Playing Michael Angelo Batio vids for the kids

Anyone else grow up on Speed Kills?

Was that the instructional video?

If that is the instructional video let me say that having it (briefly) was a mostly pointless exercise for me.

So as expected, the initial tasks being performed were not computer programming - and as a result they required skilled 'nerds' rather than admin/data input types. The the underlying issue was a lack of understanding of the skill set required rather than a gender issue.

Salaries went up because of the training and skills required.
Um... No.

The issue was the employers thought it was easy work so hired women to look better and pay less, and it was actually complex work that they performed the whole time.

I think.

Actually it appears everyone is wrong and everyone is right. Further googling and wiki-ing the history of the ENIAC machine indicates 6 women were chosen - not because they were good at data entry, but because they were from a pool of mathematicians suited to solving complex problems during the war years although peers considered the task clerical and that the task of designing the machine was the real challenge- so they weren't given the credit deserved of them.

There's no mention of salaries but I'm guessing wartime salaries were pretty average.

When I was younger, I was working as an apprentice at Manuele Engineering (now defunct, sadly. Great place to work and the manuele family were excellent bosses). We had a solid week of 40+ days, and we were all wearing boiler suits in big sheds that had no aircon or fans. I remember trying to mark steel with chalk and my sweat was literally pouring in a stream off the end of my nose and washing away the chalk markings.

Awful week that was, I actually slept on the cold kitchen tiles one night even though we had air con.

Now I work in a climate controlled office :thumbsu:. I know what it's like for tradies though since I've been on both sides. It's tough.

I left just before the move - changed my career, but Vince made a point of watching to catch up with me before I left. I was just a lowly young apprentice and he cared about my future direction which was amazing from someone in his position.

I knew they were going to be in strife moving forward. There was endless work completed by them for oxiana/prominent hill that was just sitting in the yard as the environmental impact studies were going on. Then a lot of it got canned. Horrendous. They were always going to be chasing tail after that.

Vic Manuele was a hard taskmaster though!

My brother is a fiberglasser and he's worked in a tank in a moisture impermeable suits with full face respirators in 60ºC for 12 hours albeit in 20 minute shifts with 20 minute cooldown, he lost 15kg in sweat. I was a mine site about 500kms out of Mt Isa where that day was 53ºC in the shade.

Vince is a very smart man.

Structural game is so cut throat.

I worked on a few projects over the years.... Holdens, RAAF shelter, Adelaide Airport and the Glass Furnace.

Yep, he wound the business up as he read the market and didn't hold on too long. Smart move.

The first time I watched Mulholland Drive I fell asleep in the middle, woke up with about 30 mins to go and thought WTF happened.
I've since watched it probably 10 times fully conscious with the same reaction.
It's a masterpiece.

I think it's good and so is Lost Highway too. Inland Empire bored me to death and I turned it off halfway through.

Not that I want to get in the way of something that two men have agreed on without looking into it, I think maybe you should read this whole article. If it helps, its partly based on a speech given by a man.
".... [the women] were charged with “setting up” the ENIAC to perform computation tasks. They are widely celebrated as the world’s first computer programmers."

They may be "widely celebrated" but they were computer operators not programmers.
