I think this will basically tell the building industry to not use Chinese materials. Even the aviation industry has completely avoided any parts coming from China due to the low quality of it.

A lot of building products coming in from China because it's cheap. And crap

The building industry is self regulated in a lot of ways now and this gives leeway for some builders to cut corners to save costs - the Building Code and Australian Standards are quite rigorous to comply with but when a building license is issued the builder basically signs off saying that they will comply with the standards and again once the building is complete that they have complied.

Problem is no one really checks during construction that things have been done properly - for example houses are rated 6 stars for energy efficiency by a certifier who looks at the plans and materials being used plugs them all into a program that spits out a star rating. The assumption is that the materials are installed in accordance with manufacturers recommendations but no one makes sure this is done or works out what happens when there is a conflict in two recommendations so that one or the other can't be done correctly. Building inspections by councils stopped happening ages ago due to concerns that they could be sued for signing off on buildings that were defective - by not inspecting they don't warrant the building is OK

So with this asbestos thing - the standards are in place to say asbestos can't be used, everyone signs off that it won't/hasn't been used but no one necessarily checks it. Manufacturers in Australia wouldn't get away with using asbestos because someone would kick up a stink but in China they don't give a ****

Theres a type of glue used in the board for Kitchen cabinets that is banned in Australia because it's toxic when it burns so all the board bought in Australia doesn't contain it. I was once told by someone who would now that the kitchens supplied by a particular large hardware chain are imported from China as furniture and as such don't have to comply with the same standard so do contain the banned glue. Now I'm not certain that is true and is was a few years ago now so may no longer be the case, but it's the sort of problem you risk using materials imported from China

Speaking of which, who else knows the trick to spotting old HardwareHouse stores?

Trick? Like the big balls on the roof?

I've got a Chinese car that had asbestos in the brake linings or some shit like that.

Asbestos was a common brake pad material for years but was banned in 2004.

It's actually a pretty harmless material, it's just when the fibres are exposed that it's an issue. MDF can be nasty stuff but people don't think twice about having it in their homes.

I hate working with Gyprock/Plaster and any Hardi product, I always get a nice cough going if I do

I thought that the rubber and cotton stuff on tracks that often almost falls apart in your hands was a bit older than that..

Huh? Yeah it is... I said 60s wiring is usually a rewire. Not ALL 60s wiring is cotton train tracks but it's still most the time that koony old cable with shiddy insulation that practically crumbles in your hands as well.

I like rewires tbh, yeah it's physical work but it's great pay. If you have a team of 2-3 people you can smash one out in a day.

It's hosing down right now, me and a mate of mine were thinking of going down to Cottesloe to watch Wests v Cott in rugby union today.

Thank god we called that off and thank god I'm not still playing, I would have faked a hammy injury and stayed in the clubrooms drinking booze.

It's still raining solidly here and at Cottesloe it would be worse, their rugby ground overlooks the Cottesloe golf course right on the coast.

I've played in conditions like this there and it's a nightmare with the wind and rain, no protection there whatsoever.
