The Good, The Bad, The Atkins

The Good
Not allowed to yell in a hospital
Mackay , Laird, Crouch
Fogarty and Doedee the future

The Bad
Not allowed to yell in a hospital
Lack of leadership and game plan for that last quarter
Betts watch

The Ugly
Dougies bump
Not winning
No hunger.

-WTF does Pyke keep selecting McKay, Douglas, Jenkins.

-Atkins – Jericho-like

-Thankfully we wont have to sit through another insipid performance from this team on the last day in Sept. Won't make the top 4.

-Betts - Finished
I suspect that at the end of the round we will be one game and percentage off top spot.

Obviously it just a select few that see Atkins as a downhill skier of the highest order. Weak as piss.
Mackay did have some good patches, but hell he is soft at the ball and just can’t be relied on to hit a target or kick a goal when needed consistently.
Talia panics and slams the ball on the boot to make it someone else’s problem.
Hartigan and Kelly aren’t much better when the pressure is on.
CEY was great in close hand balling it to Essendon players consistently and kicking it to no one in particular.
Probably Bett’s worst game for the club.
Gov was soundly beaten.
JJ lack of chase and leading up at the ball is so gawddam frustrating I want to scream and I did-lots.
Thought Doedee played ok once he settled his nerves, but needs some switching to happen to make sure he isn’t left 1:1
Dougy is probably gone for weeks and missed a vital goal he should have slotted.
Thor was ok, kicked a great goal, but looks underdone.
Murphy was ok, nearly had two goals, but lacks the zing CC had, early days worth persisting with.
The Fog tried, but ran out of gas, he will be a star.

Brown was his solid self.
Sauce worked his way into the game, but seriously needs to work out that he needs to tap it to our players at the centre bounces.
Seedsman was ok, but lacked the power and accuracy in his kick that I remembered.

Gibbs had a good first three quarters, but fell out of the game in the last.
Sloaney was hard at it all night, unlucky to get pinged HTB in the last.
Lairdy just keeps getting the ball. If he was a foot taller he could have been an elite midfielder.
M Crouch is a frickin ball magnet. He just knows how to get to the best spots.

The umps were putrid all night, inconsistent and lazy. Sucked in by the rabid injector supporters.
BT can piss off to an old folks home, I am so sick of his bullshite.

Take five or six best 22 players out of any side playing a top eight contender on their home deck and it is a tough ask.

Add to that three teenagers on debut running out of puff, a physically shot CEY and Hampton on the bench and it is obvious why Woosha told his players to play on at all costs. Essendon were manic in their forward movement at the end. Woosha spotted a weakness and went for it.

But we had a decent chance to win and ultimatley poor shot selection from Dougie and a missed mark and then swing in hope kick from Greenwood cost us the game. These two passages of play are what I am most disappointed in.

Eddie missing a soda and trying to take mark of the year didn’t help much either.

Eddie has to get back to doing the grunt work that created his goals up untill the last few games.
Forget the high marking and fancy lil kicks. Get back to constant ground pressure and buzzing around the contest being a pest.

He is better than the guy who has played the last four or so games.

Looked liked a GF replay.. every kick we had was a desperate, blind hack forward under intense pressure while Essendon were able to find loose players and hit targets.

Teams have figured out a clear blueprint for beating us and we don't have an answer.

We go to water under pressure and have done so for the last 20 years bar a few games here and there.

This is a culture problem and it'll never be fixed
We are often quite competitive against good sides in the regular season. We play poorly with little pressure peak when we play a Geelong at home then wilt in GF type pressure.

Amazing we ended up so close.

Too many absolute non-contributors:
Rat - shocking lack of intensity
CEY - lack of awareness and poor disposal
Curtly - see CEY
Mitch - just couldn’t get into it
Thor - short of a run (forced to play before ready)

Only seen in flashes:
JJ - couple of marks, mainly invisible
Eddie - failed at the spectacular, failed at the basics
Dougie - just could not get near it enough

Defenders under the pump:
Tahlia - some good early work on Daniher, struggled later
Hartigan - tall forwards owned him

Good:
Crouch - just keeps on racking up possessions
Gibbs - class shows
Laird - kept us in it early
Sloane - worked his guts out as usual

Promising:
Fogarty - love him already
Doedee - fought back well after a shaky start
Murphy - not a lot of touches, but a real terrier when around the ball.

Fair:
Mackay
Sauce
Brown
Seedsman

I felt like both Betts and McGovern kept trying to take mark of the year instead of just playing the percentages.

Yes. McGovern was responsible for the start of the last-quarter onslaught. He flew for a speccy on HFF-wing, completely unnecessarily, taking himself out of the play, and the ball was whisked down the other end.

McGovern gets paid to do that....Betts does not....really starting to bother me with Eddie, ground ball is what he gets paid to do not impede our talls..

Good: Laird, Crouch, Doedee and Gibbs (in spots), Fogarty first kick first goal club, Douglas giving himself a holiday next week
Bad: Jacobs, Betts
Ugly: Ratkins, Jacobs (both probably did just enough for a hame next week)

Thought our younger defenders outperformed their more senior counterparts.

Gibbs looked class in patches

Jenkins is still the most infuriating player on our list and possibly in the whole competition.

Sloane is the heart and soul of this team

We won’t be able to replace Smith’s absence this season

CEY is a good sized prospect and I hope he’s given more opportunities

Fogarty is an absolute animal. 1 game and I’m already calling him as our next captain. Has everything you want in a footballer.

Laird was exceptional

That was close to Eddie’s worst game for our club. Truly hope it’s just early season being underdone and he hasn’t started the descent off the cliff face with age.

Mackay was good for three quarters of the
Game and actually broke lines. Nearly undid all of his efforts with that last quarter effort. Wasn’t Robinson Crusoe though.

Talia struggled.

Gov did too.

Essendon are a decent side and we had a lot of C and D grade footballers/performances tonight.

Frustrating but it’s round one.
I think you've summed it up pretty well. I'd just add that Atkins continued his form from late last season, really struggled.

I didn't think we'd miss Lever that much, but tonight there was little poise and quality of delivery out of defence. Seemed like we struggled to get the ball out cleanly if Laird wasn't involved. Obviously missing Smith too.
Maybe Gibbs could help with that, not sure Gibson would have been the answer to that problem.

I'm also thinking CEY was a better player 3 years ago, hopefully it's just a matter of getting back into it, he's missed a lot of footy.

Super impressed with Fogarty, and Doedee settled into the game pretty well after looking a bit overawed early on. Murphy probably not around it enough to make any judgement except that it seems he's more comfortable up forward than in defence.

Best part about losing is no BT in our rooms after the game.
