished 18th in clearances over the last 8 rounds also finished very high up the ladder

Im backing our midfield of Warner, Rowbum, Mills & Parker.. add the outside/inside/'transition' players like Gulden, Stephens, JMac (Campbell, and all the others pushing for selection) to take us to the finals again.
