We would be a sad sack bunch of Richmond supporters who think their shit doesn’t stink (hint, it does), and we would be unable to enjoy a drought breaking premiership after 30+ years of mediocrity; all the while reminding everyone that we won a premiership that we can not enjoy because we are a bunch of sad sacks.

That is what would happen.
Maybe it would be easier if we could go into a thread on the main board that hasn't just turned into a trollfest about why Richmond sucks, doesn't deserve the premiership, and why Richmond supporters should feel bad

What if Jason Cloke didn't belt Tyson Edwards (or the game was played in Adelaide)?
Why would the game be played in Adelaide? You guys lost your qualifying final and we won ours?

Surely given the hype over him at the time (he was projected to be a superstar), the Eagles would have picked WA native David Swallow at #1.

For sure. I recall at the time there being threats to secede over the "Vicco" conspiracy to enrich the VFL via expansion at the cost to WA footy.

Of course at North we didn't care as scottywiper had assured us David was coming to play with Andrew as soon as he could.

A trade I invented from nothing last season actually came to fruition.

Dan Hannerbery to St.Kilda (and a later pick)
Pick 7 and Anthony Miles to Sydney (essentially Hunter Clark I believe?)
Pick 8 to Richmond (Nick Coffield).

If Hanners stays fit, does St.Kilda stand a better chance of having won a couple more games?
I guarantee the Swans would have taken that in a heartbeat since Miles would have
Picked up the slack of an underperforming JPK while Hanners was out. Plus adding a bloke who looks to have a decent future.
The Tigers haven't played Miles at all and are playing great footy with their mosquito fleet, so Coffield probably would have been blooded by now.

Seemed crazier at the time than it does now.

Hang on... Richmond give Miles and get pick 8? Am I reading that wrong?

Look, it was flawed I admit. When I came up with it the thinking was that St.Kilda have been using high draft picks for a few years and needed a gun in their side. Hannerbery may have filled that somewhat. Sydney were losing an inside mid that helps JPK, and Miles wasn't looking at getting back in the Tigers side but can absolutely be that player. Lastly, Richmond would have lost some insurance but gained a high draft pick.

Probably would have required another pick to go to St.Kilda from Sydney or Richmond as well.

Was completely ridiculous as an actual option, but this is the 'what if' thread and this was my own little outcome haha.

They lose some 'insurance' in a player that isn't close to getting a regular game and gain a top end draft pick? That's flawed alright

Two more “what ifs” vastly earlier than the rumoured Bulldog relocation to Brisbane:
  1. What if Hawthorn had refused to play the 1942 season, as they themselves desired not to?
    • Would Hawthorn have never rejoined the League and be remembered as the worst sporting failure of all time in any league (their 1925 to 1941 record was 66—237—2)??
    • If Hawthorn did not rejoin, how would the VFL have coped with eleven teams after Geelong rejoined??
    • Where would the VFL have looked to eliminate the bye or would they have accepted it as the AFL does now??
    • How would Hawthorn have coped with rejoining after the war ended??
  2. What if the Junction Oval and Lake Oval had been commandeered in 1941 (as Corio Oval was)??
    • Where would St. Kilda and South Melbourne have played in 1941 (even in 1942 the Saints and Swans wanted to play the season despite losing their grounds)??
    • Would they have stayed there permanently as Geelong did after the war??

Unpicking this would be quite the exercise.
No mini drafts. The talent pool spread across the 16 teams (think about the likes of Lynch, Shiel, Cameron, Greene, Kelly, etc).
Ablett stays at Geelong. Ward at the bulldogs. Scully at Melbourne.
You also need to consider l if guys like Adam Kennedy who we snapped up after he was passed over in his draft year in 2010, would ever have played AFL. Others from the academy.l as well.
I'm pretty sure if Scully took our offer someone else would have made an attractive one he'd have taken. Same for Ward who the Bulldogs didn 't seem to rate anywhere near as highly as we did.

What if the Swans kept hold of Carey and Longmire back in the day?

fairly sure the Dogs rated Ward quite highly. Pretty sure he was in line for the captaincy.
Not sure on Scully. He was a Sheedy brain spark to not target an established gun, but to invest in a youngster with potential to get the new supporters excited
If Trengove had gone #1, that's who would have been targeted.

I'd love to know where the likes of Lynch, Shiel, Cameron and Kelly would be.

Or what the Adelaide list would look like had they not lost Davis and Bock when they did.

To me the Dogs dont have a lot of quality posters, but a couple that are have suggested they didn't rate Ward.
I think Davis Scully and Ward were part of a coherent plan to have leaders who weren't generations away from the core group develop with them.

Davis and Ward for sure.
I don't think Scully was ever considered leadership material, but he was a smart move. Only a couple of years into the system, #1 pick that had looked the goods
Not a bad way to build some hype around the club.

Yeah, the Dogs were unlucky to lose Ward when they did - GWS came knocking at exactly the right time.

Still, the Dogs got Macrae with the compo so I'm sure they aren't too cut up.

You know Miles played 5 games last season, right? Richmond don't even need to be involved in this trade lmao, picks 7 and 8 for Hanneberry would be a much better deal for Sydney.

Another What If.
They don't lose Ward, and have one pick for Stringer or Macrae.
Wonder which way they would have gone.

When clubs have back to back picks there seems to be largely a culture in the AFL of taking the one they'd prefer first.

He is an influence. It was Scully who came out pre-season publicly this year and challenged the playing group to improve the two way running. I don't think those things were random.

Shiel and Cameron were both underage recruits who never went to the draft. Both were well on their way to an AFL career and undoubtedly would have been drafted. Very speculative to say where in the draft they would have been picked though.

I've recently learnt Davis and Dangerfield were and are very close friends. Possible Phil's experience influenced Dangerfield's decision to go?
