Why would anyone have hard feelings towards a kid who slogged away for five years on our list and was probably a little unfairly treated too
I'd always thought there were concerns over his size and ability to remain uninjured if he went into the AFL. He's stacked on a fair bit of weight and seems healthy. If he gets the ruck spot I'll be watching more North games. Cuz BOG in constant 10 goal losses should make everyone happy.

lol Powell, that was hilarious. Got summoned by the girlfriend from memory.

I wonder what Woewodin thinks of Powell. :D Didn't Powell quit after all playing lists had been finalised and cost Woewodin an opportunity with the Roos considering he was training with them at the time?

He quit in mid january i think. Apparently his girlfriend didnt settle in well living in Melbourne & Ive heard numerous times he lacked motivation. Anyone know if he still plays local footy in NSW?

Woewodin was prepared to play for the absolute minimum aswell.

He played for Queanbeyan in AFL Canberra for a few seasons and then North Shore in the SFL after that. Not sure where is now.

Don't think it was a major loss all around, with him or Woewodin, was just funny how it panned out and was typical of our recruitment before we overhauled it.

What does everyone think of the fact we have so many ex players who spent a lot of time in our reserves, playing at other clubs now or in the near past that were re-drafted to the AFL after spending a season or more at various state leagues.
  • Daniel Currie (North Melbourne)
  • Peter Faulks (Fremantle)
  • Simon Phillips (ex Port Adelaide)
  • Sam Rowe (Carlton)
  • Jon Simpkin (ex Geelong now Hawthorn)
  • Dean Terlich (Melbourne)
Is is a tick to our recruiters who could spot the potential in these players or is it a cross against our coaches and/or development system that these 6 players all had to spend time in state leagues (4 SANFL 2 VFL) before they were picked up again.

I think it's got more to do with our success.

You look at our offcasts between 2007-2011 and most opposition teams would be thinking, if they can't break into a swans team that's only just making the 8, how much can they add to our side

Fast forward to the end of 2012 and we offloaded TDL, Currie, Spangher (I'm sure there was someone else) and we get something back in return. I think we've finally reached the point where teams will look at our offcasts and say, it's tough to break into that solid swans team, their youngsters might have a bit of value in them.

I just think it's the way the system works.
None of the players would IMO be close our best 22 (when all our players are available) and it's just a fact of life that clubs delist/trade fringe players and all were originally speculative draft picks. 4 were rookies. Currie was taken at pick 49, Faulks pick 65.
Sometimes players need to physically or mentally develop and/or improve and a season or two at a lower level may be what the player needs.
As much as anything I think there is now a willingness to draft mature age players especially as rookies, as we did with Rampe.

Oh but that applies to all players at all clubs, not just ours in particular. I probably should have done the research in depth, but I get the feeling that having 6 players in this situation would be greater the mean at the other clubs.

So if you're Byron Sumner or Nathan Gordon and reading this thread, your future looks pretty bright!

Not one of the 6 you named has proven themselves as having totally stepped up. Currie looks likely and Rowe showed a bit but until we see a decent return from a consecutive games there's nothing to suggest any one in our camp got it wrong.

Good post grim, and a good question asked at the end. I am very hesitant to mark them as a tick for our recruiters, because they had the chance to pick Luke Breust after watching him in the reserves and failed to do so. But it will be great to watch the likes of Rowe, Terlich and Currie as they get another chance

I think its got to be a credit to our recruiters and out club despite the fact that these blokes have ended up making it elsewhere. Theres been many positive comments about these blokes from their minor league coaches at the time of their 2nd recruitment and I'd like to think the professionalism of the Swans has rubbed off on them. You don't see many ex Richmond players getting a second chance after being delisted!

I think we probably ditched Rowe too quickly he'll be handy for the Blues, Currie just took too long but I think he'll impact this year, Port delisted Phillips - we made the right call, Faulks will need a good season to stay on Freos list this year, Simpkin is a top notch VFL player, he'll be OK at AFL level but he's no star, Terlich ?? I guess we'll just have to wait and see

I will not lose sleep over any of those players. They currently have 19 AFL games between them (most of those for Philips, and half of his were with us). None is going to be a star, they will be useful bottom of your 22 players at the very best, and quite possibly not on an AFL list again at the end of the season at worst. None would be challenging for a position in our best team right now.

You also need to consider the fact that keeping one or more or these players on our list would have meant not bringing in the same number of other players over the last few years. When it becomes clear that a player isn't going to be pushing for selection in the 22 it is time for them to be removed from the squad so you can bring in another player to give them that opportunity. You can't keep a guy like Rowe or Faulks (both drafted in 2006) or Currie (2007) or Rowe (2008) on the list indefinitely, if they don't show something within the first year or two you have to cut your losses and look elsewhere.

What this does tell us, though, is that we should see 18 year olds as the be all and end all when it comes to drafting. Sometimes it will pay to wait 3 or 4 years, give a guy time to develop in the VFL/WAFL/SANFL, before bringing them onto an AFL list. Obviously you risk that the player will get picked up by another club in the interim, but there are real limits on how many players you can horde "just in case" for 5 or 6 years on your list (I'd say that limit is pretty close to, if not, 0) without them proving their ability to be in your best.

Wait until the real stuff starts.
Currie will have to deal with one ruckman after another going hard at it, week after week & stay injury free. That was his main issue with us. NAB meant he came up against lesser ruckmen that were still getting game time. As for the other players, consistency is what will get them games in a good team. Spangher is the nost likely to get a spot in the Hawks team because Suckling has gone down & Spangher offers that forward option & he can help out in the ruck if needed. He has a few strings to his bow. Much like LRT for us. He also has the senior experience & has played finals with us.
Perhaps Terlich will be OK with regular game time but that's only because I have Melbourne finishing bottom 4.

I guess they have been given their final opportunity. They need to grab it & hit the ground running.

Heath, Terlich and Rowe would be the ones I can see potentially playing 22 games this year. The Spang is depth only for the Hawks, TDL will need to show some consistency to keep a place, Currie is currently 3rd in line, Simpkin has alot of competition in that midfield, Faulks is playing for his career, ditto Johnston (and Vez seems to be struggling big time if you visit the Dogs board)

One possible reason that we may have more recycled State league players is the situation with our ressies.

Those guys would have been playing in the ACT comp, lower standard than than the SANFL/VFL/WAFL and far less monitored by recruiters than those leagues.

So they'd have been watched less, none were really dominant ACT league players, so whilst I'm sure other clubs were aware of them they may simply not have had sufficient knowledge/confidence that those guys were AFL ready until watching them elsewhere.

Emma Quayle is bringing out an updated version of her book The Draft covering the careers of the 5 players* since their drafting.
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/draft-tales-boys-becoming-men-20130329-2gz0g.html

One of the players she profiled was Veszpremi.
Snippet from the article;
(on) Veszpremi's tortuous time in Sydney. ''I didn't feel like I was there to play football,'' he says. ''It was all fitness and weight, fitness and weight.''
Even now it appears he doesn't grasp the reason for that focus.

*Other 4 are Cotchin, (Brad) Ebert, McEvoy & Rioli.

PS Enjoyed the first book, hopefully the updated version will also be a good read .
