From memory there's a long stretch of road on William Street coming south back towards the city, might be the reason.

On a side note that area is like another Chinatown also with lots of Asian restaurants.

There’s always drags from Brisbane to Newcastle street to see whose in front where one lane continues and the other is a turn right into Newcastle. That section just near the ice baths is where I think the right arrows starts so they might have been trying to cross lanes

I think I've been to 3 of 6.

Varnish on King is a whisky bar. They do a whisky and bacon sampler if that's your bag. If not, there's nothing remarkable about it.
Bobeche has $7 pints during happy hour 5-6pm. And they have free popcorn. Other than that again nothing particularly remarkable. Sort of place that will be busy until about 7 or so on a Friday then quieten down. Pretty sure once the clock strikes 6 the pints double to $14.
Petition isn't cheap but they have a range of actual craft beers on tap if that's your thing. The wine corner bit is OK but is basically just a bunch of wine racks and some tables to sit and drink wine. Haven't had a meal at the kitchen bit.

I feel like bars in Perth just lack a vibe or something. Maybe it's because only 19 and 20 year olds have the expendable income and energy to stay out until 3am and get a cab over 50 bucks back home, but it seems a bit 'let's go to this place before an event...' vibe more than a 'Friday after work catch up that's still going at 10:30' vibe. I dunno. I think a lot of people have a good intention to patronise venues, heaps of people try them and everyone wants them to succeed, but it's a pain in the arse for the majority of people to get into Northbridge – it's not cheap in an uber or quick on public transport, they all close at ****in midnight, and you're at a 'cocktail bar' and spending $15 on a drink or $9 on some beer that you feel lucky to have because it's a 'cocktail bar' but it's a ****in lager in a 330ml stubbie.

It's why they need the inner areas like East Perth and Subiaco to be really vibrant and full of more people. As it is the typical suburbanite just can't be ****ed. And the idea of $14 pint after $24 cocktail isn't really appealling.

If places like the Vic can put out $3.50 pints and make money I have no ****ing sympathy for any bar selling 12$ pints of Swan Draught and not getting any patrons.

I actually get what you mean though.. I can't think of too many places that make me want to go "let's go here after work for a few bevvies" . Belgian Beer Cafe kind of has that vibe, but not in Northbridge and ****ing expensive

But there's a shit tonne of pop up bars and areas like that everywhere in Perth that are also pretty heavily visited. Seems like they're taking over

Those pop up bars are just more of the same, they're ultimately unsustainable. I went to one of those trendy ones for 18-22 year olds this summer and it was packed but it was a place for kids to drink that half felt like a music festival and was essentially a place to tag into on Instagram. Not really a business model.

An average beer (let's say Coopers Pale Ale – not your Draught or Swan but a staple) is about $350-450 a keg. Keg is just under 50 litres. Let's say 50 litres and 400 bucks... it's half a litre in a pint (almost) so it's 100 pints. So you're breaking even on 4 bucks a pint but from there you actually have to pay someone to deliver your kegs, you need to pay your staff, you also have kitchen staff who are a lot harder to knock off earlier, and you have bills and the worst thing about restaurants and venues is the little overheads: glassware, steamers, toilet paper, maintaining a decent decor and replacing chairs etc. On average that knocks the price up to let's say $6.50 and that's just to pay your staff, keep the place open, and have it presentable. Then you know, you need to actually make a profit. Ultimately you want 2 bucks a pint at least.

Although most venues don't need to be shipping what they do for how much they do, there is a reason most pubs won't do $3.50 pints.

The flow on effect is your margins are even smaller yet your clientele gets bigger... you need more staff and you're making less money. These venues rely on food and stuff but I'm sure if it's bumper to bumper, nobody is going to bother getting a steak because there's no room for it. I also don't personally want to go to a really really busy pub on a Friday night where I'm lining up for ages and drinking sugary muck like Swan Draught or mid strength Rogers, and then putting up with the young punks and the outer suburban blow ins from outer suburbs who have heard about the cheap grog. I haven't been to the Vic, and maybe it's actually good fun on a Thursday night and operates like a real student haunt (can someone tell me?) but ultimately if you want to drink beers and want to be a tight arse about it, then going out isn't really for you – get a carton and sit at someone's house. It's nearly footy season, go sit in front of the tv and do that.
