that last deal is a steal imo and not one i can see the Dogs doing
i think they'd want 9 and F1 and we'd push for the Lions 1st back (potential for Reid there)

need to sort out the defence too. Hack kicks into the F50 only work for the other team's defence

So the issue is the same as it was if he left but we get a top 5 clearance midfielder in the AFL as a throw in?

Still need something different. Powerful explosive bloke we can throw in the middle that can win a clearance by smashing straight though the front . Caldwell is not that guy . In fact I think he becomes the casualty with Parish staying and will have to settle for more of a forward role. Hobbs will be okay in and under but he does not offer the same as Dangerfield / Cripps / DeGoey . Stringer did for a while but has too many injuries . Perkins is simply not a clearance player. Setterfield does a good job with the blocking for sure but we need a dynamic clearance player.

We have **** all players who play to be in the contest. That want to play like Hobbs does. Then there is also contested marking.
Yes we need another decent KPF and a quick pressure forward that can kick goals but we simply need to sort out our limited number of real hard edge players.
And Bryan is not a physical player. He does not seek out a contest. He goes for his marks and always has a crack in the ruck but he does not put the fear of god into the opposition. The area he has to find in is physical strength and playing a bit more angry . Draper needs to forget the rock star shit and the podcasts and get back to having the physical impact he had when he first came in the side and stop running around trying to do the flashy shit all the time.

No . We do not currently have the leadership or culture to be bringing in projects that have a lot going on off field.

Yeah, Dangerfield / Cripps / DeGoey certainly have that explosive pace and tough ball getting ability. Also penetrating kick. I think we try and use Parish to get it to a shiel type but it fails if the opp clearance player is the type you mentioned. Tom Green is emerging well too.

Burst speed at the ball, as you say, would definitely combine well what we have, and probably the missing piece. When Stringer was up and about, it made a huge difference.

Hopefully addressed. Even a Butters type, with manic pressure & ball getting ability, would be handy if there are no bigger options available.

Re Draper, one thing he needs to do less of is grabbing the ball and trying for goal of the year all the time.

Agree with a lot of that. With Bryan, what i saw in his two games was a lanky kid still developing his frame but not letting that stop him go in and crash into a contest. He may not strike fear, but that doesn't stop him going in anyway. completely agree on Draper too. His spotlight from Gather Round went to his head.

on the "beast' side of things, i think we need to move away from copying what others have.
lions don't have Danger type. nor do Port.
Cripps is a different type for me & i don't see anyone at GWS or St Kilda that fits that profile.
We need our brand of grunt. Hobbs is a great example and just needs to tidy up a few bits to his game.

I like Caldwell as a Brayshaw type. run and compete all day. Crash in despite size. Wear the hits

the contested marking is a good call out. And it's something we have around the midfield but not really in it
Perkins, langford, Caldwell and Durham are the 4 i see really hitting aerial contests with strength and intent.
Outside Langford though, the other 3 are still developing.

A little off the Parish topic, but i think Darcy is an important part of a mix we're still getting right.

Yes, however I would counter that with the fact that he's played 87 games for us and all we need to do is give him 13 games as sub (maybe on field for game 100 for us and game 150 in total) to get his kids in play for us.

Bailey Smith is a bloke that intrigues me. Is he a guy that could step up a level or two with more responsibility to be "the guy"? If he can that would be awesome, ala Tom Mitchell or is he simply another Brent Prismall?
 
I think competitiveness is a quality that is more about team culture than anything else.

When the standard is set and that’s the expectation it tends to work out. Essendon currently doesn’t have that standard, but it’s improved a lot this year due to captain Zac

What Essendon needs is more midsize players who can play most parts of the ground, take a mark and kick accurately.
 
Thought when Scott got the job he needed 4/5 years to do first part of the job. Turn list over, improve the recruiting and development areas and change the culture. Sadly, all this needs to be done before we become a serious team. Let’s be honest for the better part of 15 years we have been at best limping into finals or at worse a 13/15 finishing. I think we have to be realistic, other than Eagles our list I think is the second worse. Think hawks are in front and suspect Roos will soon be. Roos have compiled a lot of elite/top end talent , and will continue to this draft period.Now, will the management have the balls to see this through. Personally , I can live with 2/3 years of bottom 4 finishes and trust in that time Scott changes the DNA of the club.

We aren't going to do that, we will build on top of what we have and hope some of our kids stop getting injured and turn into the guys we hoped when we picked em.

There would be nothing worse than finishing 10th next season with a very similar 22 that played this year.

I pray for Jones, Reid, Cox, Tsatas, Davey and Baldwin to push in and play a lot, at a good AFL standard, if those blokes become best 22, finishing 10th is more than welcome.
