Once again you’re in fairy tale land where everybody is rational and hugs all round.

Again fight the good fight for how to be the perfect supporter or the respectful “smart” supporter.

Leigh Matthews started the Goodes hate with his “protected species” comments. Don’t throw his words of wisdom at me as that’s pointless.

Not a single attempt to take the higher moral ground will stop me being emotive after a loss. And as I’ve said many times my history of it is pretty mild.

You’re my hero though so smart so respectful the swans are lucky to have you flying the flag.

Cheers, mate. Here’s to our best season yet, with minimal need for venting :)

With the new season just over a month away, each club is sure to have their list of targets slowly coming together as they plan to scout out-of-contract names across the course of the year.
With this list, we name the one off-contract player your club should be keeping a close eye on in 2023.

According to the article other teams should be keeping a 'close eye' on players such as Tom De Koning, Harry Himmelberg, Harrison Jones, Mitch Georgiades, Tom Doedee & Ben Mckay. We apparently should be focusing our attention on a 20yo 2 game fwd/ruck, who has yet to register a score at senior level. :confusedv1:

Shannon Neale

Already home to a handful of Western Australia's best young names, the Swans could add to their WA links with the addition of Neale.
A move to the Harbour City would see the burgeoning ruck-forward Cat slot beside ex-teammate Logan McDonald in Sydney's attack, while also relieving Sydney's first-string ruckman in splitting the hit-out duties.
The Swans are in need of further key forward options given Lance Franklin's nearing retirement, with McDonald soon becoming the club's go-to target.
What Neale can offer, at a bargain price, will aid John Longmire's key-position options as a tall forward target that can pinch-hit in the ruck.
Now I realise it stipulates out of contract and mentions only one player per club but I'd be sort of hoping that we are aiming a bit higher.

PS Article also suggests Richmond should target Hayden McLean.

I know bugger all about Neale.. could be a good player?
At the end of the season, its likely we're left with McDonald, McLean & Amartey.. (maybe Francis or Paddy can move to the forward line? doubtful)
Thats 3 young and/or inexperienced tall forwards. I would think we would chase someone older / more experienced to support McDonald.
Thoughts on Himmelberg anybody?

Draft profile of Neale;
He was primarily viewed as a ruck pre-draft but it appears that Geelong are developing him as a fwd, who can give a chop out in the ruck.

As for Himmelberg I thought he looked much better when he was moved down back.
But Adam Kingsley, the new GWS coach, has said he'll play fwd this season, so what do I know.

I think we have a greater need for 'replacement' fwds than we do down back, so it will be interesting if HH can hold down a fwd spot this season.
IMO he'd need to improve up fwd if we were to put him on the radar.

I reckon hes a good (not great) player that doesn't get injured (which is huge after Reid and Amartey experience). Its his age and experience that i like. I reckon he could offer good support for a still developing McDonald. As younger players, I dont mind Gorgiades, Riccardi or the sound of Neale, but I dont think they would take the best defender away from Logan.
All four are probably affordable and gettable.. interesting to see what happens

I am massively bullish on Neale. I thought he was a really quality junior who, most importantly, had plenty of raw talent, suggesting plenty of upside.

That said, I can't see Geelong letting him go and it seems they can keep whoever they want.

Himmelberg is a pretty good player seemingly not fitting GWS plans. It’s probably unlikely though that a player of his calibre moves sideways to the Swans. Can see him leaving Sydney if he goes.

They Sydney coastline is seen by most (especially real estates)as an upward move from Sydney West
Moving from GWS to a team likely to compete in the finals for the foreseeable future is also an upward move.
Reckon the Swans would be a pretty attractive destination
but yep, who know where he wants to play

Truly clown shit. We don't know if we need a ruckman yet, and if Ladhams bombs again I'd much rather a 1 year rental stopgap veteran like Goldy or Nic Nat than a youngster like Neale. Same goes for key forwards, albeit I think McDonald and McLean can work as a tandem with no need for a 3rd KPF so recruiting a vet could just **** things up

Also Richmond can **** off an die thanks

I’m probably basing it off a history of not really trading off GWS guess it has to change one day but for now it’s usually the big Vic clubs that attract the bigger names from the expansion clubs.

A Mongrel Punt article on Parker
here's half - the other half is for Mongrel members

THE LUKE PARKER BLOODS LEGACY

HB MEYERS·FEBRUARY 8, 2023
AFL SEASON 2023
If I asked you to name the best midfielders of the last ten-or-so years, who would you nominate?
Patrick Dangerfield – of course. Dustin Martin – yep again. Nat Fyfe would be in there. Patrick Cripps? Bont?
Where would you rate Luke Parker?
Though he has only made the All-Australian team once (I couldn’t believe that when I looked it up), he has three Bob Skilton Medals to his name and one of the more consistent performers of the past decade, never dipping below 23 touches per game over the last nine seasons and averaging over a goal per game the one year that he did drop to 23 touches on average.
He has been the Swans captain, a dual Robert Rose Medal winner as the league’s most courageous player, and has five Brett Kirk Medals as the best player in the Sydney Derby. That last one is quite amazing – he has won four of the last five medals awarded in the cross town clash.
Yet, given all those accolades, he is rarely in the conversation when it comes to that list of best midfielders.
Why?
And does he need to be considered as such when he is building a legacy of his own? And continuing another?

Uh oh… standalone content for our Swans members…. because I like them. Actually, I don’t mind all of you, this one just happens to be for them, though. And maybe you as well, if you like Luke Parker. Want to join us?

Put simply, the only time he was definitely the best midfielder on his team was when we finished 15th and 16th
Explains why he won his first B&F in 2014 when we played in a GF...

An aside part of this article is the Swans had the 2nd lowest injury rate last year.

You can win a B&F and not be a clear standout. That team had Hannebery and Kennedy, are you gonna tell me Parker was for certain the best midfielder on the team at that time?

Enjoyable read.

Article about Buddy's upcoming season and a bit on Konstanty and selecting young players;

On Franklin;
"He's a bit of a different personality, isn't he? He's a bit more low-key. He's not going to be seeking the attention. Something tells me that he'll probably be the opposite end of the scale," Swans coach John Longmire told AFL.com.au.

"We were talking to him before Christmas and he's in the best space he's ever been. He loves playing with younger players. He loves seeing young players come through. He smells talent and he identifies it pretty quickly. He knows when kids can and can't play.

"He walks into this building like I did the other day. He just comes up to me with a smile and says, 'how good is this joint?' For a player that's been around for a long time, I'm pretty sure that Lance won't be out seeking too many headlines this year."

On Jacob (and Paps);
"It does put a smile on my face to see the two of them, Jacob and Tom, buzzing around," he said. "It's actually quite interesting. Jacob rang Tom the year before, just asking him for some tips. He obviously came from a similar area and they're similar players.

"As soon as we drafted Jacob, Tom text me and was really excited. He's been fantastic. Everything he is, he's that. But he's also got a bit of class. He's not just a hard chaser. That stood out to our playing group in the first session, he's actually got some class.

"The two of them buzz around together. I grabbed both of them together last week and put my arm around them and said, 'geez it's good to see you two working together'. It's really good."

Selecting youth;
"Sometimes I probably err on selecting players a bit early," Longmire laughed.

"Nothing excites me more as a coach than seeing young players come in. I love it. When they first turn up, I can't wait to see what they're like off the field and with their family and how they play.

"Hopefully, those young players – whether they're played or not – they look around and realise that it doesn't matter how old you are. If you're having a go and preparing really well and training really well and competing, you'll play. It doesn't matter how old you are.

Good man that Longmire. :)

Yes. It's why Clarkson put a hard tag on him with Langdon (iirc, can't remember his name) and the midfield completely shut down

Thanks for the post hairy biker

I think we can all settle down for the year knowing that as Buddy edges closer to final retirement we're going to receive a plethora of articles on his contribution & influence on the game. All very well deserved.

Yeah McInerney and Roberts can tell you all about that lmao
Roberts' debut wasn't too bad, given he'd had a solid run of reserves form leading up to it.

But McInerney's selection was so funny cause almost no one thought he should be playing at senior level off one solid reserves game. But we all thought OK, Horse must know what he's doing, this is exciting.

Then after the game we were like ohhh yeah Horse ****ed up there :tearsofjoy:

SYDNEY
2023 LEADERS
TBC. Sydney’s three co-captains last year Luke Parker, Callum Mills and Dane Rampe are all expected to be in the leadership frame again this year.

INJURY LIST
Ryan Clarke (hamstring) — Three weeks
Hayden McLean (quad) — Two weeks
Joel Amartey (hamstring) — Two weeks

PRE-SEASON FLYERS
Two of the Swans’ draftees have made a strong impression over the pre-season since arriving at the club. Small forward Jacob Konstanty and midfielder Caleb Mitchell have caught the eye with Rampe declaring the duo had made an “immediate impact”.

PRE-SEASON MATCHES
Match simulation — Sydney Swans v Brisbane Lions, Tramway Oval, Friday, February 24, 12pm.
Practice match — Sydney Swans v Carlton, Blacktown International Sports Park, Friday March 3, 7.10pm.

ROUND ONE
Gold Coast Suns v Sydney Swans, Metricon Stadium, March 18, 8pm.

We've had a very good run with soft tissue issues since Raper & Inness arrived but have had a few this pre-season, including Franklin & Reid with the old athletes curse of dodgy calves.
Hopefully we've got the injuries out the way pre-season.
