Was staying in an 8 bed dorm in a hostel in Edinburgh and some selfish bastard got reception to give him a wake up call for 6am, not only did he get woken up at 6am so did the f***ing rest of us.
Fair enough getting a wake up call when you're staying in a single room in a hotel but not when you're sharing a room in a hostel.
Travel Joy Hostel in London and Grandio Party Hostel in Budapest should never be stayed at by anyone. Both filthy as all ****.
There are some great hostels in Europe....but there's some shit ones as well.
Best i've stayed at are Hanoi Backpackers in Vietnam, Greg and Tom in Krakow, Circus in Berlin and Wombats in Vienna.

Which hostel? I worked at a couple there.
Lol at banning alarm clocks. Some people actually want to get up and enjoy their time in a foreign place rather than staying in bed.
One of the ones i used to work at used a water pistol if anyone wanted a wake up call! haha I was permanently drunk the 2 years i lived there i reckon! hahaCan't remember the name of it, was pretty much permanently drunk the couple of days I was there. Edinburgh Ale Trail ftw.
Wasn't totally serious about banning alarm clocks, you shouldn't need to be waking up before 7-8am though unless you have to catch an early morning plane, train or bus somewhere.

Defintely advocate for Greg and Tom's in Krakow, that place is awesome. Cheap, free shots and dinner, awesome atmosphere. The showers are a little confusing though. Any Wombat's hostel is pretty good. Yoho in Salzburg is pretty nice too.Travel Joy Hostel in London and Grandio Party Hostel in Budapest should never be stayed at by anyone. Both filthy as all ****.

LOL im currently staying here. Nothing wrong with it? It's pretty clean tbh. Maybe you just picked a bad time? Im even staying in a room with a balcony.
In the last month i've stayed at atleast 10 hostels around England and this one is one of the best. Kipps in Brighton was also good for a relaxed but not boring hostel. Generator and St Christopher's are good party hostels I guess, Belushis bars are always good...
Haven't had many bad/funny experiences tbh. There was an Italian guy who was the loudest snorer ive ever heard and kept trying to talk to me even though he spoke about 2 words in English.
I'm finding most of the long-termers think they own the place and are annoying as ****.
Grand Hostel in Berlin. Best hostel ever.

Worst hostel hands down is Piccadilly Backpackers in London. It had a horrible, cold, lunatic asylum vibe about it and was pretty much just a bed factory. The White Tulip in Amsterdam was also pretty seedy.

Awesome thread, was hoping if anyone could recommend good cheap hostels for me?
Ive been looking over hostelworld.com and seeing whats on offer. Basically going to be in London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Munich, Rome, Florence. Anyone know good hostels in those places? Costs?

First time I went to London I ended up staying in some Notting Hill hostel. We arrived late and went to get a bite to eat to the sound of stacks of sirens in the area. Came back to our hostel not long after to riot police fully decked out storming the place. Turns out a permanent resident of the hostel had stabbed someone in the neck around the corner.. Welcome to London!
Fly out to SE Asia tomorrow. Staying at the Reggae Mansion in Kuala Lumpur, then onto Laos (Vang Vieng & Luang Prabang), Vietnam (Hanoi, ~Sapa, ~Halong Bay, ~Hoi An, Saigon), Cambodia (Phnom Penh, somewhere on the coast - Snooky, Kampot etc, ~Battambang, Siem Reap). Any recommendations for any of these places for hostels/guesthouses? Dont want massive party places where you cant get a minutes sleep, but still want them to have some atmosphere.
That's the one - defo the one to stay in if anyone is going to Edinburgh. Has 300 beds but doesn't feel that big at allCastle Rock? Good hostel, run by alcoholics. My kind of scene
Worst hostel was a rat-and-cockroach infested dive within the spectacularly iffy Chungking Mansions in Kowloon, Hong Kong. You could smell rat piss no matter where you were in the tiny dorm and could see the bastards crawling along the window sills. Moved a few floors further up after one night and the only rats were the occasional one in the kitchen.
