lol wut you were edge?

Yeah for about 2 years. I was vegan for 5 years also. I was an idealist who naively thought I could change the world. What an idiot. I'm much wiser now. I stopped when I realised that I was angry all the time, I'd developed a massively elitist attitude (which is common amongst edgers) and I just needed to chill out.

It was a good time for Adelaide Hardcore i reckon, those late 90s-early 00s. Throw in Wheres The Pope? who were probably the best of the lot, shotpointblank, a tribe is calling, inspite. Im sure im overlooking a dozen others.

Force Fed 9, Enemy Of, Slackjaw, Keith, St Alban's Kids, Love Like Electrocution, Testeagles (lol). Good times, good times.

You still think you are better than everyone else.

You always look down on me like I am a street urchin.

Just having a look on my iPhone for some current Australian music. Only have Grinderman and Tame Impala. Also liked The Cops when they were around.

Bullshit. You think I'm looking down on you when in reality I am gazing lovingly with a heart full of adoration. Plus you are shorter than me.

So now I am ****ing shorter than you?!

Talk about attitude

Yeah, don't. Unless you are a Zen master. You'd miss the benny classics too much (****en classics, still recovering from that silly decision!)

True story. I have been "straight edge" since I became aware of the whole thing in the mid-1980's. It wasn't something I sought to be, it was just the way I was. So when I found out about it I kind of adopted the tag. Others labeled me "straight edge" anyway and I just ran with it. I do not identify with the 90's mutation of straight edge though in any way, shape or form. I've never preached anything to anyone and most of my friends were **** ups. I just didn't drink or take drugs. It was just something that stuck. I was more of the "I hate the drunken footy player types I grew up with so much that I wanted to be the complete opposite of what they were" type.

WTF is 'straight edge' - is that a modern word for 'normal'?

Rip out his still-beating heart and lift it victoriously over his corpse?

Nah I was thinking more skull ****ing. But that will do.

This is awesome. Thanks for sharing. The bolded bit is the exact reason I came to the same conclusion. Growing up in the country I was surrounded by stupid footy playing jocks who would give you worlds of shit if you weren't exactly like them. I hated it, their ignorance and stubborn refusal to accept anything outside of their world was suffocating. I've only just gotten over being mad about that, actually.

Shouldn't you have waited until a major post milestone to tell us this?

Ok, it was a kind of sub movement that came out of the 1980's punk rock/hardcore scene in the US, more specifically, Washington DC. It sprang from a song by the band Minor Threat titled "straight edge" where singer Ian Mackaye put forward the idea of living a life free of alcohol and drugs particularly. At the time the US hardcore scene had a lot of random alcohol fueled violence and it was kind of a reaction to that in a lot of ways.

It quickly turned from a local, personal choice thing into something of a movement, first US-wide, then internationally. Since the 1980's Mackaye has disassociated himself from the straight edge "movement" due to it becoming very much the very thing he was rebelling against - ie, a preachy, angry, jock mentality boys club.

That's very much a condensed version. There's no doubt many resources on the web if you REALLY want to read up about it. I really don't have the time right at the moment as its my lunch break and I need to eat :)

Never knew if you drank or what Morrison,

Always thought you were 'straight edge' so I snuck small volumes of vodka into your salad sandwiches at the footy. <3

I like the idea of it but I could never do it. I just really, really like beer.

It's never been a big deal for me. I've just never felt tempted. I guess my choice was helped along when I smashed a bottle of Jacobs Creek claret from my friends dads booze cupboard in about half an hour back when I was 15. Was passed out and vomiting all over myself, woke up the next day and swore I'd never touch a drop again. All these years later I've managed to remain true to my word.

Dont worry, Jacobs Creek has that effect on most people that drink it.

I think people are making all these confessions because we feel more likely to be discriminated against for being a Port fan; anything else is almost socially acceptable by comparison.

I've felt for a while now that being a Port supporter is being a part of a vilified minority group.

Rising Star/Dangerfield Brownlow/Premiership treble. Can anyone think of anything worse?
