Theory on the problem with the logo - the Uncanny Valley
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

Claude was clearly not very 'crow-like'
1261-240x222.jpg

He's on two legs, wearing shoes...he has arms..and teeth!

But we're OK with that because he's a caricature. He is very far from an actual crow.

The there's the new logo which is still a caricature of a crow, but is closer to a real crow. Not close enough that people react to it like a photo, but not far enough away. So for some people, it is in the creepy in between area - the uncanny valley.

That said, it is still far enough away for me. I think it's average, but not the disaster that some seem to.

Oh cmon, you can't tell the difference between the 2 and you think the new logo is more like a Crow?

I give up.

Not sure where you're getting that from a post talking about the differences between the two...

and you think the new logo is more like a Crow?

You suggest that the walking, arm and teeth having cartoon that wears shoes is the more realistic representation of a crow? Not sure what crows you're seeing.

I give up.
Probably best you do.

You see this is where I have an issue. I'm not here to beg the club to change a logo to something that actually represents our club. I've expressed why I want it changed, if the club doesn't have the brains to realise that the logo for the Adelaide Crows should be a Crow then they are beyond helping.
And you're entitled to that opinion. I on the other hand think something a bit more productive can be done - and that you're being ridiculously harsh.

it would be almost passable if it ditched the eyelashes, was a more navy blue, and took off its shredder helmet to reveal a crow like head.

Honestly I don't think our logo is that bad. I just wish they got the colours right. That washed out blue just looks so wrong.

The font reminds me too much of KFC.

(wish I could get 24 nuggets for $10 at the footy)

Secondly the colour. It's obviously a lighter blue so you can see the outlines and features, but it's not one of our colours. I've seen versions of it that are a couple of shades darker- not navy- but closer to it, and it looks way less offensive IMO.

agree with that a lot, the colour choices, especially the blue,is the main issue. it is really the main thing that makes our original logo "stronger"

From memory, I think the reason given for the colour change was so that the logo would look better/stand out on our navy blue club apparel. This has some merit but completely over looks the fact that more often than not the logo is seen in isolation.

Id prefer slightly lighter blue tops with dark navy logo than the other way around. We aren't the only club who put out logo on shirts, etc of the same colours and it seem the be a non issue for anyone else

Now we're getting into the compelling realms.
Except it tells the wrong story. I think we did 350k last year though if I understood what Fages said to us the other day.
i wonder if the 2012 figures are a result of great on field performance (definitely) and then the 2013 figures are a flow on from that (when is the cut off, season of calendar year as after a good season a lot of xmas presents may be crows related and even early season expectation the following year)

Bad sales this yr would reflect 2 bad on field years. Its too simple to try give 1 reason

Am I the only one that doesn't see the logo as an issue? When I say I don't see it as an issue I mean I don't have any allegiance to the logo nor do I think any designs that I have seen as an alternative would gain my allegiance either. You look at a Liverpool coat of arms or the Magpies logo and you see something special, but only a few clubs seem to have that connection to the logo where it is of such standing that it will never be changed. I don't see the AFC ever possessing a logo that stands out as that minority of logos that garners attention and demands respect. I've seen other clubs rebrand themselves and I think to myself "that's nice", but I don't get jealous, I don't get frustrated that another club has a logo to be envious of.

By all means, go forth and force the change you seek, but I don't think it's going to mean as much as you think it will. Kids will barrack for Adelaide regardless of the logo and to be honest, those kids that don't pick our side to barrack for and choose to pick another side because of their logo compared to ours are supporters we can live without.

Ideally, we would let the logo thing slide unless we stumble across a design that is so epic that it can't be passed upon and would become an institution that would stay forever with the club.

Brisbane Roar recently rebranded and did a fantastic job of making a logo that doesn't look like it's trying too hard to be old and prestige while remaining contemporary, professional and traditional.

For the most part its the business that makes the logo and gives it a legacy, but it has to be something fans/customers like and can connect with

Liverpool have changed their logo plenty of times albeit subtly. As have Man U, Spurs, Arsenal.

A more subtle approach to our logo changes would have been nice.

I hear the Regent Arcade store has closed this week due to lack of business, pretty compelling case there for our logo/merchandise to be given an overhaul.
It was never going to be a success, you are only selling to a limited market in a shit spot. Besides it was always going to take away from some existing sales at West Lakes. But given we no longer play their where are we going to sell our shit from?

Shouldn't the on field product trump that? I mean are people really superficial enough to base their support on a logo?

I don't really get the "it doesn't look like a crow" argument, I reckon if you made it black and took it to the street to ask people which bird head it was you would get quite a few people saying crow, but black isn't one of our colours. My issue with the logo is the cartoon font that sits next to it and makes the whole thing look childish. I think if you changed the font to a professional, more serious font that counterbalances the cartoon logo, much less people would have an issue with it. Change it to say "Adelaide Football Club" not "Adelaide Crows" while you're at it.

But I don't think people realise how expensive it is to change a logo, they are expensive to make, especially for a large business like a football clubs where there are so many chefs who want to have a stir, just look at how opinionated everyone is in this thread, everyone wants to have a say on a thing like a logo and every change costs thousands, but the most expensive part is implementing it, you need to replace everything in the HQ and AO that has a logo on it, all office stationary, all letter heads, posters, billboards, uniforms, everything in the store, the store fronts, any cars with sign writing, literally anything with a logo on it needs to be thrown out and a new one has to be purchased.

Why cant we get both? strong on field and a logo we like. taking things to the extreme, if they made the logo a penis, or a picture of Tony Abbott, doesnt it stand to reason that fewer people would buy merchandise, and peoples engagement and loyalty to the club would suffer?

A bad logo has this effect, though not to the degree tony abbotts penis would.

Maybe if we were the Adelaide Budgies

Having strong branding is very hugely important for marketing and brand recognition. The Adelaide Logo and subsequant branding should capture the ethos of the clup, be quite simple and easily recognisable as the Adelaide Football Club. If you look at the NBA / NFL / MLB etc, the clubs logos and branding is very recognisable. Yes it is a much bigger sport, but logos and branding is important, just look at teams like the All Blacks. Nothing stopping Adelaide from stepping up and taking our club branding and marketing as a serious business area, and if done correctly, a large money spinner for the club.

It was kind of annoying being at the Oval for the KFC Big Bash, advertising KFC every 5 seconds when you can't get it at the ground anyway. Was craving a chicken filly burger by the end of the night.
