Opinion The I Was Wrong thread- Where Tom Atkins posts go to die

OK, so here's how wrong I was:

My counter-argument to paying the draft-pick price to acquire Jeremy Cameron was based around my belief - still not disproven! (ok; public apologies are hard) - that we needed to rejuvenate our list by emulating the list-building approach that formed the core of our 3-time premiership winning teams of 2007, 09 and '11.

I thought that our strong hand at the draft was our first opportunity in a long time to really make hay at the draft; my hope was that we would go back to the well again in the '21 or '22 drafts with enough strong picks to roughly replicate the net effect of the 1999 and 2001 drafts.

That was my dream.

I have always loved Jeremy Cameron as a footballer; he was exactly the type of footballer that I was resentful a phony club like the Giants could jag so blithely; a young (at the time) super-talented key forward with genuine x-factor. I know that if I looked hard enough I'd be on record as praising him on this board circa 2013.

Anyway - I didn't want to pay the price, and I have publicly argued that point on this very board.

I was wrong.

I always knew he could play, but the question was; could he deliver?
He has delivered. He didn't win us a flag off his own boot by any means.
But he has played a massive part in transforming this team.

May be just maybe the blokes at the club know exactly what the **** they are doing. They are gonna miss sometimes for sure... but not as much ass people make them out to

The fact you are listing players rather than personnel running the club...

Let's enjoy the win

I wanted Jake Kolodjashnij out of the side a mere three weeks ago. 🙈

Finals are such capstones on players careers.

1 Premiership has justified every up and down we've had with Kolo.

That's fair.
A brilliant prelim as well. A fit Kolo is an integral part of our defence for many years yet. Love him.

After 8-9 rounds this season, with losses to Hawks, Swans, Freo, and Saints, I really thought we were no better than a MIDDLE OF THE ROAD team. No way did I foresee what we have done this year,
STUNNING.
16 consecutive wins with a flag.
We have gone from that inauspicious start, to the most powerhouse team of the year, and possibly rivalling the 07 team.
Yes, I was way off.

You weren't on your Pat Malone there, Vdubs.

Played career best form when it counted.

Like many others this finals series, just playing at great levels.

I was watching Atkins at the clearances, and I could see why they preferred him over Parfitt at the centre bounces at times. Does a lot of the hard stuff behind the scene. And Parfitt is no slouch either.

Same.

I didn't think Danger could adapt his game for finals. I saw his desire to put the team on his back as a major weakness as under the increased pressure he made so many clangers, fumbles and defensive mistakes that despite decent stats he rarely had a positive impact. Huge credit to his last 2 performances. Immense on the inside, quality distribution to teammates and really good decision making. Superb and unlucky not to win the Norm Smith.

To be fair I reckon fans deserve a pass on picking the best 22 late this year. It was almost impossible to see who would miss out.

And the fringe players who were thrown up as those possibly missing out were awesome in finals. Kolo, Rohan, Miers, Zuthrie. O'Connor had a really good GF with perhaps the defining moment being that run down.

It was impossible to not leave out somebody who in hindsight made us look a bit silly especially since I don't think anyone saw Parfitt being left out.

Recruiting older players could keep the team up for this long.

im still not convinced this can be done indefinately without a massive crash. But its lasted far far longer then i thought possible.
Yep. Same with me. It was bringing in our young players and fringe that ignited out season though. Could tell change was in the air when dahlhause and Higgins were no longer getting a game.

Smith was an absolutely deserved norm winner,3 goals when the heat was on and nearly 800m gained, he was absolutely dominant. But i agree on the rest-danger was the 2nd best player on the ground and i didnt think he had that in him with where his body was at and his age-i was wrong.

I thought we paid overs for Cameron, thought Zac was a lost cause, thought Close and Atkins were just list cloggers and thought we wouldn’t see another premiership under Chris Scott.

I was wrong and I’m so happy about it
