Tenace v Stanton v Butler v Raines.

Which medium midfielder/flanker would you take from this quartet drafted in the 2003 draft?

Stanton is one of the hardest working young midfielders in the competition, Raines was one of the favourites for the rising star award last year and Butler is a premiership player despite having a lot of injuries to date.

Tenace is fast but he can't kick and they passed on a lot of good players so they could draft this pretty average footballer. The Cats could have drafted young gun suchs as Mundy, Butler, Stanton and Waters instead of Tenace. But the Cats like drafting unaccountable types such as Djerrkurra, Varcoe, Selwood, Kelly, Johnson and Gardiner just to add skill or pace to an average midfield and side.
I'll admit drafting Tenace was a mistake, but it wasn't a deep draft, and you expect a few draft mistakes from time to time.

The thing I like about this though, is your team drafted ANDREW WALKER. We picked a dud, with a few good players still left. You picked a dud with the number 2 pick, and the best player of that draft (McLean) was still availible.

You also know abaolutely nothing about Djekurra, to say his unaccountable just seems like an uneducated man trying to assume that because he is aboriginal he must be flashy and inconsistant. Selwood had played one game, Gardiner and Johnson are forwards, and Kelly's game will pick up when he gets his head right.

Raines seems like a very overglorified halfback flanker to me. I think butler has much room for improvement and could over take stants but in careers to date stants easyily the most consistant and well performed

U idiot Flint! Why start a thread and just pot Geelong. Big call on Selwood too. How can you say that? Bit early I reckon. 1 NAB Cup game between them and already making judgementsAll the guys you mention would easily get a game at the blues. Look in your own backyard before you start canning our blokes. :)
Reminds me of all those Pussy supporters taking pot shots at Bryce Gibbs after one game and making stupid threads like Selwood>>>Gibbs.

Butler from Stanton and Raines. [why is Tenace in this?]

Butler walked into the best midfield in the competition [by miles at that] after missing the first 12 round with injuries

If you really think Walker is a dud and Mclean was the best player taken in that draft, then you should quit whilst you're behind.

Take a look at the rhetoric dished out by delusional Cats fans who think Selwood is a better footballer than Gibbs.

Has Selwood learnt to kick?

Tenace wouldn't get a game ahead of Simpson at Carlton in a month of Sundays. :)

Tall runners such as Grigg, Anderson, Walker, Russell and Benjamin with pace to burn are better options than gutless shorties like Tenace in the modern game.

Did the media call Tenace blackjack because he folds at the slightest hint of pressure?

Wow, someone is bitter. I think you'll find the post you've quoted actually comments that it is too early to make any comparison between the two kids. Time to eat humble pie, I'll get you a spoon...

You said Djekurra was unaccountable, yet you base that on nothing, and if you knew anything about the man, or you'd seen him play, you'd know nothing could be further from the truth.

My point was, that because of aboriginal players such as Sampi, Tambling, Cole and others, people often assume aboriginal players are unaccountable and inconsistant, and you can deny it all you want, but the only reason you said the same thing about Djekurra was because he is aboriginal...

Or your an idiot who just has absolutely no ********ing idea.

which is it?

EASILY STANTON!

Raines is overrated
Raines style of play:

Raines first AFL goal (a beauty!)

?? Tambling has had games with 5 and 6 tackles so a bit harsh to say he's completely unaccountable.

About the "Aboriginal players are unaccountable" that is pure crap IMO (like you said) because Andrew Krakouer was 2nd in the AFL for tackles one year IIRC and is consistently one of the top tacklers in the league.

Do you no anything about half of those players. Djerjurra has played all of 4 games (practice matches), Selwood played his first game on the w/e 19 touches and as far as im concerned showed great defensiveness. Varcoe while may be un accountable, opposition teams would be silly to let him run loose. Same with Johnno.

Stanton is a very underrated player, well he is now that some of the bomber nuff nuffs have stopped trying to say he's better than McLean. He carry's the ball very well and gets lots of it.

Stanton then Butler/Raines, then Tenace.

You seem to have started this for no better reason than to have a go at Kane Tenace. He's hardly high profile. What on earth has he done to you?
Nothing, besides being a very average player who will probably struggle to get a game for the Cats and carve out a career. The last time I checked the thread on the Cats board agreed with this poll.

No. You've got something against him and it seems personal. Why should you care if he struggles to get a game? He doesn't play for you. Why start a thread?

Im actually a stanton fan, i havent seen that much of Raines play, but from what i have seen he certainly has a future in the game.

Stanton
Raines
Butler
And dare i say it Tenace, cant believe we had a chance to take Mundy and we took this hack, worst blunder of the draft.
The Dockers didn't even rate Mundy that highly; they had already taken Ryley Dunn at #10; a player who has managed AFL selection 4 times in 3 seasons. A team can't boast or be applauded for their later selections when they have made mistakes with their earlier choices. I, as a cat fan, am not overly proud of Geelong's 1999 draft selections (Chapman at #31, Ling at #38 and Enright at #47) when Geelong also took Ezra Bray at #17 who never played senior football.

Kane Tenace may be viewed as a draft bust, but FFS he is hardly a contender for the Inept Drafting Hall of Fame. IIRC Geelong were actually super keen to get Kepler Bradley and were shattered to miss him by having a selection just one spot too late. They have both been very disappointing and so Geelong would have been in trouble either way. Yet IIRC Geelong wasn't doing anything radical by taking Tenace (or seeking Bradley) so I think criticism of the GFC is a little lame when Geelong did just as almost every other team would have done if they were in the same position.

Also considereing how Kepler Bradley is developing:

Kepler Bradley. He lacks so much awareness he wouldn't even know he was on a footy field if it weren't for the umpire signalling frees against him.
FFS, Tenace wasn't even taken top 5 and he has played 44 senior games. Riley Dunn at #10 has played 4 games and accumulated 15 disposals in total; Tenace has managed to gather more disposals in one game than Dunn has in his entire career on many occasions. Luke Molan in 2001 was taken at #9 by Melbourne and he never even made the senior team (to be fair, he was constantly injured).

Choosing to use Tenace at #7 in 2003 as an example of a horrible recruiting decision is just strange. He was in the senior team at the end of last season (was injured and so missed R22 IIRC). If he never makes the seniors again that will leave him with 44 games and that is 43 more than Danny Roach managed for Collingwood after also being taken at #7 (in 1999). Or 42 more senior games than Leigh Brockman could contribute to Geelong after being taken at #8 in 1996.

It's also a little ironic that Tenace's best ever disposal total was in his last game against Carlton. That Kane Tenace sure does suck - even though the last time he played my team he had 21 touches, many more than most of my team's players could gather. He's an awful footballer but my team let him pick up more possessions than he ever has before or since.

This is quite a peculiar type of troll: dissing a player for being inept when you are the supporter of the one team that probably should be the least vocal on this issue.;)

FYI his surname is pronounced teh-narchie not teh-nays. It's Italian. :)

Like the pronunciation of Liberace.:D
