I think he's just a pig headed old prick and would of been the same no matter what club he may have coachedWhy would Thomas have angst towards Carlton?
His thoughts on Malthouse would be interesting, but he wasn't exactly treated poorly in his time at the club.

Daisy seemingly has a lot of affection towards Carlton. He has said that Malthouse was like a dad to him - not unusual (and not ideal) for a leader to have a positive relationship with some people and not with others so I don't think anything Daisy says would override any accounts from anyone else.

I dunno r uam I going to that game? am I?
Just saw this on Youtube. Never seen this footage before. Saved off an old VHS, really the only way anything new from this decade will be seen.
Ken Hunter, what a player. Was good to see Peter Motley run around too.ken hunter had four goals (no behinds) by the first few minutes of that footage. Noticed on his fourth goal he did not take much of a run up but still kicked it ~50+ m.
The game has gone backwards since those days - look at the skills on display in that video FMD - no one from the teams we have today would make that side back then - all hacks in comparison.
Conversely, the teams from today are taller, stronger and would run for much, much longer. Depending on the ruleset - modern rules versus the rules at the time - it's easier to adapt back to umpires letting you get away with a bit and being better at their jobs than it is to umpires being pedantic as they are today. Modern teams would get belted around the ball early in terms, but teams from previous decades would get run off their feet by half time; there's also the fact that 2 on one wins most of the time regardless of the quality of the one unless you're allowed to concuss the person sitting in the hole. Modern rulesets don't let you concuss the person sitting in the hole, and the entire point of the 2 on one is to prevent your player getting to the balldrop anyway. You have literal decades of strategic thinking, and almost the entirety of strategic thinking at AFL level is defensive; how to stop your opponent getting the ball, how to stop them scoring without jeopardizing your own ability to score. The game has gone backwards since those days - look at the skills on display in that video FMD - no one from the teams we have today would make that side back then - all hacks in comparison.
I think that was the late 80s Hawks or the early 90s Eagles.Conversely, the teams from today are taller, stronger and would run for much, much longer. Just as much as no-one from the teams we have today would make that side (bullshit that Sam Walsh wouldn't make that team) so too would those blokes struggle to get a game now, as the priorities for selecting a team are different. You need to be a certain size; you need to be able to hit a certain speed; you need to be able to run for longer.
The game looked better due to the superior skills. Blame the person who worked out that the most skilled player in the world is worse at the game than the player whose skills are alright but can run 50% longer and is a good 10cm taller when the former is stuffed, and the coach who filled his team with them.
meh - umps have too much say in the outcome of games and that is mostly due to the fact that there are so many rules to 'interpret' it is too arbitrary too often.
Even Weiters? The game has gone backwards since those days - look at the skills on display in that video FMD - no one from the teams we have today would make that side back then - all hacks in comparison.
Even Weiters?
You might be right, there's a lot of good defenders in that side. Weiters could be better than Dorro, and surely Eddie would have beaten Bernie Evans. The sides were so good back then - they chucked SOS up to the forward line - and he is supposed to be the FB of the century....
the flying carpet is worth at least 4 of today's defenders all by himself...what a player - I've been looking at all these old Carlton games - since I never watched any of these blokes play...all I've seen is total crapola for 20 years since I became a member!
It is the way the defenders worked together as a unit that caught my eye ...were never rushed - they thought their way out of a situation so well...always there for each other too..and no half steppersYou might be right, there's a lot of good defenders in that side.
