The reduction has come about as a result of competition being introduced to the market

My latest power bill is $575 and that's pretty good for this time of the year. It's all relative though - I have five adults living here with a pool pump that runs for about 6hrs a day, two fridges, 2 aircons, 5 televisions and all the other appliances that go with 5 people living in a house. Power is cheap in WA so I have no intention of having a whinge but I do feel for people who don't have the same level of income we do and that utility bills are a constant source of pain

Water on average around $350 and I'm always amused when the water authority tells me that I'm using more than others that live in the area - considering on either side of me are single person homes, I'm not surprised.

Power has always been better than the eastern states. But yeah, in summer I have the aircon, pool pump, two fridges,, three adults and two kids. Bill tops $600 a couple of times, which hurts, but it could certainly be worse.

600$ power bills says to me you should really be forking out for a solar system, probably pay itself back in 5 years easy and really dent to spikey summer bills down. Even in winter here you still get a decent chuck of power out of them.

24c/kWh x 6 hrs per day x 365 days a year = about $400 p.a. assuming a 1 hp pump. A 5kW air con running for 4 hours a day for 3 months is about the same.

Pool pumps and air cons are strong arguments for solar.

My BIL owns a solar hart business and my nephew works for solar hart as an engineer and we've crunched the numbers and seeing as our kids are now adults and moving out and the likelihood of us downsizing, it's not a viable option

Have people who travel around Australia a bit noticed Perth prices being a bit more reasonable these days?

Over the last year we've had 0.8% inflation, while every other capital city (except Darwin) have had around 2%.

Also, apparently rents here fell 16.3% over 2017. That's just wild. If you're not from WA don't move here though. We don't have enough jobs to go around.

Can confirm. I've never been in a market before where prospective tenants routinely 'make an offer' invariably lower than what you're asking and existing tenants are able to negotiate decreases in their rent as a matter of course when due for renewal. Thankfully that period seems to be more or less over now.

I live with one of my best mates who also happens to be my landlord. It could be an awkward dinner tonight when I ask for a reduction in rent.

**** that. In Melbourne you generally have to offer a bit more, first month in advance and bond and generally be a bit over the top and offer an extra 50 a week if it's a decent place in a good area and looking a bit hot on inspection day.

As for prices I'd say other cities are just charging more in CBD areas. Would say 10 flat a pint in the city anywhere is slightly optimistic.

You gotta be a bit discerning, stumble in and get some luck, or know people to find a good pub with a good happy hour. Then again I'd rather pay 10 a pint for some Coopers and sit in a nice looking pub with some open windows, decent staff, good food, and no ****heads than go to the Vic and wait 15 minutes for a stressed 18-year old to pour you a half assed Swan Draught while you struggle to actually find a place to sit. I think if you want to save money then drinking at pubs isn't really a smart thing... I mean you can sit in a nice park and have beers.

$8 pints at Left Bank on Sundays is a better alternative. Nice place to have a beer as well.

Being from SA (and old) I was so use to being able to have a glass of wine at a picnic or a beach, walking to the shops with a beer and even drinking a beer whilst driving on a hot summers day.

I was pulled over by the cops at a breathalyser and they asked if I had anything to drink and how much. I simply held up the stubbie three quarters full and they had a heart attack. I don't know if the rules have changed now in SA but the drink driving laws were based on blood alcohol % and not the concept if "actual" have a drink whilst driving.

I've been asked to tip out our beers by cops walking from home into Northbridge but lucky enough not to be fined. However, how nuts is it that you can't enjoy a drink whilst walking with mates to the pub? Seriously, what is the worst that can happen other than tripping and cutting one's self? The reality is, this is an anticoon law. Yes I wrote a racist term but is is intended on highlighting the mentality of the state, behind the law, rather than expressing a dispersion on our indigenous friends.

I've never personally known anyone get done for street drinking, I think if you aren't being a dick head you are generally alright, they just make you pour it out. If you were say walking your dog at the park drinking a stubby at 4pm on a Saturday arvo quietly minding you own business very few cops I think would even care.

I bet they would if they saw you were clearly drinking alcohol no matter how much you were quietly minding your own business.

But having said that, what's the deal with picnics at Kings Park or Point Walter for example? Isn't that street drinking too technically?

Nah, sure maybe if they walked straight past you but they wouldn't stop the car, jump out and run 50m over and back to someone not causing trouble, they either got something better to do or too lazy.
