It would be interesting to compare this to another teams drafting in the same period... if you have the time to burn!!!

I think it will make the above even more bleak.

Wow 56% of our total draft picks played less than 20 games ….. that's frightening.

It is not uncommon for players to not make the grade, its just that the better clubs seem to make less of those mistakes.

It is why we have to keep nailing the first & second round picks as that is where the cream of players normally are found.

A wipe-out there means that the other clubs move further away from us whilst we keep treading water.

Surely this would highlight to the club a systemic failure on both:

a) The identification of talent.

b) The development of players.

In my head, I had a fair idea how poor the drafting was from 2004 onwards but to see it as plainly as Wook put in grid form, its bloody diabolical.

I have written plenty in the past decade or more in relation to how poor I believed our recruiting network was back then plus how we have arrogantly refused to embrace & accept the draft & salary cap.

We successfully worked to a blueprint of just bringing in readymade players, there was never a need to actually develop anyone.

How times have changed ………….. thankfully.

Surely not every one of those players were below standard, how many would have played 100+ games if drafted by another team?

my biggest worry development ..... seems to be easier to develop picks in successful environments ,winning structure

I think if the more successful clubs thought they could develop those that failed at Carlton, there would still be plenty of them running around in the AFL. The fact so many are running around in local comps at a time when they should be in the peak years of their career suggests our talent spotting was very ordinary.

Although our player development was barely funded up until a few years ago, we did see players like Betts, Garlett, Jamison, Ed Curnow, Jacobs etc all become very good AFL players. The debate will always be, did they develop in spite of our club or because of it? To an extent, it is an indictment on the recruiters at all AFL clubs that these players found there way through to either the PSD or rookie draft.
