All businesses have overheads. Sounds like a shitty business model then if you ask me. Not sure the govt should be subsidising a chef to make peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

This isn't the unpopular opinions thread but early childhood education is about due for a reality check. Parents put kids in childcare so they can go to work. I think some people on both sides of the fence have lost sight of that.
Peanut butter sandwiches 😂 bless your heart. I’m tapping out cos I can’t compete with your expertise on centres you’ve had zero experience with.

And you didn't even play an 'as a mother...' card. Shame.

Funnily enough like all adults I was once a kid, and I have plenty of kids in my life. If you want to send your kid to day care with more staff than a medium sized supermarket that's your prerogative, just don't expect anyone else to pay for it.

I don’t want people to pay for it. Where did I say that I do? I think it’s funny that you make comment on things like their menus and standards of care. It’s not just babysitting and sambos.

My daycare charges $110 per day ....

It does go some way to explaining the preponderance of Mumsy social media "businesses".

If your own daily after tax take home isn't a good bit north of that, a difficult discussion time at home.

Said it before and I'll say it again: Don't know how parents do it. Glad it's not me.

So you'd be happy to pay the full amount for the service, with no govt subsidy?

I'm not saying that all kids eat is peanut butter sandwiches, but I am saying a 'daycare centre chef' is taking the piss.

If you think any childcare center is offering peanut butter sandwiches your ignorance on the topic is even bigger than I thought

It would make financial sense for me to pay for it so I could return to work. That’s not the case for everyone.
Why is it taking the piss? She’s a qualified chef batch cooking meals (risottos, pastas, curries etc if you must know) for about 125 people, 3 times a day.

Yes I know a lot of mums stay home because they’d only be working to pay for care.

I remember the chef at my day care back in the day, she was really good at pouring tin spaghetti into a bowl, and peeling mandarins.
I was a latchkey child
I had Humphrey B Bear on TV as my carer
I would go to the neighbour next door who would cook me an egg and put it on some bread when I got hungry
Quickly learnt to boil an egg at 4

It was a different time then

From an uneducated opinion the child care thing is an interesting one.

1) Baby is born = Someone has to look after it (either parent/family etc) until it is old enough to be somewhat self sufficient say 5 years. (School etc).
Now in some cases that is not possible. Both parents have to work. Why? The insanity of property prices and rent = Problem 1. Property.

2) Now a parent could take 5 years off but it roots their career. =Problem 2 Workplace Culture and unrealistic demands. Not really much government can do about that but parents need the money leads back to 1 and COL.

Whole country not just childcare needs a reshake. And childcare could potentially be an even more valuable service in of itself. Good to get Junior out of the house, socialising etc. But as posted above the Eddie Groves just cream millions off the top. Do we need to start school earlier or offer a specialised service? Should it be subsidised? Interesting.

This Corona thing might actually shake a few things loose.

I see absolutely zero reason why childcare cannot be integrated into primary schools, along with before- and after-school care.
At some of the private schools, it is.
The children go from Kindie straight into Prep the following year, with the same school and friends.

I think the younger kids need their own spaces but I also think we have the whole education and welfare system backwards.

It's all geared around making companies rich not improving the overall standard of life in this country.

It's pure $$$ that everything is measured on which is wrong.

Might be a bit rough on the babies.

Why? Dedicated rooms/portables with sound deadening. I thinking about shared resources and economies and better, more open interaction with staff. Make it a pleasant place for kids to be and for adults to work and be recompensed fairly.

Hmm sounds like a socialist utopia.

Well if you aren't just throwing them into class with the preps and out into the same yard it's not do bad
Didn't sound like that in your original post.
