We have 1 cat A rookie list left. Any additional rookies will need to replace an LTI or retirement.

The inability to adjust our strategy based on the moves of other clubs was my main takeaway of the draft. We could have drafted Addinsall.

It wouldn't surprise me if a few of the kids still on the board are rated by us, but because of a locked in can't adjust under any circumstances plan to bring in a has been, we won't grab them.

One of my only criticisms of our drafting is if we really wanted Addinsall we needed to bid Gold coast 1 and 2.
It is however a bad look if we didn't pick Duursma at pick one.
The fact that everyone knew at what point we would bid meant that Gold Coast could adjust and trade to get points.
Moving up and burning a future second just made it worse.

If we don't take anyone today or as a train on, then we have an MSD spot, yes.

Gold Coast (top 6): 4 academy players in the top 20 then a kid from Tassie at 28.

West Coast (last, historically bad): 3 players from the Talent League in the top 20, Allen (Talent League) at 29 then Williams as an NGA player at 39. Miss out on Banfield F/S at 41.

Yeah list spots are a consideration but the whole system just stinks. There was one player taken from the WAFL in the top 36, i.e. two rounds of a proper draft. But we need to "grow the game".

We were never gonna bid 1 - important for whoever we drafted to get the medal / bonus / status etc.

But we should have bid on both at 2, then the Carlton bid.

Here's what I don't understand.

This is particularly addressed to the likes of Eastern Rangers and Dylan82 -- good judges, manifestly furious at the moment, despite being usually pretty understated (or maybe resigned) in tone.

I'm all for completely rebuking the club; I think we're more or less incompetent at talent identification and the drafting team still more or less needs a wholesale clean-out. Haven't been happy with the past two drafts in general.

But why did the outbursts come precisely last night and not earlier? I checked out of this end of the draft pretty early this year, so don't have a firm opinion on Evans or Banfield. But from the moment we didn't leave enough list spots open, wasn't this basically bound to happen? It's no good to say 'well there was the hope they slipped through', since if they were quality enough to warrant this reaction, that obviously wasn't going to happen.

The crucial evaluations and actions requiring condemnation were made earlier in the piece, not last night.

Which also just means this is a talent ID and recruiting team fault, not a list management one per se. If (eg) Evans is a top 20 prospect, or in any case a midfield prospect definitely worth taking, the draft team should have identified that and in turn we presumably would have engineered the space. So people should probably stop entirely demonising Clarke and direct their ire to Massey et al.

I think we rated Evans and Banfield but took a calculated punt when we took Allen that they would slide to rookie draft, instead of trading back. It turned out to be a punt that didnt pay off. I would be prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt but its just typical of the judgment calls that we get wrong time and time again.
