My old man was standing on a couple of beer cans as a kid watching from inside 50 right in front of where it happened.

It was out.

FOXFOOTY put the footage through their footy lab and gave it the full “Matrix” treatment and confirmed it was in, pretty sure Aphrodite posted this footage somewhere a year or so ago.

;)

After he knocked it back in, we helped pick him back up ... off the main street ... in Mildura.

Gave us a nod of thanks before running back into play to accept some well deserved high fives for his efforts.

It was so in, it is not funny but amusing the myth of it being out, continues to this day. Wayne Harmes himself has had a lot of fun letting Pie fans think it was out and not doing anything to remove their torture...lol

I've posted before that Harmesy and myself were best mates as kids, went to school and played all of our junior footy together before he headed to the Blues as a 15yo.

We caught up briefly after the GF late that night, both pretty hammered at that stage talking shit before he headed back out to rejoin with the teammates...but I had to ask whether it was in or out.

Not sure if Collingwood supporters would be 'happy' or not with his answer though.

Anyway, **** em'

Real contrast is how the umpires back then did not allow any chance of continued rolling mauls to congest play up for long periods back then.
The minute there is even the hint of 3 to 4 players fighting over a ball and no one clearing winning it, they blew the whistle and in essence say, "it is mine", meaning it is time to ball it up and open up the play again. It is amazing how it allows play to move on so much more, even in a muddy wet game, The umps should get back to this mode for the better of our game.

Are you partly to blame for his career being shorter than it should have been?
He seems so much bigger in 1986, that he looks to have let himself go, Whitnall style that he lost a few back ends of his career he should have been able to play at the high quality he did between 1979 and 1983.

I suspect he ate and drank too much after this period as he looks too big by 1986 to be an elite footballer anymore.
He was just a super super player in his prime it seems a shame he was almost washed up by 1986.

It was a classic Catch 22....he became injury prone largely because he was carrying extra weight...and when he was injured, he tended to eat and get on the Bacardi's too much. You gotta remember it was very different back in those days with diet and recovery....and a different club culture.

He was always chunky as a junior, but I got to see first hand how amazing he was a kid. He went to Carlton Under 19's half way through the season in 1975 as a 15yo, and finished 3rd in their B&F that year in just half a season....AND only missed his junior league's B&F by a few votes for the first half of the season. Scored 3 votes in every game he played that year in the junior league!! That's how good he was....

I won't keep prattling on, but I always remember the day that season before he went to Carlton, when we were playing against Corpus Christi on the Oak Park ground. We were down by 7 odd goals at three quarter time, and he kicked 8 goals in the final quarter to win us the game...from the midfield!!! For those in the know, Stan Gilday was playing for the opposition that day.

My sense is, you helped him be the chunky fellow he was.
How many times as a kid, did you say to Wayne, lets grab a donut as we pass the local milk bar? Fess up...

How many times as young adult did you encourage Wayne to have a few more Bacardi's 2 am Sunday morning ?

Did you steal us having a fit Wayne in 1986 ?

Did YOU cost us the 1986 premiership ?

How good is the run down though. As Percy Jones rightly pointed out about this team in those times, we did not concede the ball going over the boundary line easily. There are numerous examples of Jezza coached Carlton little players running down the ball before it crosses the boundary line and tapping it back towards a teammate.
It was no accident.. I suspect Jezza even trained them to be this way.

If Champion Data existed in 1979 and had stats on such things I sense we would have monstered every other club in league in how often we would keep ball alive to assist it get back to our team.

For all the fun of the myth of ball being out, it actually steals some of the great credit this team deserved for this amazing Jezza coached period.

Noooooo....he was well entrenched in the Carlton culture by that time, and we didn't see as much of each other at that stage.

Another little side story though to bore you to tears....only about 2 years earlier to the 79' GF, he called me to see if I wanted a game of tennis. His Auntie Marj had a tennis court in the back yard and had invited us around. He proceeded to kick my arse, and she put on lunch after the game....wonderful lady.

2 years later she was presenting Wayne with the inaugural Norm Smith Medal in the centre of the MCG.

Was Aunti Marj the famous Norm Smith's wife ?

Correct, and you win a 1981 boom box for getting it correct.
You can pick it up at nearest Brash's store to you on Wednesday morning.

Great thing about that side was spread of goal kickers.

We kicked some huge scores, yet Kenny Sheldon won the goal kicking with only 50 odd.

I loved Kenny Sheldon, one of my favourites of the mosquito fleet in this time.
It has always been my favourite way to kick winning scores. Be hard to stop by having a wealth of skillful running players that can kick goals. You do not need one gun key forward to kick 6 to 10 goals, it is better to have half the team able to kick goals and one or two bob up with 3 or 4 goals from time to time.

There is a game from Carlton in this period or early 1980's where one game we have 10 players kick 2 goals or more in the one match....
We need more of this in future.

Paddy Dow, learn to kick straight, mate...
