I'm glad you're not our list manager.
Arguing about how fringe player X replacing fringe player Y one week will make all the difference, only to argue the next week that we need to bring back fringe player Y because fringe player X is no good gets pretty tiresome.

List hasn't changed a huge deal. More injuries than last year. Yet performances are night and day.

We spent 20 years arguing about fringe players. Voss comes in, says to hell with that, and genuinely instills a next man up mentality in the playing group. Don't matter if it's Weiters, Young, Durdin or Kemp, we've held up.

If that doesn't tell you that system, structure and work ethic trump personnel then you haven't been paying enough attention.

There's been numerous examples every year of fringe players playing well in top sides only to fade away to obscurity as the talent around them falls away.

Start with a good system. Add strong leadership. Add a hungry playing group determined to succeed. Add a core group (6-8) A-graders. Add solid players around them that enable the team to implement the system structurally. Add depth in key positions.

That's true but who you choose to be your fringe players and the traits they bring is still vitally important.

Damn you Thy!! Always asking the tough questions!

I can get pretty cynical about things sometimes, but even something as small as Jack Newnes slowing, reaching down and making sure the little bloke he was running next to was feeling safe, having a good time.

We've got a good bunch at the moment.

Another story in today's age about carlton having discussions with the afl about receiving compensation should Liam Jones play with another club next season. The story states that the blues "expect to have positive discussions with the league about what might be a fair return for losing a key player of his quality to retirement for circumstances that were beyond the clubs control ".

Current rules state that a retired player cannot play for 18 months but carlton are happy for that to be waived provided they receive compensation. Carlton do not intend to re-recruit Jones.

Jones should just be treated as an uncontracted player. Carlton can trade and if that doesn't work he goes into the draft. Carlton should get a 3rd rounder or an upgrade on 2nd rounder
It's more complicated than that.
If he had have played this year, he'd be a Free Agent (apparently Unrestricted, but I would have thought 500k would put you in the top 25% of salaries). Then there is the exclusion due to retirement. And that his value will be reduced, due to sitting out a year, and age.

It would be great if the AFL treated our situation with some sympathy, get say Band 4 compo (end of 2nd round). Even Band 5 would be a lot better than nothing.

See if the afl can come up with the same formula they used when they determined the compo for Jarrod Waite.

That Andy Maher / Gaze show on SEN does not work. So tedious. Just nonsense. Not humorous, not informative. Flounders in no man's land
what production meeting green lights talking about the sponsors donuts for 50 minutes? reminds me of the rex hunt circus before it was eventually shut down

That producer needs a good hard look at himself. You're right that show will be on the block end of the season. Maher needs to go. His dumbed down intensity regarding the most trivial of trivial is ear bleed sort of stuff.
