I can understand the attraction to Melbourne, its an amazing city, always buzzing - attractive spot for all the hipster pseudo footballers types who like to be seen out and about etc. Perth, even though it's changing, has never been on the same level as Melbourne and probably never will be.

However, having football training in the cold weather?! Surely you'd have to get sick of that.

The real lure shouldn't be just Perth IMO but our South West region which is in my biased opinion the best region in the country.

Yeah but it's not like they can just pop down there after training during the footy season and even in the off season they go back home so it's not much of a lure.

I agree though, great spot.

Melbourne receive pick 3 compensation for Frawley, confirmed by the AFL

Not sure how the system works. Hawks given pick 17 or something last year for Buddy, Melb get pick 3 for Frawls

They need a proper system in place rather then just picking a number and running with it or is there a system in place I don't know about?

Hahhahaha.

The AFL never cease to amaze me. Now in defence of the monkey's running that place, I'm not totally across the contract terms given to Frawley, but unless it's 800K a year for 4+ years, then there is no way I can work out they can categorise him as a top bracket FA (like Franklin last year) which is what they've done. Keeping in mind the AFL expressly said when setting up the compo system:

* Not designed to fully compensate a club for the loss of a player

* Not designed to make concession for the ladder position of a club losing a player, but standardise compensation across five categories of picks.

Once again, they're making it up as they go along, no wonder fans get frustrated with those buffoons.

I have lived in Perth for quite a while, and Melbourne and Germany. I live in a small city of 150k here and there is a hell of a lot more going on than Perth. But hey thats my opinion.

Besides, we are trying to convince Eastern staters to move over. Their perception and stereotypes do matter/effect us.
I reckon that there's some big cities in close proximity to your small town. But, I'd love to hear some examples of what Perth lacks. I've lived in Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, London and Dublin for at least 16 months in each. There's nothing I can think of that any of these cities has, that Perth doesn't. That's only my opinion, of course.

I'd say the travel factor would play a big part.

VIC clubs only travel about 4-5 times per season. Every second week our guys are at the airport.

VIC game finishes, couple of hours at the ground, home
WA (when playing in VIC), couple of hours at ground, couple of hours at airport, 4 hour flight, home.

Maybe the opposition coaches are using that to stop us landing a KPP.... "You're the other side of 25 now, you really don't want to be cramed in that little seat all the time, do you?"

Bring on the FOTA...Factor of travel allowance!!

Proximity! Perth is the most isolated capital in the world - everything (other than Bali!) is so far away that we live in a bubble.

I love Freo, I'm born and bred and lived for 40 of my 45 years in the general Freo area and it's in my blood. But I've also lived in Singapore for 3 years and Europe for a couple and visited Melbourne / Sydney numerous times for extended periods and while Perth has the weather and the beaches, as far as a 'buzzing lifestyle' goes... Yeah, nah I wouldn't think so. My 20 year old is moving to Melbourne in January - and as much as I'll miss her, man I think it's the best thing she could be doing at her age...

When a young Victorian footballer has Melbourne and all that it offers and 10 teams (yes I'm including Geelong) to choose from if they want to change clubs, then there really is not much that we can offer to outdo that. Especially when there's Hawthorn and Geelong who between them have won six of the past eight GFs and can offer a player a successful club with a solid culture and a realistic shot at winning a premiership... It pushes us further down the list.

Then the COLAs - great beaches, good weather, glam nightlife, and the chance (unless you're Buddy) to play and win premierships, but not necessarily be recognised on the streets - AND it's only a 90 minute flight from Melbourne as opposed to three and a half hours... Well they look pretty enticing also.

And Port is on the up, close to Melbourne, so travel time is negligible, so they become a destination club too...

Tyranny of distance, and Perth not being seen as 'a place to be'... And the perception that once the Big Three finish our window closes - why would you come across the country to play for Freo?

I guess that's why something like 1 to 2 thousand people are moving over here every week and most retired Melbournite's move up to Brisbane, because Melbourne's the place to be. I remember speaking to a young Singaporean student and asked her what she didn't like about Perth and she said there was no shopping. I mean paleeese. The only thing the matter with Perth is isolation all the rest is hobbycock. Sydney on the other hand...

We need to seek out east coast footballers who have close ties to the ocean. The ones who are passionate about kiteboarding,surfing,stand-up paddle boarding, deep sea fishing, spearfishing, scubadiving etc etc.
Perth and west oz is world class when it comes to water sport past times.

Yeah, all good points. But in your day to day life, do you even realise you're isolated? What is it that Perth doesn't have? Aside from the travel. Everyone sees things differently, but I don't think there's anything in the cities mentioned that we don't have.

Aqueducts. We don't have any aqueducts.

From that recent article on Sutty, he was never keen on surfing until he came to WA and Van Berlo (I think) got him into surfing, now it's part of his lifestyle. If only we could do that with all the Victorian boys. Sutty is South Australian though and they're less likely to care as much about moving from SA to WA.

Probably a lived in city, which we are moving towards.Perth is too suburban. I think as Perth gets people to live in the city centre more it will liven up a bit. Removing the separation between Northbridge and the City should help as well. The city has always been a business district not a mixed use area and Northbrige is just a yobbo's playground most of the time. I used to live in the flats at Langley park and worked in the city it was an excellent way to live as a younger person.

Didn't know that about sutty,cheers.
Hopefully fyfe gets him into kiteboarding too so he can take advantage of the ultra consistent summer breeze, the fremantle-doctor.
