Strategy The case for a third tall forward

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Handling of our forward line over the rest of the season will be make or break coaching for Hinkley I reckon.

He can either admit that the mosquito fleet is a failure and bring in a 3rd (2nd) tall, Butcher or Shaw or even bloody Harvey it doesn't matter, just somebody that will give our midfield a target to kick to.

Or he can continue to stubbornly believe that a midget forward line of Monfries, Wingard and Mitchell is good enough to take us deep into September. And be proven wrong.

Ball's in his court come Thursday.

This is the price we pay for not drafting and developing enough KPP talent until very recently. It's a hole in our list that must be priority #1 this off season.

I've finally worked out what we have been doing wrong compared to the start of the season and even an extra tall in the F50 wouldn't have helped enough
It seems our ball movement in to the F50 has changed from brilliant linking up through the guts and wings and then lowering the eyes to hit up a forward small or large to bombing in long somehow
This style needs 3 Shultzes and even then it's rebound heaven
The start of the year our F50 entries were precise and shorter and we used our speed and run and playing on fast to link up faster
I remember thinking thank god we have gone away from the ol long bombs to the double teamed forwards
that other teams were doing

A readymade big boy would be nice, but once Harvey has some semblance of a tank he'd be very handy as the deep clunk option.

It's not as if he needs to go on the 5-year Falloon programme of water cress and ricecakes.

It's tough. We have some promising talent coming up but we're hot now. Harvey may not hit his straps for another 2-3 years and I'm not sure how reliable Butcher/Shaw will be in 2015. We need a reliable 2nd fiddle to support Schulz - heck, I'd be happy with Dawes at this point.

Kinda off topic but I'd like to bring in a dedicated goal kicking coach since it's kinda deplorable.

Apart from Schulz, Wingard and Boak, all our players look unconfident as hell when lining up for goal.
The two most costly misses tonight were those of Hartlett and Wines in the third. The three early in the last were from tough angles. Westhoff never kicks them, and Wingard was having one of those nights where he didn't look like making his shot. The shanks of Hartlett and Wines were just soul breakers.

Send Ken a highlights tape of West Coast in finals with a small dominant forward line in front of a top midfield. Coach put an average set of tall forwards there and they had a flag from two GF's. STRUCTURE'!!!!!!!!
Phil Matera's entire finals highlights would be enough.

Problem is that round 16 is too late in the season to be building around two legit KPFs.

No Shultz = unfunctional forward line, especially when our smalls are spaying shots. Seriously, what do we do if he goes down?

Nek minnut "Port Adelaide Jake Johansen (1st rd) & Caleb Daniel (2nd rd)"

We've made every excuse under the sun not to play Butcher over the past few years despite the dire need for us to develop a KPF (and us generally being a better side when he plays). It's time to play catch up.
Hinkley will look to trade Butcher at the end of this year on the basis that Butcher's trade value is now on the slide, and he'll try to make the most of what value he still has left.

If we trade in a decent tall like a Lycett or a Reid it'll be enough until the developing KPPs start playing consistent AFL footy.

We better be balls deep into negotiations with Lycett, we need a ready to go 2nd ruckman more than most other clubs & we need to get our man like we did with Polec.

I hate saying it but the Crows recruiter & list manager was smarter than ours over the 09-10 drafts, Moore might make it eventually but we ballsed up not getting Talia & picking Jasquibs over Darling/Lycett was a massive **** up in hindsight.

Right now I couldn't give a stuff if we cut a few of the superfluous to needs runners we've hoarded & even take a punt on Lewis Johnston who's going to be delisted at Crowland at seasons end.

I'd really like to say:

But I fear draft day is going to be 2004 - 2011 flashbacks of:

He might, but it would be an absolutely awful decision.

We'll get what, a late 2nd rounder?

He's currently our 3rd best player in a position where we have precious little depth. Unless we're bringing in a readymade KPF (who are like hens teeth and will cost us an arm and a leg), we're just going to make our list worse by trading him away.
