Can't stand him. Obsequious, simpering and excessively verbose.

Give me Harsha Bhogle any day of the week.
this - an irksome, mincing fop - the very worst of the pompous british style of cravatted popinjays..................streams of green vomit abound............bhogle on the other hand is a star born into the genuine seething melting-pot of real cricket and real people............

I'm a fan of the top-dog kiwi rugby commentator, Tony Johnson. Seemingly like most of the top line NZ commentators he has great knowledge, calls the game clearly without being dull or over the top, that nice middle ground where he's just saying enough and not embellishing anything to the point of frustration. The guy seriously knows his **** including all the players and can pronounce any name correctly (regardless of their heritage, be it Pacific Islander, Eurpoean, South American, Afrikaans). Also way less bias than the Aussie commentators, or the Bokkies who can be on a whole other level in that regard.

Some might disagree with me here on this one but out of the current head commentators at 7/Fox, I think Huddo might be the one I prefer.

Martin Tyler calls soccer and Phil Ligget called cycling the way you want our game to be called. Knowledgeable, succinct, a little flair when warranted and more importantly the ability to shut up and let the pictures speak for themselves.

Would love to hear Phil Ligget commentate AFL.

Of course you'd need footage of rolling French hills and chateaux in the background to complete the experience...

I'd argue that you're essentially making the same mistake as the people who make these products - and they are products rather than sports - are making.

You, and they, are looking at the sport from a marketer's perspective; how do we bring more fans to the game? How do we make the game more popular? Their answer is to make the game more itself, hence AFLX/T20; more scoring shots, more goals, more catches, more runouts, more more more more more! Always more! You, at least, are also coming at it from the standpoint that you love the game, or at the very least a team within it; most of the marketers of the sport do not possess the same affection or respect for it, and have no compulsion to try to preserve certain aspects of the game. So, a night Grand Final, commentators who bring the banter and the 'wow' factor; cheerleaders and fireworks and music between the overs or while a ball is fetched back from the crowd. What's League doing? What's Gridiron doing? What went on at the Superbowl, and more importantly, how can we best use it to exploit our fanbase to make money?

You - and they - are either looking at the sport and seeing nothing of merit, or looking at young people and seeing no ability to care or possess passion for what you are passionate about. This is a huge irritation of mine, because the old forget what youth was like, how instantly passionate you can be about something you enjoy. You think the crowds that fill the MCG these days are all above the age of 45?

AFL and test cricket is fine, without the bells and whistles. Test attendances are up in India and South Africa (and New Zealand)while our team might be terrible the attendances are okay considering, and test match cricket never has poor attendance in England and Australia anyway, nevermind the most recent broadcast deal for more money than ever before. AFL is bigger than it ever was, and this is as much in spite of the bullshit that surrounds the game these days as because of it.

Marketing point of view, fair call but unfortunately there is no other way. The expansion of the game is got one reason, to stop the growth of other sports in this country, to stifle League and Soccer in its tracks for the next generation.

The easy to FIX the whole problem/issues in our game is exactly what you brought up in your post. The NFL model...

The NFL has made it a ‘play everyone once’ model so that every game has a massive build up and a massive bearing on the season. For our game to survive and grow we must bite the bullet and reduce the number of games but build up each game so it means something right until the last game...

The NFL is still the most popular game in the US by some margin for this simple reason. The AFL know this and will eventually have to pull the trigger for all age groups to really enjoy the game.

You think that bums on seats means anything to the AFL??? They would be happier with 10K at the game and 1mil watching at home, make no mistake!

Play each other twice, once home and once away. Only fair way to do it

Will never happen, too many teams too many games. The game would drag on too long and the gulf between the good and bad would get bigger.

Imagine we had to suffer through another 8 games with that list from last season!
Get rid of preseason games and the bye rounds and it only extends the season by a couple of weeks.

Clubs get to choose if they rest players for certain games and increase the list by a couple more to help with player numbers.

Easy to do, if the AFL wanted to.

Reckon they would rather keep control through the FIXture to help manipulate who plays who and when and where it happens. Can reward or punish clubs with some control of the variables.

See, I reckon they should go the other way; alternating fixture, year on year, where each side plays each other once home and away across two seasons. Increase the number of byes, but split them up across the rounds to allow for the max amount of footy played.

Will it result in some sides - West Coast, for example - getting an artificial leg up one year before being up against it the next? Sure. Is it fairer than the current fixture? Absolutely.
