I was working in the city today. Cops were absolutely loving it, acting like it was 9/11.

Good getting paid for an hour and a half of nothing though.

Wow thought it was our turn for terrorism just before, false alarm it seems.
I strolled past on my lunch break and was amazed how many people were trying to get closer to get a better look.

People really need training on the difference between a suspicious package and an abandoned piece of junk.

I have seen the over reaction and panic time and time again.

There are signs for a real bomb, oil or chemical stains, strange wording on the box with no return address, strange smells, the container or bag placed in a location no one would would accidently leave it, sounds within the package and so one.

Or my favorite, when you kick it it does not explode.

Yeah, just lean into the package and if theres no ticking sounds theres no bomb. Or if theres a wire then follow it and you might find a TNT detonator being operated by a coyote.

They just can’t win can they. Do the right thing and evacuate the area and they cop criticism. Ignore it and it explodes, why did they just ignore it.

It’s a good practice run I suppose and I’d be interested to know how they went in clearing and shutting the area down

I can't remember the last time I watched the news or read a paper, it's all bullshit.

Yeah, even if the news is interesting or relevant (about 0.0001% of the time) the article will be written or presented in a very annoying way. I just scroll through twitter so i don't miss any big news. 90% of articles seem to be composed of tweets anyway.

Sounds like the 'journo' wasn't happy with that angle so kept digging until they got something a bit more sensationalist..

Yeah I guess there is that. Makes it song like the 'locals' are sticking their arms through the windows like something from a zombie film.

What the hell is wrong with saying disabled child? ffs this is why the news is best avoided and I hate you for making me aware of this.
You're defining the child by the disability, like that is the most important thing about them, rather than just one feature of them. I understand why it upsets people with disability and people in the media are given advice on better terms to use. Given the organisation he was working with, it's just a bit insensitive, but it's not newsworthy.

No you're not.

Yeah I dunno about that. Seems like unnecessary pedantry from the Helen Lovejoys of the world.
Maybe, but it probably makes a difference to someone with a disability. Words do matter, and saying someone is disabled first and a child second rather than a child with a disability, is a small but significant difference. I thought at first that it was not that important a definition, but I also realised that it's no skin off my nose to choose the other phrase and if it makes someone feel better, what's the problem.
