You must be from toorak or similar, looking up to the women that drink gin and you do the same to feel somewhat sophisticated but actually appear to be more likely to be batting for the same team.

Maker's Mark is horribly bland, overpriced, oversweetened stuff. Even for bourbon.

Another Bond and Royal navy drink of choice, though due to the bitters, one more associated with summer and the Caribbean.

Never tried one myself, I am so so on the bitters.

One of the funniest moments on the classic TV show "Minder" was Arfur hobnobbing it up at the yacht club with the retired navy gents who all ordered pink gins. Not to be outdone, Arfur ordered a pink vodka.

I don't mind the occasional gin, though I prefer whisky. Coincidentally, my favourite gin is The Botanist which is made by Bruichladdich, better known for their peated Islay whiskies.

Canadian Club is my second favourite if there's no Jameson.

Jameson is my favourite, but I just don't drink it that often. A mate of mine gave me a bottle of Dimple for my 40th, which I expect to have a dram from when I turn 50 such is the infrequency of my forays into whisky.

I like Jameson too. Have some at home. I also don't mind gin but mainly in the summer. I have a few friends that like it with juice but I only really like it with tonic and lime. Can't say I've ever heard anybody say it's a woman's drink. Mostly, I'm a beer, rum or red wine drinker though.

I tried the Beefeater 24 today, in a G&T with a wedge of ruby grapefruit. It has some interesting aromatics and generally gets great reviews. Neat it is a subtle gin, with a hint of peal and tea notes. Great aroma though, but definitely not as distinct as a Hendrik's, or citrusy as a Bombay.

Was pretty alright, though it is better in cocktails I think.

There are new styles being introduced away from the traditional heavy juniper London Dry. I know Nicks Wine Merchants in Melbourne are carrying near 80 gins now from all over the Globe. A couple of my favourites of late have been Tuthilltown Half Moon Gin from upstate New York which use an Apple and Wheat base, opposed to traditional Grain and Monkey 47 from Germany.

Give it a try, you might be surprised.

A couple of my favourites of late have been Tuthilltown Half Moon Gin from upstate New York which use an Apple and Wheat base, opposed to traditional Grain and Monkey 47 from Germany.

Give it a try, you might be surprised.

Don't remember my first, but my best was on a houseboat on Kariba watching the sun go down. Quinine in the tonic was useful too because I'd forgotten to get any anti-malaria tablets.
