Theory on the problem with the logo - the Uncanny Valley
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

Claude was clearly not very 'crow-like'
1261-240x222.jpg

He's on two legs, wearing shoes...he has arms..and teeth!

But we're OK with that because he's a caricature. He is very far from an actual crow.

The there's the new logo which is still a caricature of a crow, but is closer to a real crow. Not close enough that people react to it like a photo, but not far enough away. So for some people, it is in the creepy in between area - the uncanny valley.

That said, it is still far enough away for me. I think it's average, but not the disaster that some seem to.
I don't think it's worth comparing Claude to any of our main logos because he was never used as one, so I think it's safe to assume that whatever factors were considered in his creation were probably different to what you'd consider for a main logo. In fact I think having a secondary logo gives us the freedom to do things like appealing to kids without compromising the integrity of our main logo, perhaps this may even have been one of the reasons that led to his creation and implementation.

I don't really get the "it doesn't look like a crow" argument, I reckon if you made it black and took it to the street to ask people which bird head it was you would get quite a few people saying crow, but black isn't one of our colours.
By telling people it's a bird head in the first place you're already doing most of the work identifying the thing for them.;):p

Having a strong brand is incredibly important because it makes you look more professional as an organisation, which makes quality people more likely to want to be involved with you. How you present yourself aesthetically is really important to that.

With the less professional Trigg/Sando era behind you, now is the perfect time to change your logo to reflect the Fagan/Walsh era, which in theory will hold your club to a higher standard across the board.

Why cant we get both? strong on field and a logo we like. taking things to the extreme, if they made the logo a penis, or a picture of Tony Abbott, doesnt it stand to reason that fewer people would buy merchandise, and peoples engagement and loyalty to the club would suffer?

A bad logo has this effect, though not to the degree tony abbotts penis would.

Sure, if you changed your logo to something offensive, you're going to get a negative feedback, but when does that ever happen? I've heard strong and numerous arguments for the change of the logo and if that's what people want, go at it, I'd rather replace our logo with something epic rather than something that just appears to be better for the sake of removing the old logo.

Henry raised that, in many aspects of media and key AFL events like draft day etc, we are often called the ‘Adelaide Crows’ as opposed to ‘Adelaide Football Club’. Conversation possibly went longer on this than warranted but key points back were that this is often the broadcaster, not the club. One of the key considerations Shutts has heard is that it fills up the ‘space’ better. At the club and with the advertiser we are the Adelaide Football Club.
Just another reason why we should change our logo.:D

Firstly who decides what's aesthetically pleasing? There are a lot of people on BF who don't like the logo but this is a pretty small sample size.

Secondly, if the club really needs a new logo to perform to a higher standard, we've got some serious problems, which probably can't be remedied by new logo's, Guernsey's or any of the usual marketing shenanigans.

The only thing that really matters is performance on the field. You can only create a strong brand by winning flags. Everything else is just gravy.

To be a great club you have to be great on every front. In 2015, how you present yourself is a big part of that.

Everyone will have a different opinion on something like a logo, but the overwhelming response from my experience living in Adelaide and posting on this forum when the change was made was that this was not well received and continues to be unpopular. Does that mean everyone hates it? Of course not, but that doesn't mean it's right.

As I said, presenting yourself professionally an important part of how you are viewed as a club, and that can affect how people see your club and how good people feel about joining your club. This whole "forget everything else just get it right on the field" attitude is silly, because

a) The two kinds of improvement you need aren't mutually exclusive and can both be achieved at the same time

and

b) Being a great club isn't just about how your players train and play. It's about everything you do and represent as a club. The more things you do well, the more success you will have.

The Hawks colours and jumper is shit aweful and uninspiring. ....... just saying.

They changed their logo from their average old logo to the bold and striking current logo in 2008... just saying.

They can't change their colours, but it's going to be pretty hard to argue that they don't package them incredibly well.

I still think its worse than our current one.

If you put them both in a poll you'd get absolutely slaughtered.

As I said in the previous post, everyone will rank club logos differently, but i'd imagine the vast majority would have the current Hawks logo ahead of the current Crows.

It's not about the logo itself.

Logos are symbols. The current logo is a symbol which symbolises the Trigg era. Looking at it reminds us of Trigg and what he did to our club.

The Hawks are not a powerhouse because they changed their logo. Rather they got their shit together on all fronts. We are currently doing this. CEO, Coach, Board, club philosophy. Building on our good recent recruiting (Ogilvie, Noble and Rendell), good development (recent rising star performance).

Rebranding tomorrow achieves nothing. Let's get a new logo when there is something strong for it to symbolise. A middle of the road club with a "bold strong logo" which "makes a statement" is meaningless. -Yay we have an awesome logo but always finish 6th to 12th........

I absolutely maintain that if there is anything at all that a football club isn't doing well, the club should do their best to fix it.

That's as true for visual branding as it is for anything else your club does.

Logos don't seem to be such a big deal for the giant football clubs like Man U, Real Madrid, Barca etc. Or for the NFL teams for that matter. Name, colours, nickname sure.

You are talking about sporting clubs that spend millions of dollars on getting their branding right, and clubs that take their logos very seriously.

Even more so in the NFL, where logos are changed or updated all the time.

Thought the logo actually looked alright on DT's black cap at the presser today.
I absolutely hate our logo but I agree. Done like this I actually warm to it a bit as it looks simpler and kinda badass.
I've never bought any merchandise with our current logo on it (luckily for me there's plenty of stuff without it) but i'm actually considering buying this hat.
