Toast The Roos Effect - A Rooserrection

One of the best things about today's win was the players who really made it possible. Blokes like Grimes, Frawley and McKenzie had their best games for us in a while.

But even more importantly Bail, Pedersen, Spencer and co have been fantastic this year. Guys that most on here (including myself) would have delisted have really stood up. It's something Roos has a history of doing too, getting the most of players like Mattner and Josh Kennedy that had stagnated and/or declined in their careers, making them if not into superstars, serviceable best 22 players that could play as the bottom 6 in a grand final side.

Obviously the blokes above are far way from that, but can Roos manage to get more improvement from those players that have suffered from our poor development systems in the last 7 years? It'll be really interesting to see what Strauss, Blease and Tapscott - who are probably the epitome of how bad Melbourne have been with player development recently - produce when they come back.

I've seen improvement in many of our players (even in our losses).

Give Roos another pre-season...maybe two. He was the most sought after coach for a reason.

Im curious how you feel vince has been for you so far. Early in his career he reportedly had the talent to win a brownlow but not the focus or determination. A couple of our older guys sat him down (goodwin and ricciuto from memory) and he had a few great years but then slowly went back to being good for us. Frustrating at times. I wish him well and hope he finishes out his career in the style hes capable, just curious how you feel hes fitting into the new club and structure.

I really like him, he has played well in the 3 games he has played for us, looks like he is out there with something to prove? Maybe not happy with Adelaide putting him on the table. At the end of the day he is out replacement for Sylvia....and TBH is see Bernie as an upgrade.

He's been great for us so far, really decent mark, booming kick, just the type of player we needed right now. I do agree though, seems like the type of guy who could've been a genuine A grader, but perhaps just hasn't done the things that the best players do. I love him though.

Agree that Roos is great at finding a role for every player in his team, simplistic approach that works as everyone is cog in the system that makes it work correctly, players just have to do their role, nothing else, and if you do your role under Roos' system you can become an AFL star even though your skills set and athetlic ability say youre not (see Brett Kirk).

Long, long, long, long, long, long, long way to go until we can even think of those levels and no doubt we will all be calling for Bail and Pedo's head next week. But as i mentioned in another thread and as Roos also mentioned in his press conference today, if the effort is there for 4 quarters i dont care about wins or losses, the wins will take care of themselves as we build the list up and get some more quality players in and cut the ones who refuse to give that effort on a weekly basis. Looked great today but the players have got to back up again and again and again and again if they want a career and a respectable (forget successful) football club . Roos can only do so much, players need to want it every week.

From what I understand sanderson wanted to be able to trade into the pointy end of the draft after our tippett sanctions and we wouldve liked to keep vince but he happened to be the best value for us to trade. Combination of injuries and general attrition has seen us field teams in the bottom 4 of the comp in terms of total games played by the 22 this season. We have a good core with dangerfield, the crouches, talia, walker, and others but by the time theyre maturing and we'll (hopefully) be ready for a crack at a premiership bernie would be too old. I dont blame him if hes unhappy about being moved on, and reportedly that is one of the issues the playing group is having with the coach which is seeing us going from 5 points off a gf in 2012 to me not being sure who to tip when we play st kilda with largely the same (now more experienced) list

This is just a first of many steps, good to see the guys get a little taste of their work thus far, hopefully today makes them wanting it more

Yep... I'l put my hand up and say that i wanted watts and pedo dropped this week but they played great games today... Was good to see them get reward for effort today... Hopefully we can back it up next week. Effort ^ confidence ^ hopefully skills ^:rainbow:

Hadn't watched you this year till yesterday but I thought this looks like a Paul Roos coached team. I thought Jones on Murphy was brilliant. 22 players on the field giving all they've got.

It's easy to say they had more scoring shots but where were they were kicking from? Inaccuracy costs games but when it is caused by pressure or perceived pressure, all credit to the winning team. (NB "pressure or perceived pressure" - Paul Roos effect?)

:thumbsu:Looked like roos has found the Melbourne switch and flicked it to on. After all these years it must have been covered in grime and hard to find. That looked like the most switched on Melbourne team I've watched in years.

This is spot on and probably the biggest thing he's brought to the team. Every player has a role and yesterday everyone played theirs well. Watts isn't being swung from one end to the other every 5 minutes. He's given the guys the chance to settle into a position and stay there which should really help their confidence and let them build up some form. I think only Pedo was moved around yesterday position wise, everyone else stayed in a fairly set role. This should help the players build their confidence as they'll know exactly what their job is and also lets the coaches know who can work for the team and who can't.
It is only one win though and we can't get too carried away by it. We need to see it regularly to say it's really sinking in and having a substantial effect on the players, although the early signs are promising.

I actually think Watts was swung around heaps yesterday, from deep forward to the wing to deep forward to the centre, etc.

Not that it's a bad thing as we need that done for team structure atm.

And Jack responded pretty well - his defensive pressure was great even if he wasn't getting his hands on the ball. Struggled a bit to work his way into the game offensively, perhaps because he was being swung around, but he still had an impact.

I've been VERY impressed by Jacks effort around tackles over the past couple of games. Watching him try dump a dude is fun to watch. Maybe he's been reading my posts? :P If he keeps that up, he'll get more of the pill, if he's got the ball, it's all good!!!

Yeh he went for some tackles yesterday, and he also went in and won his own footy a couple of times as well rather than just waiting for it to come out, good signs.

Yeah, that's a good thing for team structure and also for him as a player. If he can't handle playing forward at times he will never be a great player. Even though we know he can't hold down a permanent talk forward spot, he still has a role to play down there - especially until either Howe or Hogan are down there as marking targets.

He spent most of the game in the forward half though and was rotating around with Dawes and Frawley as the deep target and the leadup target on the wings. I thought his role seemed more defined.

First time we've beaten a Victorian team that isn't Essendon/Richmond/Dogs since Round 22 2007 and lowest score we've conceded in god knows how long (Think it might be the Essendon game from 2012?).

Crazy when you think about it. Also be funny if this current Carlton era starts and ends with a loss to Melbourne.

Gosh I wish we'd beaten St Kilda, would have been nice to break that streak. Unfortunately we don't play them again this year. I'd love to beat North but I can't see that happening. Same with Geelong and Hawthorn. For the first time in ages we're playing North at the MCG though, so who knows. We could be a chance against Collingwood, that'd be so sweet.

Lol last week I was certain we would go 0-22

Lets way an see how we go next week , if they put up a good show then we can start to believe that Roos is turning this ship, however this group has nailed opposition it thought it could beat before and then burned us the next week

As well as a seemed ability to get the best out of individual players, I thought his game day coaching was just excellent on Sunday.

Frawley up forward with Dawes and Watts in the first quarter was a master stroke. It took a lot of heat and attention away from Dawes in his first start, and it also gave us several big options to kick at - which was obviously our biggest issue in the first 3 rounds.

I loved the comments from Roos in the post-match press conference about when Murphy dragged Nate Jones into the Blues' forward line and whether our coaches thought it was a good or a bad thing to leave him there. Thoughtful, considered strategic decision making. May there be more of it! :rainbow:

Its a beautiful thing having midfield depth, theres not a chance in hell that Jones could go back last year
