That's rubbish then. If I wanted to watch someone have affair after affair, I'd tune into the Kardashians.

The advertising industry in the 60's and early 70's was very interesting. Even in the show, when they discuss business, I'm completely tuned in. When I watch his daughter catching him having his 16th affair, I zone out.
The shows need their characters to have personal lives though to help complicate things and make it exciting. There's no point if he just goes to work and thats the only issues he may contend with. That's life and what makes it realistic.

Sure but I completely agree with Jatz and it's why I didn't last beyond S01. The show was far too disjointed and episodic and it got boring watching him with the bimbo of the week.

No problem with a personal life, just a problem when that's the overbearing theme through the season. Especially when it's been multiple seasons in a row.

The work part of it was what made it so interesting to me. He still has a character with personal issues at work of course.

Disagree. It's an incredible character study of times back then and how the world began to chance after the War. It was about the sexual awakening of America, the move to racial equality, the two-steps-forward-one-step-back march of women's liberation. It was about women's struggle to be taken seriously in a man's world and how the men who used to own that world were now suddenly not in as much control as they were and it was a shock to the system. Some adapted, some didn't. Don was that guy who used to be on top but had to change his spots and fit into this new world. It's absolutely fantastic and got better and better as it went on.

Hm if you say so. I love American history so so much, and was so excited in the pilot with the mentions of the Kennedy campaign. I figured the first season might follow their advertising for Nixon and weave in some great narrative and context of the time. Instead I got episode after episode of them smoking, drinking, and ****ing.

You can dress it up however you want, but it was bland and formulaic.

Fair enough, it's certainly got worse and worse for me. They could have incorporated what you talk about through the work (and they did to an extent with Peggy and Joan) view.

The constant affairs isn't fun to watch and it's not why I was interested in the show. It'd be alright if it was every now and then but it's just constant. Really struggling to make it through to end of the show tbh. Which is annoying as I'm really interested in the joint venture business they've put together.

I do think it was better earlier but by the 6th season, it's same smoking/drinking and a different woman.

Surely they could shift the focus somewhat. That storyline didn't move at all so far in 6 seasons. It's just boring to me.

Thing is, you really need to finish watching it. I don't want to spoil anything but it's not like you say it all is. Remember, people very rarely change no matter how hard they try.

Speaking of Kennedy, anyone been watching 11.22.63? Brilliant show.
Was actually about to mention it. Finished Ep 4 yesterday. Franco is great in this. However, many of Stephen King's work starts off well before it fades away with the ending when it gets adapted.

Well I'm currently watching season 6. But fast forwarding through the shit that isn't work or other cast related. I'm sick of seeing which new chick Don's decided he must have.

Probably another unpopular opinion but I wish they'd written Betty out of the show. That side of it all seems irrelevant as well (outside of his children - but then I don't think they should really have been a focus anyway).

Finished episode 5 the other night and still loving it. Only 8 episodes in total so as long as the conclusion is great then I can't see my opinion fading off it too much from here.

Yeah I'm not saying that the story itself will suffer just how it gets adapted to screen, although so far so good!

I agree but Betty was still a part of Don's life. If you divorce the mother of your children, you will still have to have some sort of relationship no matter how strained that is for the benefit of your kids.

I'll still disagree with you however! I'm a big fan of relationships being fleshed out for character development and depth. Different tastes it seems!

Yeah I get irl she wouldn't disappear, it's just the story line seems a bit meh.

Yeah fair enough. I think something like the Sopranos did it well. Yes he was unfaithful and had affairs, which they showed, but it didn't take away from the rest of the story/character development.

I'm up to episode five now and have been very happy with what I've seen thus far, this is the first time in a while that I've actually enjoyed a Franco performance too.

Have you read the book?

Nah I haven't. The Filth Wizard was telling me I need to read it, so I should get around to it soon. I've almost finished my Sherlock Holmes collection so I'll be looking for something to read.

It's funny how Mad Men seems to be splitting opinions.

Betty was so important in his life though. The final season and the final episodes and what happens with the two of them and the scenes they have together are crazy good.
