Before anyone goes off i am not suggesting Judd should not be, he's far and away the best man for the job and hopefully has a good few years left.
Looking to the future though, which of the current team is our next long term leader? In most cases i've subscribed to the best player being captain but the best players haven't always had leadership qualities. I think Murph could develop into that role but not quite there yet. Maybe Jammo, but his body is a concern. Is it even someone who has not even played senior football yet? Keen to read people's thoughts.

This topic pops up from time to time and my answer doesn't change.

Simmo.

To me he seems a fantastic candidate to lead the Carlton Football Club. Incredibly consistent footballer who gives it his all each time he takes to the field. A fantastic role model for younger guys coming through the system.

Having said that, I think the honour will remain with Judd for a few more years yet, by which time Simmo may be too old to take over.

In that case I think Murph would be a fantastic option. Jamo not out of the question, but age may be an issue.

Goddard?

Gibbs doesn't strike me as captaincy material at this stage.

Kreuzer would be far more likely, I think.

Kreuzer is a great idea. He definatly leads by example. Works his ass off and is very professional.

We have to remember he is still very young, but if he can develop his leadership over the next few years while Judd is in charge he would make a great captain.

That we have so many choices is so encouraging!

Wasn't so long ago that we brought Gibbs into the leadership group in his first year at the club!

From the more experienced guys, Simmo. Every time the team is down this guy stands up.

From the younger guys, take your pick from Murph, Gibbs, Kreuz, Laidler, Hendo. Now that I think about it, Laidler would make a great captain in 3-4 years.

Love Jamo too, but he misses so much footy. Captain needs to be durable.

Think atm Simmo and Jamo would be the key options.

However by the time judd gives it up they will be to old, at which time i think Murph will be the leading candidate, with Krueze and Gibbs behind.

If Gibbs learns how to actually get his hands dirty then mabye, but i think Murphy will be as he leads by example each week.

Don't think there are any great options at present.

Gibbs would want to develop some presence before he is considered.

Laidler would be as good as any in a couple of years time. Latest injury aside, he's reliable, dependable, courageous. Could develop into a great leader.

Jamo is only a year older than Murph, so shouldn't be counted out because of age, but I agree with those who are backing Gibbs for the job.

Despite the fact he hasn't taken many games by the scruff of the neck just yet, Gibbs comes across as more of a leader than Murph & as we have seen in recent years, a premiership captain isn't necessarily the best performed, or most talented player on the list (that is not a knock on Gibbs' talent, but there are at least a couple of players on the list who are more talented than Gibbs).

Murphy in time (When Judd wants to relinquish it), Simmo if Juddy misses a game now.

Simmo i thought did a very good job a few years back towards the end of a season.

Jamo just isn't on the park enough.

Surprised at those suggesting Gibbs, Just doesn't strike me as a leader atm.....seems a little stuck in 2nd gear to me.

I guess that rules out Collins from being captain.

Kruezer will never be captain, he is far to shy. He just does whats asked of him and is great at it.

I see terrific leadership qualities in Kreuzer and his shyness (borne from humility over genuine reservation IMO) might be lessened the more senior a player he becomes within the group. If Judd remains for a few years, I reckon a 25yo Kreuzer could just about be the perfect fit. Nonetheless I'm enthused to wait for the outcome and enjoy watching Judd for a few more years.
