On Murph,

The left arm weakness (not being able to do weight lifting) probably goes a fair way to explaining broken tackles. Hard to lay a good tackle when one arm can't go above your head and is probably less strong overall

He said he couldn't reach out to his left very much so it does explain a lot.

It's still on the club playing an injured player ahead of fit players, in doing so, judging that an injured Murphy is better than a fit youngster.

It does put to bed the notion of him being soft

Yeah, it is in this article as well.

To tell you the truth, I would have preferred Carrazzo too, but Judd should have kept it IMO.

Says a bit about the CFC at the time, we should have been grooming successors from the moment Judd walked in the door. Club-wide delusion buying into the 2011/12 media hype.

It was definitely Carrots. Mick thought he was the standout candidate but injured too often so went with Murphy who was seen as someone who could grow into the role. Was quoted on it previously.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Malthouse, I think he was kind of right when it came to the captaincy. Murphy wasn't really 'built' for the role. And Carrots would have been a superb captain if he hadn't just had triplets and his body hadn't begun to break down. But hard to see the wisdom in telling Murphy this, unless it was unavoidable.

Why? Because he doesn't yell or doesn't smash into opposition players.

The role is about so much more than that and guys like Cripps and Docherty rave about Murph as captain.

Whether he is right or not, is not really relevant. If a decision was made to groom a younger player into the captaincy role, his first action as a coach and leader of the club should have been to motivate and ensure Murph was put in the right position to succeed in the role. Rocking up to your incumbent captain and saying "you werent my first choice' would have been demoralising and a decent hit to a young player's confidence.

Really just goes to show that Malthouse was more concerned about letting people know he was right and getting his own way than fostering a winning culture at the club. What on earth was he thinking......

Murph confirmed everything I thought about the Malthouse era. No wonder we had a mini exodus.

The more you learn about that period, the more you see that it was a farcical appointment.

And sadly, there would have been many of us and I am embarrassed to admit I was one of them that would have been overjoyed at the appointment of Malthouse to our club because of his coaching record. Fast forward half a decade and you see that not only did we sack a good Carlton man but we hired the worst possible person for our club. Yuck.

I feel sad for good people like Murphy to have to go through so much crap in their career because the people in charge of club were so terrible for most of his career there. Incredible loyalty all things considered. He deserved so much better.

Yeh they rave about Murphy, but honestly I wouldn't be taking their recommendation on anything just yet. Neither of them have won shit and they haven't exhibited anything on-field leadership wise either.

Not commenting on his cancer battle as that is something completely different. He has been extremely brave throughout that. This was a purely football comment

Least you admit the delusional judgement of those times.
I admire that willingness to own it by you.
Classy stuff imo.
