Was staying in an 8 bed dorm in a hostel in Edinburgh and some selfish bastard got reception to give him a wake up call for 6am, not only did he get woken up at 6am so did the f***ing rest of us.

Fair enough getting a wake up call when you're staying in a single room in a hotel but not when you're sharing a room in a hostel.

Which hostel? I worked at a couple there.

Travel Joy Hostel in London and Grandio Party Hostel in Budapest should never be stayed at by anyone. Both filthy as all ****.

There are some great hostels in Europe....but there's some shit ones as well.

Best i've stayed at are Hanoi Backpackers in Vietnam, Greg and Tom in Krakow, Circus in Berlin and Wombats in Vienna.

Best 3 nights of my life so I guess we differ!

Can't remember the name of it, was pretty much permanently drunk the couple of days I was there. Edinburgh Ale Trail ftw.

Lol at banning alarm clocks. Some people actually want to get up and enjoy their time in a foreign place rather than staying in bed.

Wasn't totally serious about banning alarm clocks, you shouldn't need to be waking up before 7-8am though unless you have to catch an early morning plane, train or bus somewhere.

One of the ones i used to work at used a water pistol if anyone wanted a wake up call! haha I was permanently drunk the 2 years i lived there i reckon! haha

The Grand Hostel in Berlin was awesome.

Many fond memories of Hostelling.
My Favourite was this Aussie dude in Glasgow who said that he was a gymnast and that he could fwd somersault from the top bunk and land on his feet.

End result- He faceplanted on the bottom bunk, no serious damage and then swigged the bottle of vodka that was in the room.

LOL im currently staying here. Nothing wrong with it? It's pretty clean tbh. Maybe you just picked a bad time? Im even staying in a room with a balcony. :thumbsu:

In the last month i've stayed at atleast 10 hostels around England and this one is one of the best. Kipps in Brighton was also good for a relaxed but not boring hostel. Generator and St Christopher's are good party hostels I guess, Belushis bars are always good...

Haven't had many bad/funny experiences tbh. There was an Italian guy who was the loudest snorer ive ever heard and kept trying to talk to me even though he spoke about 2 words in English.

I'm finding most of the long-termers think they own the place and are annoying as ****.

actually now camsmith mentioned long-termers, when i was in helsinki i was in the same room as an irish fella who i got on well with. and staying the hostel but in a different room was some albanian fella (who looked about late 40's or so). once he found out the irish fella was from ireland he was constantly asking and asking him questions about work in ireland and getting a passport and the likes, after a day or 2 of it he was already sick of his questions and kept having to tell him that there weren't many jobs in ireland at all. the irish fella was quite blunt about it in the end, but there was something sketchy about his story and what he was up to considering he reckons he was going to stay with a relative already in ireland for free. what the hell he was doing in helsinki we never found out. but he ended up getting himself kicked out when he decided to sit next to a girl on her laptop in the lounge/kitchen area and put on the cheeziest of one liners while trying to play with her hair. she kept telling him to go away but he wouldn't listen. she eventually got up after 10-15 minutes of it and went and complained to the front desk about it and we never seen that albanian fella again. dodgy. i think the front desk were onto him in a way as well, cause whenever i walked past when he was there he was giving off some spiel about where he was trying to go and the likes.

Defintely advocate for Greg and Tom's in Krakow, that place is awesome. Cheap, free shots and dinner, awesome atmosphere. The showers are a little confusing though. Any Wombat's hostel is pretty good. Yoho in Salzburg is pretty nice too.

The Clink in Kings Cross is not fit for a battery hen let alon humans. Being an old court house it is litteraly like being in prison. I stayed in a dump in Amsterdam too, can't remember the name if it. Stunk and had bed's like prison beds also.

Are the showers still freezing or boiling with no temperature in between?

I was in a 6 bed dorm and it was honestly too small a room even for 4 beds. The heating was unbearably hot. The bar downstairs was absolutely dead every night.

I cannot even put in words how much I hated that place. St Christopher's was 100x better.

Best hostel I stayed in was The Riverhouse in Cardiff, smallish but had everything you want in a hostel, it even had free cider night!

Worst hostel hands down is Piccadilly Backpackers in London. It had a horrible, cold, lunatic asylum vibe about it and was pretty much just a bed factory. The White Tulip in Amsterdam was also pretty seedy.

Eastern Europe has some great hostels too. The best party hostel I stayed at was the Hippo Hostel in Budva, Montenegro. Everyone hung out in the garden drinking 70c froffies from across the road and went out partying at night.

Some other good hostels around Europe worth a mention are:
Astor Hyde Park (London), Art Roch (Edinburgh), Room Rotterdam, Jor Place (The Hague), Hotel Baccarat (Nice), Oasis Backpackers (Seville), Berat Backpackers (Beret, Albania), Bada Bing Hostel (Istanbul), Instant Groove! (Budapest), Hostel Possonium (Bratislava) and The Walrus Waterloo (London)

If by confusing you mean ****ing awesome. Very fond memories of playing with the radio, lights and trillions of water jets while in their showers.

This thread just makes me want to go backpacking again as soon as possible.

Spot on. Plus they had those annoying ****s who tried to get you an a pub crawl every night of the week. Not the worst thing in the world but their persistence drove me up the wall.

Best one for me was Sant Jordi Hostel in Barcelona. Very relaxed, clean and had a killer pub crawl there. Decent kitchen and Lounge area with plenty of computers and wifi. Highly recommend.

St Christophers, Generator, Wombats are all generally decent regardless of where you are.

Castle Rock? Good hostel, run by alcoholics. My kind of scene:thumbsu:

Worst hostel was a rat-and-cockroach infested dive within the spectacularly iffy Chungking Mansions in Kowloon, Hong Kong. You could smell rat piss no matter where you were in the tiny dorm and could see the bastards crawling along the window sills. Moved a few floors further up after one night and the only rats were the occasional one in the kitchen.

Worst hostel: Piratas de Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro...

Do not want... Smells like piss, hippy commune, bed bugs, one room with about 40 bunk beds, shit everywhere, open toilets next to showers... Filthy... The owners are however nice, an american bloke and a brazilian. The location is also good - everything else is shit...

In Buenos Aires I had an old german bloke start going on about Jews and Palestine to two young Israeli guys that were in the same room. Then he started on some other bullshit, quite entertaining and awkward. In Florianopolis an Australian bird was in the top bunk with a drunk English bloke. Everyones listening to them try **** but its not working out, he ends up spewing on her and on the poor polish bastard in the bunk bed below them who was asleep. The light weight englishman jumped off the bunk and ran off back to his other hostel. Quite entertaining that night, the girls friend jumped into my bed while this was happening and tried to **** me - no thanks. Aussie girls and English blokes representing their respective nations.

Awesome thread, was hoping if anyone could recommend good cheap hostels for me?

London favs so far:

Party hostels... The Generator. Any St Christopher's (Only been to Brighton one but all meant to be good, esp shepherds bush)

Relaxed Hostels: Palmers Lodge at Swiss Cottage was great but expect to pay a little extra and it is a bit further out of central London and Travel Joy at Chelsea/Pimlico. I'm currently at the White Ferry in Chelsea and it seems good too but early days.

And LOL The Emu. Although I wouldn't have resisted... after she had a shower ;)

First time I went to London I ended up staying in some Notting Hill hostel. We arrived late and went to get a bite to eat to the sound of stacks of sirens in the area. Came back to our hostel not long after to riot police fully decked out storming the place. Turns out a permanent resident of the hostel had stabbed someone in the neck around the corner.. Welcome to London!

Fly out to SE Asia tomorrow. Staying at the Reggae Mansion in Kuala Lumpur, then onto Laos (Vang Vieng & Luang Prabang), Vietnam (Hanoi, ~Sapa, ~Halong Bay, ~Hoi An, Saigon), Cambodia (Phnom Penh, somewhere on the coast - Snooky, Kampot etc, ~Battambang, Siem Reap). Any recommendations for any of these places for hostels/guesthouses? Dont want massive party places where you cant get a minutes sleep, but still want them to have some atmosphere.

Hanoi and Hue Backpackers. Both are party but I found it really easy to sleep.

You can get a 3 star hotel in Vang Vieng for $3 USD a night.

That's the one - defo the one to stay in if anyone is going to Edinburgh. Has 300 beds but doesn't feel that big at all

Staying in the Mountbatten Hostel in central Sydney sometime this year, so about to have my first experience in one... (I'm usually a hotel sort of guy..). Anyone know much about it?
