Last year the Kangaroos and Eagles both had 5 and 6 close losses (within two goals), respectively. This year they've jumped six places up the ladder.

Haven't double checked these numbers but since the bye we have averaged 98 points for and 88 points against giving us a % of 112.

If we keep up our attack for the rest of the year we are on track to have points for in the top 8 of the competition. We are way ahead of teams around us and will probably finish the round having scored more than Sydney and already ahead of Power and Crows and are within a few goals of Eagles and Bombers.

The dynamic duo and their growing influence in games.

Berry 28 disposals
McCluggage 26 and 3 goals

There was one passage where Berry blindly booted a ball off the ground and it pinged straight to McCluggage 30 metres away.

Those two have some serious mystical synergy.

To kick that score with limited input from our tall forwards is a big step I think.
All our wins so far have been against teams with small or depleted defences. Even though Hipwood and McStay were not influential, the team was still able to find other avenues. The game against hawthorn showed we could win through contested ball and this game should give everyone more confidence we are able to match it against those big, mature backlines too.

I know it's the positive thread but I am quite pissed off with the negativity with our boys with our losses. C'mon people wake up and see the trees for the forest as we are coming. Don't care about Rayner's miss, first year player he will learn and watch out in a few years. McCluggage and Berry are awesome, 2nd year players for crying out loud. Hate losing but we are so close. I'm proud of our team and being a lions supporter.

Everyone is proud of them. Realistically it is probably like 1% that don't see it. The negativity is just people disappointed after a loss which is normal. Give it a couple hours and people are more rationale. I am really proud of them as well and l reckon we can make the finals next year if we get a good draw and have minimal injuries again.

Our focus has been on the players in the seniors and rightly so. However if we look at the bigger picture and take a glance at the reserves yesterday we will see some really, really serious talent being developed. Not so much the result of the game but the glimpse of what is the future. It is unfortunate for Wooler he missed so much of the season but in just a few weeks in the reserves he has shown qualities that would demand serious consideration for a senior spot.
Hinge's time for promotion is coming sooner than later. Maybe Fagan will make a statement this week and send a message that a performance like Rich's is no longer acceptable and an ideal replacement would be Hinge. (excluding Claye Beams) Bailey showed class and a small forward role is his for the taking.
Balenden is another, he is ready to taste senior football. I can list another three or four but the benchmark performance for what is required for senior elevation has been lifted significantly under Fagan. If we don't get ahead of ourselves as a club the future is looking bright.

One of the trademarks of really good teams over the years is even when they’re not playing well, they still manage to keep the scoreboard ticking over enough to stay in games. Thought we were awful at times yesterday and had many players down (if not statistically, then in effectiveness), yet still nearly managed to pull off a win against a pretty fair side.

Trademark of Hawks at their height, didnt always dominate games, but managed to kick those few goals against the flow to keep in touch. Then when they get their chance they could punish teams and pile on 6-8 goals. Very much see us learning a similar style, controlling tempo when needed.

We still go too fast at times, but we are learning. We started to control the ball more in the 2nd half, kicking backwards and just maintaining possession. Helps to unsettle structures and just deny the footy a bit. You can build your game back from there and i thought we did.

Has been a heap of times this season where we have done this and it has kept us in games, where in past seasons we would get blown away.
