THE 2023 FREE KICK LADDER - ROUND 4

Best/worst differentials

Collingwood sits atop the free kick ladder with a differential of +18, two clear of Melbourne (+16), with Brisbane and Carlton (+15), and Fremantle (+13) making up the top five.
At the other end of the scale is Port Adelaide with a massive -35 differential. They are worse off than the Western Bulldogs (-16), with Adelaide (-14), North Melbourne (-11) and West Coast (-7) making up the bottom five.
Perennial free kick ladder cellar dweller Richmond is next with (-6), alongside Hawthorn (-6).

Most/least frees for

The Dockers have been awarded the most frees with 102, ahead of the Magpies (100), Lions (88), Blues (87) and Kangaroos (84).
Essendon has received the least amount of free kicks with 63, fewer than GWS (64), the Bulldogs (71), Hawthorn (72) and Gold Coast (73).

Most/least frees against

The Power have given away the most free kicks so far in 2023 at 113, more than 28 per game. Next is the Kangaroos (95), Adelaide (93) Fremantle (89) and the Dogs (87).
The fewest frees against lives with the Bombers at a paltry 61, clear of the Giants (62), Demons (63), Suns (65) and Blues (72).

Quality over Quantity

1 free infront of goal = 5 on the wing

Agree!

Naughton slips and gets a free = goal. Doggie's player wasn't taken high by Vlsutuin = goal.
Two of their 3 goals in the last qtr were by frees. They received 4 goals by frees inc the 50-meter penalty against Graham.

We didn't get any freebie goals from frees, this is massive when a team wins by 5 pts but got gifted 4 goals by the umps

Afrer round 9, Richmond has entered an alternative universe where it now has received 2 more free kicks this year than it has given away.

However, by adding on the 50m penalties, it's still in negative territory, so we can all relax...
Are we actually +2 now? Wow, we’re definitely in alternate dimension. I can’t remember the last time we had a positive differential where free kicks are concerned.

AFL want us to win more games so they can make money

I honestly think playing to not give away free kicks has affected our style.

Hardwick has actually said this year that the club has put a huge emphasis on not giving away free kicks. It could potentially be a negative!

Which player has received the most free kicks for Richmond ?
Grimes has received 14 and given away 7, Hopper is 13 and 9 - they're our best two.

Baker, Bolton, and Pickett have given away the most, 12 / 11 / 11, respectively.

We have given away the equal most 50m penalties in 11 along with Norf, Port, and St Kilda.

Have a look at this exercise I did recently. It measures the difference between the Richmond & Collingwood in terms of free kick differential since the start of 2017. It's horrific reading by the way.

2017 Rich -59 Coll +45 (diff -106)
2018 Rich -122 Coll +111 (diff -233)
2019 Rich -31 Coll +89 (diff -120)
2020 Rich -70 Coll +73 (diff -143)
2021 Rich -86 Coll -15 (diff -71)
2022 Rich -68 Coll +41 (diff -109)
2023 Rich -59 Coll +43 (diff -102)

This is a total differential of -884 free kicks in 7 seasons, an average of -126 per season.
Not only that, we did not have a single season where our differential was a positive, compared to the filth.

Never seen a club get kissed on the dick as much as the filth do, its sickening.
