We have Wright, Weideman, Jones and Hunter as KPFs.

We have Martin and Durham who play wing.
After Wright that is a sad list. Considering at the start of the year, we were playing 2.

Wing: As I said earlier, Cox and Wanganeen. Langford has played there. Tsatas or Shiel could spend some time there as well, even D'Ambrosio. This list may be stretching it a bit, but you included Weideman (defender), Jones (permanently injured) and Hunter (not yet signed and played 1.5 VFL games).

I think at the end of the day we have MANY holes in the list. I doubt you'll change my mind regarding the wing. That's OK, we seem to agree on most of the other holes.

I tend to agree that we just can't just fit more talls onto the list.

My guide for how many spots on a list to allocate to certain types of players is making 2 full teams (I.e. an AFL team and a VFL team).

That means 12 is the maximum number of list spots I'd want as dedicated to talls. There are some players who will cross over, with ruck or on flanks.

By my count we have 14 players who are used as talls: Wright, Reid, Cox, Stewart, Hayes, McBride, Hunter, Weidemann, Jones, BZT, Ridley, Voss, Baldwin and Laverde.

Even if you think Laverde or Cox might be better suited to other roles, to add players to that mix means finding these existing talls other roles.

Delisting Stewart and McBride brings us down to 12. BZT will make it 11, seemingly to be replaced by McKay which brings us back to 12.

If we want more talls, and we probably should because the forward options are not great, we need to move guys from this group on. This also happens to be a draft that seems pretty heavy on tall talent.

If it we're up to me I'd take up an interest in Baldwin. I wouldn't delist Voss but he's not a tall as far as I'm concerned, he's a big flanker. If Scott sees him as a tall then move him on.

We need a key forward option that is more compelling than what we currently have. I like the total package offered by Archer Reid.

I like A.Reid too.

I’d keep Baldwin and delist Voss.

Yep, basically my thoughts as well but I limit it to the 18 named players and use the interchange roles as utilities/can be anything.

I go

4 KPB - Reid, Laverde, Cox and Baldwin
8 Back Flankers - McGrath, Ridley, Redman, Hind, Kelly, Heppell and D'Ambrossio (Need 1)
4 wings - Martin and Durham, (Need 2)
8 pure midfielders - Merrett, Caldwell, Hobbs, Parish, Setterfield, Shiel and Tsatas (Need 1)
8 Forward Flankers - Davey, Davey Jr, Guelfi, Langforad, Perkins, Stringer, Menzie and Wanganeen
4 KPF - Wright, Jones, Weideman and Hunter
4 Rucks. - Draper and Bryan (Need 2)

Now some of that depth is pretty ordinary so I am not saying just roll with that but we do need to add more to certain spots. So for example if we lose Weideman then we need to bring another in. Or if we bring one in it allows us to shift Weideman out or into another role.

Hayes?

Shaping up a rd1 '24 side.....

Baldwin* - McKay - McGrath
Redman - Cox - Ridley
Durham - Setterfield - Martin
Perkins - Langford - Gresham
Menzie - Wright - Stringer
Draper - Parish - Merrett
Caldwell - Hobbs - Heppell - Goldstein
Shiel

If that team had to play finals this week (yes, prelim week), you'd be nervous on a few fronts
1-Cox @ CHB. Hasn't had the exposure. Need to pump games in there.
2-Wing depth. 2 great runners, but no one else really to take the role up via rotations
3-Fwd line pressure - it's better with Gresham in there, but Stringer + Wright + Perkins is not great. Would want 8 goals from those 3 alone to make up for it.

Things i do like;
That backline is balanced. Far more than we've had in a loooong time.
Good mix of mids.
Some experienced heads

*Baldwin like a new addition as we haven't seen him for lengthy periods in the back 6.

We really need Baldwin to out-train Laverde this off-season. I don't see Scott just giving Baldwin a pass in.

Does look much better back there, though I'd swap Baldwin and Cox, and maybe even then, Laverde in and Cox out. Cox was piss weak mostly, though understandable coming from a long way back.

id give Cox the chance, before Hayes or reid step up.

Agree on Lav v Baldwin too.

McKay is not a certainty. If we miss out the backline will look pretty rough.
I read that supposedly someone has offered him a 7 year contract. Don't know if that's true or not, but it sounds like the sort of thing Sydney would do. He'd have to be tempted by that even if he doesn't want to move interstate.

more looking at roles

last line, stay at home defenders - baldwin, mckay, mcgrath
higher line, rebound defenders - redman, ridley, cox
Defensive players still need to roam up the ground to shut down their players.

Cox’s performance this season has me worried he is not up to AFL standard. Skills folded under pressure, no physicality and short stepped it too much. I hope he proves me wrong, but he has a long way to go. He will have to train the house down over summer as I can‘t see Scott putting up with his softness at all.

Can not disagree with what you said about his form this year. Pretty much how I saw it. The little plus is he has not gone away this year and is training trough the break.

Has the year to grab hold of a spot for mine. If he doesnt take it, get ruthless.

Collingwood shipped a pick 4 rising star winner out and went on to 2 prelims.
Pick can't determine our patience

if Dodo stuffs the McKay deal 2024 will be another wasted year
2024 is going to be the same as this year anyway if he does or does not come .
